Kigs with OCs, how do you treat the character you've created? Do you see it like a fursona? Because I'd like to kig and since I don't watch a ton of anime and the ones I have seen have few interesting options, I've been thinking of making an OC. Only problem is, I'm afraid that compared to an established character, there will be less to do, and many people have complained in recent threads that kigging without novelty becomes boring very fast. I wouldn't be willing to invest in kig if I'm not going to enjoy it over a long period. Am I rightfully worried?

I love my OCs. I wouldn't call them my "kig-sona" or anything like that, but I very much enjoy their look and the feeling of wearing them. It's certainly not something you do without anything else, so plan to take pictures/videos/do something else in kigu. I kig quite often and the more I do it, the more I want to do it more often. The only thing having an OC really locks you out of his doing themed shoots or get togethers of characters from the same source, but those happen very rarely and usually at a bigger event anyway.

As for how I treat my OC, personally I just picked a generic I liked, picked hair and stuff purely out of personal preference, buying clothes I thought were cute purely out of self indulgence and then after all the pieces were together started coming up with a "personality" for the character that would fit the mask and outfits. Once I got that character down it was then fun to find other types of outfits that'd still fit her.

From what I've heard resin coated PLA is the best, followed by PU which is rather shit and non-coated PLA being about the same or slightly better/worse than PU. If you're careful with it there's no reason a 3D printed mask shouldn't last as long as any other, assuming you don't go for a shit maker (i.e. Mania)

Masks of pretty much any material will warp over time, even FRP ones. Usually it's not actually that much of an issue, it becomes one with shitty prints since the warping can cause cracks or more generally prevents backplates of full masks from closing since things become unaligned.

That tier list is going off of memory from months ago though so take with salt. The rest of it is for sure though.

Posting pics of my kigs, get hundreds of likes and feel internally satisfying - even though I haven't been physically wearing a kig for months because of the boredom and time/effort taken to wear a kig. I sometimes do studio pics (and at my home studio) but that gets very technical and tiring - with litle fun (compared to the little kid watching a kig show on stage) .

Have a large house and dedicated seamless white/black photo-shooting space? Great, then all your photos will end up like the blank space in Matrix. Got a small apartment? Then all your pics will look like (duh) your room. It gets boring in a few months because each pic look almost the same. But hey, as long as the you have a good-quality mask and you aren't fat as fuck, likes and retweets will keep pouring in to satisfy your ego.

Want to do outdoor shoots? Better find someone that has the technique, has the time and is willing to get into all the troubles of preparing for a photo trip. Most people just want to see pics for free.

If you can't meet up with people, I guess you can hire professional models and photographers - but I guess you miss 90% of all the fun. I'd argue, to fully enjoy this hobby, you need 2~3 close friends. By this I mean a person who

- is into kigs, I mean, not just as an audience but who actually want to produce something
- shares hobbies/topics of interest with you, outside kigs - very important
- [if you'd like pics taken] has a proper portfolio (in arts, photography, or even a nice reel if they're into vids)

I've met people in the past. Most just wanna see my kig in a meetup. Meets are not very fun and you don't want to invite them to your house again. Kig tends to attract people with very narrow interests ("nerds") -- and nerds usually don't have very good social skills. I suspect you'll have to keep meeting people until you find someone that you'd enjoy their company - if you're up to it.

If you're going to be loner altogether, then maybe try it out by getting one mass-produced model from a proper manufacturer like ENA from Sigma. Buy 1~2 sets of proper costumes from Japan. See how it works out for you. I can't say for everyone, but for me, in order to do this I'd need to have a big room with a huge mirror, and have a BMI under 19 in order to look like a proper kig in front of the mirror. Maybe you'd enjoy kigging in your room. I don't know.

The last thing you want to do is spend 10 year and dump tens f thousands of $$ into this hobby then find out you don't really like the people in this community - like I did.

You’re ignoring the wig issues there and the fact cracking, chipping and parts breaking off have been relatively common overall. There’s even a mold problem with the open mouth masks. The broken ear guy in question just posted about it a few times recently so it’s the example often used.

Just an fyi to anyone relatively inexperienced, chances are you’ve heard about how FRP is used in planes and safety helmets amongst other things and probably assume it’s pretty invincible. Do not use this as justification to be careless with your mask. They are not shaped in a way that lends strength to the structure, even small drops or bumps can cause permanent damage. On top of that moisture can bubble paint, products used for cleaning like alcohol can damage the finish and high temperatures can still cause some degree of warping, even if very minor.

An FRP from most of the makers that still do them are very expensive, be sensible with it regardless of what people like to parrot online.

Proper maintenance and combing after every use should do the job. And I have never heard of or saw any ears breaking from sigma masks. Perhaps you're holding the mask by the ear?

Also FRP do degrade by time (safety helmet at my workplace has a label that says it has a lifespan of 5 years). Mind you, FRP isn't diamond.

For moisture, I always put my mask in an air-tight container with excessive moisture-absorbing packs and extra foam padding. I've never had any moisture issue ever.

Generic masks like ENA and TIO are reasonably-priced, good-looking and quite durable (not like cheap chinese masks).

Take proper care of your mask, dry and store them properly and it will last for quite a long time.

It's more that FRP isn't as durable as you'd think. I made the mistake of letting a cat knock over my mask on it's stand onto my bed and that was enough to crack the ear off, see the image posted.

Ultimately if you like Sigma's works and think it's worth the price despite the wig issues then fair enough but please do keep in mind that it's not as durable as people would have you believe, take care of it.

some more stuff from my experience

~ vision is pretty poor from default vision and from what I've heard the smoke option for vision is better but has a habit of fogging up

~any of the masks that have the mesh covering the mouth hole have a habit of getting mouldy if you aren't diligent with cleaning the inside, personally use alchohol on a microfiber cloth to gently wipe down the insides

~the mask can be pretty hard to fit glasses under. it's possible and I manage it, but it does cause them to not sit straight and that does make visibility a bit harder personally. smaller glasses or contacts might not have this problem.

~personally find that the best padding placement to improve vision also ends up with my nose pressing against the mask, it's not too bad at first but can get painful over time.

~bit more on the wig front but it's very hard to actually fix the glued "styled" parts of the wigs. They're properly stuck, not just with styling gel/glue but proper "it's stuck for good" stuff. It might be possible to wash out but I'd be worried that'd cause more damage than it'd potentially fix.

Kigurumi masks, even the best ones, are made to an very low standard in terms of structural integrity. They're more fragile than they "should" be because they're such a niche product that there's little incentive to invest the materials and man-hours into making a sturdier model when it'd have a negligible impact on your sales, considering that sturdiness is a far less important factor than aesthetics. It'd be relatively easy to make a sturdier kig mask, it's just not economical.
