Okay, let's have a thread for the exclusive purpose of tweaking Mangagamer's release. Please don't scatter efforts on several threads.

[X] Hide ugly UI (COMPLETE)
First, a patch to hide the UI, made by Anon. "I just made a patch. Extract these files to your higurashiwhentheycry folder. Be sure to set the right-click function to show menu instead of hide frame."

[X] Replace ugly font (COMPLETE)
From the same Anon (I think), a patch to replace the font with Consolas.ttf. "What the hell, I might as well knock out the font hack while I'm at it."

[X] Music patch (COMPLETED, BUT MORE CAN BE DONE, READ FURTHER)
- http://www.mediafire.com/?dhuunoxtinz (Himatsubushi-hen version, full 4 chapters)
- http://www.mediafire.com/?nmyimymm4vy (Demo version, music from 1st chapter only)
QUESTION:"Why would I use this? the music from MG is better!". ANSWER: Better is subjective , but more importantly, MG release has fewer tracks. They were too lazy or didn't have enough music, so they went and replaced VARIOUS tracks with the SAME track, in multiple occasions, which is just butchering the game. For example Rena and Mion don't have their own music themes in MG release. This adds variety again to the soundtrack.
Made by another Anon (me, to be more precise). There's two patches, one that replaces the music with the Himatsubushi-hen soundtrack (the repack of chapters 1-4) and another that uses the music from the demo (so this version it's only up to chapter 1). If someone has the soundtrack that matches the demo (which I prefer), please post it so we can complete patch two.
This is a test version and is not tested throughly. If you note anything weird, please let me know.

TODO:

[ ] Port the PS2 sprites
Should be easy, but tedious. You have to extract each sprite and rename it to the correct match for Mangagamer's, then run them through alpha.exe from bgitools and place them on your higurashi dir. I won't do it because I like R07 sprites better, so good luck to the next Anon.

OP here. It works, believe me, and it was quite tiring and time consuming to do, but I couldn't play without it.
Remember h4lp.7z is the full soundtrack, demolp.7z is only for chapter 1. You can combine both if you want, applying demolp after h4lp. To clarify, if you plan to play eps 2 to 4, you NEED h4lp, demolp won't cut it, as it only replaces some tracks.
Extract the patches in the higurashi folder.

Sound effects were not replaced, only music and ambient sound (higurashi, etc), but you can do it if you want, if you figure out the correct way to rename the original files to match the lsysXY files in data2000.arc. If you extract 0.txt from the script with AnimeED in the original japanese Higurashi files there may be a list like there was for music. Then you need to convert using bgitools. Be careful, bwcreate doesn't like all oggs, I had to use 3 different converters.

Are you being dense on purpose?
Higurashi had X tracks.
Mangagamer could not use those tracks.
The had Y tracks from KAI (or REI, I'm not sure)
KAI is another arc in the series (episodes 5-8)
Y <<<< X (in number, quality is the same, both are doujin tracks)
So they went and used like 15-20 tracks from a latter arc tracks to replace ALL tracks from the first games (35 aprox.). Resulting in a lot of duplicate tracks, so in the game when the song should change, a lot of times it does not, because both old tracks were replaced by the same new one.
And of course you won't get to listen to the real soundtrack, which is different, and if you've heard the two, the quality is similar, both are doujin music.

The soundtrack for only Onikakushi (the original demo on 07th Expansion's website, translated by the twins, not altered in any way, that means no ps2 music or graphics) is different from the Onikakushi soundtrack for Onikakushi-Himatsubushi. If you liked the music as you heard it in the demo you can apply the demo patch so when you read Onikakushi it has the same music as in the demo. Himatsubushi patch uses all the music from Himatsubushi, which included music in the demo but changed what tracks were used in certain scenes of Onikakushi. So Himatsubushi patch makes mangagamer's bgm the same as the original japanese version of Himatsubushi-hen. The demo patch is an extra for people who liked the track selection used in the demo of Onikakushi rather than what was used in Onikakushi when packaged with Himatsubushi. The PS2 music is completely different music made just for the PS2 release of Higurashi, though some are remakes of dai's music used in Higurashi Kai.

I too would like to see someone find a way to port the minigames over, but you know nobody's gonna do it.

What I'd like to see is a patch that makes you able to open the menu while on the save/load/read tips menu inbetween chapters, since there's no way to exit through here normally, or just add an exit button to those.

More importantly though, I'd also like to see a patch that makes the backlog and menu not have an ugly sky blue background. Pic related.

From my understanding, that's a theoretical --- noone willing to work on this project knows enough about BGI to write the necessary scripts. It would be easier to stuff the translated text back into the old engine.

The only thing currently feasible out of the 3 you mentioned is the 3rd, since you only need to edit the graphics.

I second this, if it's possible. I can live with the occasional awkward sentence, but when I learned MG typo'd 'Hinamizawa' as 'Hizamizawa' at one point, it... angered me.

I can live with 'Hao' instead of Hauu' too... but it makes me wonder if Hanyuu is going to go "Aoaoaoaoao" when Kai is released.

For the record, did MG actually keep all of the verbal ticks/catchphrases? Like 'Nipah" and 'Take you home"? I haven't gotten to read yet.

I am not really sure how things like this works, but if I got things right then it is so that Mangagamer has the license for the work "Higurashi"(the characters as well?) within the english market? And Alchemist has the license for the re-worked ps2 sprites, right?

If I have gotten this right, then does this mean that Mangagamer isn't allowed to use Alchemist's sprites as they lack the license to do so, and at the same time Alchemist aren't allowed to sell their "Higurashi stuff" on the english market as they lack the license to do so, right?

I guess that sounds about right considering how business work and the money that is behind it, though it still feels kind of stupid.

Using the BGI tools, I've extracted the sprites from the MG release just fine, but I can't seem to do the same with the PS2 ISO. Here's what I've done so far :
- Switched to japanese locale
- Mounted the PS2 ISO (Daemon Tools). I've run it with a PS2 emulator, the game works all right.
- Got the NIPA tools from http://azuco.sumomo.ne.jp/archive/ps2higurashi_r070720_.zip
- Got the wnaspi32.dll from http://www.frogaspi.org/download/wnaspi32.dll
- Followed the instructions on http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1182329

I'm stuck at the extraction part : I typed "nipa /d 6:0:0", then it freezes during about 30 seconds and does nothing (see attached picture).

I tried various other things like "nipa /d6:0:0", "nipa /d06:00:00", but it gives me the same result.

Would anyone mind to help ?

Mangagamer just duplicated some of the songs in the music archive. For example, in the original music folder, there was Rena.mp3 and Mion.mp3, and both of these were different songs. Mangagamer just made the same song be both Rena.mp3 and Mion.mp3, as well as several others, duplicating the song each time. They put around 3-4 copies of the same song in the music archive. That's why you hear the same song played over and over and over again in their version. The patch just puts the original songs in their proper place. No messy code fiddling required. Just extract the files in the .rar into the main higurashi folder and go.
