That's great, but not quite what I had in mind. What I'd like to see is a first person view, with two tiny cameras peering out of the eye-fold slits, so as to provide stereoscopic vision and depth perception. There's a tiny Raspberry Pi Zero camera (https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/raspberry-pi-zero-camera-module?variant=1473069416458)) with a 120-degrees FoV that would work well for this. Two of these, along with two Pi Zero 2 W, should be small enough to fit in a mask without taking up much space, as they're just bare PCB's that can lay flat.
The guy seems to be using a phone instead of a VR headset, which is probably more practical. The phone could act as a Wi-Fi hotspot for the two Pi's to connect to, and the video from the two camera could be streamed to the phone thanks to a custom app. The app could also support switching to an external camera, if need be.
One problem is finding lenses that would allow focusing this close to the eyes. There are some generic lenses used to make a VR headset with a phone, but they all have a focal length of 45mm, which puts the phone too far away to fit in a mask. Lenses with a shorter focal length of 10-20mm would be much better, but they would probably be very thick. Maybe a Fresnel lens would work for this?
Ideally, the whole setup should be portable too, so that it could be used outside. A 20000 mAh power bank should be able to power the phone and the two Pi's for a few hours.

The basic concept is nice, but your technical method is just about the worst possible way to do it.

I have done something similar before, very lazily, with a $10 camera, USB cable, and standard software on Linux: pic related. It even has analog output, its own battery and video recording capabilities, and because of the flex cable, could be made to only take up about half an inch of space in the forward direction at the expense of being twice as wide.

You're right. Two USB cameras could be hooked up directly to the phone with USB OTG and a USB hub, so no need for the two RPi Zero 2 W and sending the two video streams over Wi-Fi. A custom app would still be needed to display the two videos side-by-side. The software bloat sucks, but a Pinephone with a minimized Linux install could always be used instead.

However, finding a USB camera that's just as small, and with just as wide of a FoV isn't so easy. The one you've shown in your picture has too tall of a lens, as do most camera boards. The RPi Zero camera is so thin, it'd barely take up any space, so it wouldn't bump up against the phone. A laptop webcam board might fit the bill (as they're usually USB), but the PCB is long and narrow, so it might not do so well with the curvature of the mask.

The most expensive part is the phone, but nearly everybody already has one. Since there's no need to install it permanently, someone can just use their main one. If they'd rather have access to their phone than use it for the headset, they may either use an old one they've upgraded from, or buy a used one for ~$100.

As for the rest of the parts, the cameras are 2x$10 and so are the Fresnel lenses. That leaves a 3d printed mount, a strap and some cables, so let's add $20. That means the project could be built for $60-$160. With shipping and taxes, make that $100-$200. That's right about the same price as a hadatai. It's not like kigging is cheap to begin with.

The main design concern is thinness, because there isn't much space space inside the mask. Off-the-shelves FPV or VR headsets aren't designed to fit in a small space, so they tend to be protrude a lot. Even if you managed to find a cheapo headset and some stereoscopic cameras for less than the price I mentioned, it would probably be too thick and require wearing the mask much farther away from the face. That wouldn't look right at all.

At the same time simply due to reputation (western) kigs generally don't want anything to do with (western) furries and vice versa.

Practically speaking Kig is much cheaper and easier although we do lack any makers that people can generally agree is good.
Furries also generally tend to be seen in a more positive light at cons or outside and they've got a huge fanbase to socialise within on top of that.
