The small pot, combined with dedicated pruning and care.

common misconception is that bonsai are a special species or cultivation of tree. Not true, all bonsai are made form normal species of tree, kept small.
Another misconception is that they're starved to keep them small. Absolutely false, a well kept bonsai is actually far better fed and often healthier than the huge trees you see in the wild. It's kept small by technique, not by starving.

One of the more difficult techniques in bonsai is ramification; that is, to finely subdivide the branches into smaller and smaller twigs. This also has the secondary effect of spreading the tree's "energy" (the flow of nutrition from the roots to the leaves) out over a greater number of branches, thereby reducing the size of the leaves

Shown here in spectacular fashion

>> No.4057435

>> No.4057457

>>4057394
Why is that?
A properly kept bonsai is fertilized REGULARLY (somewhere in the neighborhood of once every 2 weeks in the growing season, depending on what type of soil one is using) and watered every day (again, depending on soil type)

Care is even given to the roots. If you've ever done any gardening you know that a plant can become "root bound" in a pot, the roots grow too wild and the plant ends up "strangling" itself by cutting off it's own water supply. in Bonsai, the tree is taken out every two or three years (or yearly, depends on species) the roots are carefully trimmed to a healthy size and it is repotted.

Seriously, bonsai are kept as healthy as physically possible. In fact, if you took a young bonsai (obviously wouldnt work on a particularly old one) and put it in the ground, it would theoretically just grow into a normal sized tree.

>>4057516
It's really all in the fertilization. Even a relatively small root mass can support a massive amount of foliage. After all, most of the work is being done in the foliage itself, producing the glucose that keeps the roots alive. The roots just keep said foliage hydrated and alive by sending up water and some nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, etc.

When you see those diagrams of trees with those just massive far reaching roots, most of those roots are anchors rather than feeder roots and don't actually do terribly much to feed the tree.

There's no shortage of science going into the art of Bonsai. A healthy tree is the best tree, and keeping the tree healthy and happy is the first objective of bonsai. The arts of styling, ramification, etc all come secondary.

Most trees are dioecious, meaning that they have both parts

For the ones that are one sex, you first figure out if the species you're looking at is monoecious, and then determine it based on what "parts" it has. This again depends on species. Pollen producing structures on males, and flowers or seed pods or something else on females. It's tricky.

Probably one of my favorite styles is the forest-style slab planting.
A forest of the same species of tree is planted harmoniously in a bed of soil that is mounded up on a heavy, flat piece of natural slate. Only problem with these are they are motherfucking heavy when you need to move them. Some larger examples I've seen required a forklift

This isn't a great example of one in my opinion, but picture related.

All trees could wear their leaves or flowers as a hair accessory, for one. And here's some random ideas.

Aspen: A series of identical girls (many trees of genus Populus grow by cloning themselves from underground, so an entire groove may in fact have a single root network.) Blonde with a tint of red hair, wears a gymnast's suit (aspen leaves are particularly flexible, earning many species names like quaking or trembling aspen. )
Cypress: Ties her hair with the familiar cypress cones. Particularly tall and flat (Cypress trees' claim to fame around the Mediterranean area is their length. ) Wears a dress with the branching pattern of cypress needles.
Black walnut: Complete yandere. Black walnut secretes a chemical (juglone) that kills any and all trees nearby, so a black walnut-tan would try to kill off all competition to get your attention.
Pine: Even taller than cypress. Stereotypical Russian girl seen in various series, possible tsundere ice queen.
Palm: Brown girl. Obviously wears a swimsuit, complete with a hat decorated with palm leaves.
Fig: Caring elder sister type. Slightly chubby, with large breasts that may or may not lactate fig jam.

Well, some respond to bonsai techniques better than others. Some species don't "reduce" in their leaves so well.

As for redwood, I see no reason why not. Probably the best style would be a "formal upright" with plenty of taper.

Redwood might be a little unwieldy though, I'd look it up and pay special attention to it in the growing season.

Also remember that it may not do well in your climate. Trying to grow a deciduous species somewhere where there is no cool winter to make it go dormant is asking for an unhealthy tree. The first step is to know everything there is to know about the tree species you are growing. Science and health first, art and technique later.

Doesn't look like a shop to me.
Marijuana plants do lignify, that's how hemp is made into rope, etc.

Are you sure it wasn't a crab apple? Because I've seen many trained apple bonsai, and they had gigantic (well, normal sized but huge relative to the tree) apples every time.

>>4062729
1.They won't survive anywhere BUT outside. The inside of a house is too warm, and too dry. You can take them inside to display for a day or two, but it should live outside as a matter of course.

2. Depends on the species, something like a juniper will be quite easy to take care of. but a Japanese Black Pine requires a bit of experience to take care of. In general though, they're fairly easy to take care of, just be sure to read up extensively on bonsai. Learn what soil types work (bonsai ironically use much BIGGER soil particles than your typical potted plant) how often to fertilize, etc. Generally though you'll just be watering. Education is important.

What would be the best and cheapest tree to start with?

One of the most time consuming things you'll do with your plant is to study it to learn how it should be styled. Other than that, daily care is just watering daily, periodic fertilization, etc.
Unfortunately, it will take years to get results out of something that doesn't already have a lot of potential. They are trees, and they generally grow fairly slow. Happily, you can find something from a garden center that already has some potential, make a few strategic cuts, do a little trimming and wiring, and have something quite nice fairly quickly.

Naturally. Its the same with cactii. I have a San Pedro that im going to consume when im about to kick the bucket, and its a tiny, sad little fucker as of now, after 4 years.

Im not sure on the specifics, but since it is a minimized version of the tree, you should "see results" faster, as its not going to grow to be 40 meters tall. IE. just the sprout will look like something to begin with.

'fraid I don't know much about your climate, sorry. But you could hardly go wrong with a Juniper, I imagine. Most juniper are like cockroaches, very hard to kill them.

Other than that, just look around you and see what kinds of trees grow well in your area. Look up your USDA climate zone
http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html
and figure out what tree species are best suited for that place.
As always, check out to see if you have a local bonsai club, you probably do.

I still have some (barely) live rosemary from a 'miniature herb garden project' last summer.
Would I be able to make a little bonsai out of it as an experiment?
Pic related, it's all that's left of it after a few weeks of snow.

Rosemary can be bonsai'd, but since it's such a small plant and doesn't grow a very thick trunk, it's best suited to particularly small bonsai.

My Bonsai tree looks dead - leaves fallen off, looks all dead kinda dead. Maybe cuz i forgot to water it, is there anyway I can revive it? or is it just dead, tried watering everyday for about a week - doesn't seem to do much.

Sounds like a perfect starter to me. And if I'll like it, I'll buy a few when spring starts.
Should I just carefully take out the two little plants and repot them to a smaller pot and take off the biggest leaves so that all nutrition will go to the trunk?

I enjoyed this thread /jp/, just wanted you to know.

Trunks respond by growing in girth size when there is a greater "traffic" need between the roots and the leaves.
The more foliage there is on a tree, the more water needs to travel up through the xylem, and the more nutrients need to flow down to the roots from the leaves via the phloem.
A bonsai in training will sometimes have "sacrificial branches" meant for this very purpose but to be cut off at a later date (for style purposes)

Personally, I think rosemary is a... funky way to start bonsai. I don't personally like the plant, but don't let me discourage you, just be sure to do your research and your homework before messing with one.

Again: Juniper is one of the most common beginner bonsai, they can acclimate to a variety of climates, and are tough as nails.

...Depends if it's deciduous or evergreen?

If it's a deciduous species, then congratulations! Welcome to winter!

If it's an evergreen tree, if it has lost all it's leaves, I'm 95% sure it's toast.

In addition to learning bonsai, I am also practicing (casually though, I must admit) drawing. I may be able to provide some in the future if other drawfags don't.

I'll be sure to make some requests next drawfag thread.
