His economic plans didn't really pan out to fix most of the problems they targeted, he wanted to erode certain civil rights in the name of security, he supported re-militarizing, and his record on a lot of social issues was poor - so much, in fact, that he directly hurt relations with Korea, Vietnam, and a good chunk of SEA. His worst scandal domestically was his government loding tens of millions of pension records which affected a lot of poorer people especially till it was resolved.

At the same time he's been vital to containing Chinese influence in the region, built strong ties with India, supported government spending over austerity measures at some vital points. Even if Abenomics was not a total success he at least aimed to do things like empower women in the workforce to modernize the economy further and cracked down on nepotism in politics and corporations via anti corruption changes.

His faction of the party is currently not in charge but he still had significant public presence and campaigned actively for political causes. Ultimately killing him will probably not stop anything and will just give his faction a martyr.

So-so. Otaku culture still existed under him but the country started pandering to the West which caused a nosedive in quality of otaku works. His biggest mistake was the olympics. At first I thought the guy must be the standard conspiracy nut and the religious group in question was the Jews or maybe the Christians, but the second bit makes me think it's Soka Gakkai. For those that don't know, it's a major new religious group/cult in Japan, and their associated political party (Komeito) are coalition partners with Abe's party in the Japanese parliament. Considering that it seems unlikely this guy would ever have a realistic chance of killing the Pope or the Chief Rabbi of Israel in the middle of Nara, Soka Gakkai seems like the most likely religion he'd think he might be able to kill a leader of at a Japanese political rally. Therefore, it looks like the motivation for the assassination was likely that this guy was pissed off at Soka Gakkai for some reason, and he took it out on Abe for his party being allies with them.

Even Japanese people on twitter say the SP is to blame. But actually there were not even 2 seconds to react. One tried to protect him with the bulletproof briefcase, others stopped the attacker. Someone should have immediately thrown himself at Abe to get him out of the line of fire. The bottom line is that someone is always to blame if not enough safety precautions were taken.
