Do many of you have OCs? I have a few ideas for characters I'd like to kig, but I'm not really sure. I could do an OC, but I don't really have an idea. How do you comission stuff like that? Is it like furry fursonas, where they get suits made based on their fursonas?

got a few but they're all from games I've played that let you make your own characters, know quite a few people though that just browse picrew and keep at it with that until they get a design they like.

As for how, you usually have to send references to your chosen character anyway to any given maker assuming you're not getting a generic. For an OC you could take screenshots, send a picrew image, commision an artist to make a reference, etc.

Depends a lot on what kind of OCs you have, what references you have at hand and what mask maker would suit them.

Of course you also have the option of getting a generic and crafting that into an OC, is what I've done with my mask.

Big fan of both but at the moment I probably lean more towards pre-existing.
There's characters I really love everything about and if I ever find a maker that'd do them justice I already have a long list of things to try out with them, both in photoshoots/videos and more generally just practising different mannerisms and ways of physically interpreting the character.

For my OC on the other hand, she's got a name and I've got some ideas of different directions I could take her aesthetically and thematically but it's all super vague and it's something that'll take a lot of experimenting with till I find something I'm happy with and that's unfortunately expensive on the outfit front.

On the other hand, it's a lot easier to be self indulgent with an OC imo. I've always wanted to wear lolita, bunny suits, dresses, etc before and an OC is perfect for that kinda randomness. Even just wearing my own normal clothes but looking cute whilst doing so is a lovely feeling. Imo it's hard to do that with a pre existing character because I'm personally really anal about the idea of maintaining the core of a character's image and characteristics.

I agree that pre-existing characters are preferable to OCs, since you have an already established character to emulate and it's easier to visualize the actual costume rather than creating a new generic character from scratch. I've never performed but I already have some candidates for characters I would go as. I have fantasies about performing as them when I'm alone. I do feel about anxious about the idea of dressing as a character I already am familiar with, it gives me a weird feeling of stepping into their shoes. Even the idea of being near a performer makes me anxious the same way I'd feel anxious about being near a character at Disneyland.

The problem is you have to learn how to perfectly emulate the mannerism of said character, and in some cases that includes your body shape and height. For example, I don't think I could pull off Makoto Kino / Sailor Jupiter since he's supposed to be tall and I'm an embarrassing 5'9" (I know she's 5'6" which would make me taller than her, but compared to other performers I would be shorter than the taller ones). I'm not in the best psychical shape, I got a bad back and a very visible gut. You got any advise?

Honestly don't think you need to worry about your height at least. By most standards you are decently tall and whilst some other kigs are taller, that's not necessarily common nor what you'll end up interacting with either. For all you know you could end up performing with a bunch of really short people or you might be perfectly content performing solo.

Bad back and your gut would be the main issues imo, but the former could potentially be improved just by keeping aware of your posture and the latter could be improved via body shapers and corsets.

On a more fundamanetal level, we've all got to come to terms with the fact that none of us are going to be perfect anime girls, even the ones that seem like they pull off kig perfectly are usually just using certain clothing choices, camera trickery or straight up photo editing to make them seem better than they naturally are, and that's just part of kig in general. The best you'll ever look in kig might very well only be in a photo, and this usually is the case.

Not to throw Bio (I think it's him?) under the bus but these illustrate the above point pretty well imo. Left hides the biggest "flaws" thanks to the camera angle, right does not. Whilst in kig you'll usually only ever see the right in the mirror, it's up to you to decide if that result is good enough for you.
