But he never turned into an evil caricature of my friend, whom I was trying to kill. The years of friendship didn't evaporate or become twisted into a mockery. They were real and remained so. Except now a few permanent inches out of reach, achingly visible reminders everywhere.

There was a point where we met by accident. It was populated, upscale. We talked amicably, it was like old times. You look someone in the eyes and you can tell. We'd saved each other's lives before this. I helped him out when his old lady got sick, with no one else to lean on. Ages of going out of our way to help each other out. Years of stuff like this, just sitting in the air. Like you can almost touch it. But still, nonetheless, we were going back to trying to kill each other. Not there, but once circumstance allowed for it. That fact was in our eyes too. A strange frozen mote you can feel, staring out from behind your eyes. Then you see the same look in his, both of you plotting.

I thought it was a real shame at the time, even ignoring the real worry of people set after me. Some of his dudes nearly got me thrice. I was VERY lucky, honestly. Weak as this sounds, I don't know if being on the short end was what gave me the luck/fortitude to pull through. I wonder about it at night.

Unlike him, I didn't call in favors or drag others into it. Always used to chide him about that, during better times. I'd be a miser eating ramen and Kroger vegetables while he'd burn his stuff and favors away like a sailor. He was always surprisingly connected too, to be such an anti-social type. He could bleed a favor into a full hand, if you gave him an inch. He was always so goddamn cool on that front. Never less than three steps ahead when someone was out of pocket. He was a real cut above the crowd where that was concerned, myself included. Almost a joy to watch, really.

Otoh, my connections and leverage were more technical than murderous. Maybe if I didn't drop out of my normal schedule and locations... He was almost as paranoid as I, but I wonder why he never switched up his base of operations. Very sloppy of him, unnaturally so.

I stayed on the move, but damned it that doesn't eat away at your nerves and sanity. Making sure you've a solid exit and grab bag wherever you're sleeping is a miserable habit. That and the associated miscellanea of such a lifestyle galls at you, indirectly -- if you must live so, then you can't afford to go against the inclination. You rehearse movements for when doors open. You focus on blind spots, the direction of specific sounds, clothing of groups of people...

We both went insane, in our own ways. He was more profligate than ever, cringingly flashy and reckless in public. Yet the final time I tried to kill him put it all in perspective.

Living as I was, I took the chances, personally, when they appeared. My attempt with the knife wasn't decisive, and for the record he can run faster than I. It was impulsive of me, a random meeting in a shady acre of town spurred my attempt. Afterwards, I stalked his turf and planned. The last time I saw him, he was laying on the floor with his stupid plaid blanket, from way back when. Packs of his goddamn cheap imitation brand cola. Like old times. Still a scrabbling peasant at home, no matter how much the operation raked in. Same as back in the day. It's a painful needle in my flesh, he WASN'T a different person. I made it quick for him. Didn't look painful. It was either him or me, and neither of us could stop anymore. I got away with it, btw. To be fair, he would have gotten away with it too, and had an easier time covering his tracks than I.
