I’m not sure if any of u will be interested in my story but wrote it down anyway. Sorry in advance if there’s any mistake, I’m not a native English speaker.

Let’s call her a-san for anonymity. In the beginning, I’m just a fan of her. I like her work so much to the point where I self taught Japanese just to understand her works.

A-san was a famous animation artist and illustrator. Her animation videos got millions views on YouTube. She also like to draw comics and post on pixiv. She is SUCH a talented creator.

But a few years ago, things took a sudden turn for the worse. She deleted ALL of her accounts (YouTube, niconico, Twitter, pixiv…all!) and ALL the works she has spent a lot of effort on. No one knows what happened. Many people was worried about her since she’s not in a very good mental state, telling from her works. She just disappeared, without a word.

After several months, It turns out that she changed her identity and started to post her art as another person. However, clearly the atmosphere of her works under her new name is getting darker and darker. Full of suicidal thoughts and Self loathing. She even said directly through one of her works that she “死にたい(wants to die)”. Her works’ comment sections are all closed by her on purpose. No Twitter account or any other social media available, of course. There’s no way to get contact with her. The only thing I can do is just, witnessing her posting one suicidal work after another. It’s really devastating.

Last year, she noticed that her works were reprinted without permission to a foreign website, and as you can imagine, she definitely wants those reprints deleted. But thats a foreign website and she can’t speak any foreign language. She listed her email for help(deleted shortly after tho). I happen to be from that country, so I contacted her, telling her that I can help. This is how we met. (All the reprints were successful deleted btw)

Later, gradually we became familiar with each other. I got to know that she’s one year older than me. I never ask her about her past, things like why did you delete your accounts and so on. I just constantly show her my appreciation and encouragement. We also talked a lot about her works, especially the comics.

She started to open up to me. She told me that she has a serious personality disorder which leads to extreme social anxiety and painfulness. She is absolutely horrified of talking to people, even her psychologist. That having any social account will make her scared so she deleted them all. That she dropped out of college because of her mental illness. That she was bullied by her teacher and classmates during middle school And so on.

One day suddenly she asked me “私のことをどう思っていますか”….You already know what happened next, right?

I've reached that point where there's nothing I can do to improve my reading skills other than grind the fuck out of reading. I'm a faster and better reader than I used to be years ago, but it still feels like shit when it takes 3-4 times the amount of time to finish a VN as a native, and it's much harder to notice any new improvements compared to my beginner months when I could feel myself reading faster and faster even when finishing a single VN route. On the upside, I can read virtually anything I want now, but now that I have work to deal with I have way less free time than I did when I started learning Japanese in college so I can't just spend half a day on a VN anymore. I'll never regret learning this language though, my life might feel like it sucks right now but at least I have something to feel proud of, at least I can cling to the comfort that I can read Japanese at the speed of a baby rather than not at all.

I'm looking for a specific book, it was about the kanji and very similar to Remembering the Kanji in the application of mnemonics, but unlike that it did explain the meanings and reading of them. Got it from DJT years ago. I think it was more lighthearted and humorous in style too
