It's pretty hard to imagine any character from a Turtledove novel as an animu character with saucer-sized eyes.

My imagination is not robust enough to make an image clear enough to differentiate between anime and realistic people.

Everything else, though, no. It's hard to equate Steinbeck and Faulkner with anime.

I usually don't deliberately imagine. I just read (or listen, I like audiobooks) and let images spontaneously generate. These are sometimes quite vivid, such that they embed themselves into memory, and at a later time emerge unexpectedly, and for a second I wonder what film or game did I see that in.
