I made a great discovery a few weeks ago, R-Note aka Yellow Zebra uploaded all their Touhou M-1 Grand Prix manzais on their official YT channel and they come subbed too. It's a shame it's just the sketches and don't include the judging, CMs, or all the other bonus stuff but it's great to see official support.

Translations seems to be done by the ground up as they're a bit different (they don't into depth to explain the japanese cultural jokes and puns) from the old fansubs which have mostly been taken down for one reason or another (RIP Celeste Melancholia)

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1uFa3v2uibwxWnI_hrD9fA/videos

Also any good MMDs come out in like the recent 5 years? Touhousubs suddenly died after last posting on working on subbing Burning Meiling 6 and went dark, I did find this channel https://www.youtube.com/c/MoriyaSalesman/videos but they mostly do stuff from billibilli which isn't bad imho but I don't think there's anyone out there as dedicated as TouhouSubs at translating 2hu fancontent.

>>37385409
I dunno how old you're talking about here but old nico before the complete shift to html5 used mp4, I know this because I've downloaded a few 2hu MVs just by opening the media file separately with Inspect Element and saving them.

If you're looking for more translated content, check out stuff translated by Kotta Kagayaki: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmpQ7eCF0lrJ6JflEfUSv1y05KvdXZfH9

Moriya Salesman's content isn't bad, but there seems to lack a bit of diversity and he seems to be following mostly his tastes whereas TouhouSubs and Kotta Kagayaki managed to put their tastes aside somewhat. Also, Moriya Salesman doesn't seem reliable when it comes to getting reprint permission from authors. But there are some series he recently did that were more than welcome (Gensokyo Ghost Stories, Genso Spectrum, Scarlet Devil Koakuma).

As for good MMDs in the past 5 years, it's all down to one's personal tastes, as some people might not like trends and gimmicks that became prevalent during the latter half of the decade (overuse of some particular settings, styles and characters, copycatting, bandwagoning, tendency to picture-story show rather than attempting to animate, overuse and mostly unnecessary use of yuukuri voice, much less dedication and innovation, negligence during the creation process, etc). MMDs in the vein of was what made during the early to mid-2010s are unfortunately pretty much extinct and long-lasting series aren't really a thing anymore, unless it's lazy picture-story show. The trend has slowly moved to really short test or gag videos on Twitter, or really short (less than 30s) efforts in general. There has been some milestones but they're becoming rarer and rarer, as MMDers aren't as dedicated as they were before. MMDers are also incredibly prone to melting down, vanishing and moving on way too early. Also note that all the gimmicks I've quoted earlier directly originate from yukkuri letsplayers. It's those people who are mostly getting into MMD and driving trends. I could be mistaken, but MMD seems to be incredibly gate-keepy by nature, preventing true talents from getting enough free time in order to get all necessary resources and getting into it. That's why the most popular models and scenes you see on fan content are the ones readily available and password-free. Other resources have complicated passwords, multiple hoops in order to be accessed and sometimes prone to deletion very early on from their original authors. i'm also under the impression that MMD overall gets a pretty bad stigma, despite the milestones and masterpieces that can be and have been done with it. There seems to be way to many unknowns about what's really going on inside the wonderful world of MMD for me to be able to understand everything and every suspect behaviour (sorry for the lengthy text).

This is a playlist I attempted to make myself matching my own tastes gathering many videos I consider worth watching, and getting away from those invasive trends: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKgdFr9KN4QV8bSl2DKUc3mcFnb6C3j_h

About Niconico and older encodes now. It's funny that when I bring the topic on usual places, I get totally ignored just like it's irrelevant. There seems to be some confusion about the issue, as this thread suggests. Let me clarify. Videos uploaded prior to some time in 2016 were direct uploads by users and weren't reencoded unless they were below the 100MB mark. That was the old "smile" format. They remained that way until March 2021 when they got all reencoded to the new format following the shutting down of the old back-end. And this obviously led to some whoopsies like audio and video being reencoded to lower bitrates, some in-between resolutions (like 800x600, 800x452) gone and converted to 480p or 360p, etc. I can see the interest for Dwango, but for preservation purposes, this is disastrous. I also find it regrettable that noone seemed to have reached Niconico about that issue. If anyone here is fluent in Japanese, please try to reach them. Reencoding stuff that was already poorly encoded to begin with isn't what I call a good move for preserving that ancient content. There should be at least an "original quality" option for those uploads that would just remux the original streams into the new system.

MMD is great because it's easy to use, there's tons of free assets and anyone can run it. Have fun convincing the Japanese to buy a high end gaymer PC with a $4000 GPU, learn programming, learn animating in UE and spending tons of money on professional assets.

Niconico is an eternal dumpster fire, they burn millions of dollars every year and every year they have to have to come up with new and innovative reasons why corporate should keep shoveling money into their furnace. Nothing that isn't directly related to profitability or at least future profitability has a snowball's chance of making it into the planning.

It's too late. It's already tainted. I will retreat to smaller more niche places should things get too bad here. It's fine. Other people can enjoy Touhou. I just don't want to see their awful ideas and "art". I suspect anything they create will bastardize the characters, or even their fanon traits and behaviors that have been developed.
The best that can be hoped for is to limit your exposure to this new wave of fans.

So it's okay to absolutely butcher the canon and realize your stupid idea of how a character behaves if you're Japanese?
>I just don't want to see their awful ideas and "art"
Many times I've seen Touhou art, and thought to myself "wow this guy must be a westerner" and it turned out they were Japanese, lol.
I don't really understand this worship of the Japanese, when most of them are just as destructive to the canon as anybody else.

The funniest thing is you don't have to own a $4000 cutting-edge computer to run MMD and produce something decent with it. Even an ancient Core2 Duo/Quad with a GTX 950 can do the job. It's the video card that's essential not the CPU. But the cheapness of the vast majority of productions isn't because of poor hardware but rather negligence, lack of dedication and lack of curiosity from creators. It's hard to believe they all use the same hardware since 2010 when you see things like low-quality pixelated lighting and grey shadows when those can be easily fixed by correct settings into MMD and carefully adjusting GPU settings.

There sure are free assets and tons of decent ones. But many of them password-protected with sometimes hard-to-guess ones and mostly prone to deletion from their author if you have the nerve to come too late.

>>37407144
I totally agree when it's appropriate. Same goes for yukkuri voice. Many yuukuri-voiced efforts gained a cult status and became memorable milestones (those come to mind among others: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0xdoLBi9--qmRY1qs5vF4HtP3s4TCPuI).). But knowing MMDers, choices they make are more driven by laziness and mimicking their neighbourhood than common sense. I even created a playlist to illustrate those trends I tend to dislike (there are also some great works I put there from time to time): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKgdFr9KN4QXCyQhHo1rnrWkPCBLC0E7Y
The problem is they never try to get past their comfort zone. Well, some of them tried at least. And we actually got this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NML02zYjW-Y

Hell, that Ga_koya example I quoted above looks extremely lazy at first glance but is incredibly entertaining.

>>37406259
Curiously, it now takes several years to create a decently-animated 15min-long+ effort. What world we are living in some could be tempted to say. It's just that MMDers now don't have patience or guts or even writing qualities to write decent and lasting stories anymore.
Well, depending on the creator. Fresh ones often have incredibly fast production pace due to initial excitement during the first year. As time goes by, the initial excitation and motivation wanes and production pace suffers inevitably. This is often at this moment that said creator decides to move on to where the grass is greener. Nothing wrong, as this is human reaction. But it gets problematic when it's in a middle of an unique ongoing and praised series (see Scarlet Devil Koakuma).

There are exceptions such as Q-ri (even though it's getting harder for him this year due to his thankless job): https://www.nicovideo.jp/series/63710
Also, it looks like good surprises are more likely to come from China rather than Japan now: https://space.bilibili.com/13786126/video

>> No.37420073

>>37418501
I suspect a lot of the fanbase shitters will move on from it in time, and the decent people stay. It seems that terminally online people tend to jump from fandom to fandom really quickly.

Even squid game had a shipping scene, Annoying secondaries either learn to become sufferable as they learn more or something else captures their attention and they leave.

Fumo mania seems to be dying out a bit (I don't see fumos outside of touhou circles as often) so I feel like its going to go a bit slower for a bit.

I have a collection of almost 150 Touhou fan animations gathered from all around, most of them 2D animations and 3D renditions using Blender. I mean like actual videos as well, not short gifs.
I have some MMD ones but I don't archive those unless I feel like it's worth saving, like Burning Meiling stuff or the Touhou vs LoveLive one. Might share this to /jp/ someday when I feel like it, for now I'm just going to add to it and share a high quality obscure one I found.

Sometimes I'm astounded at how...old many of the commonly used assets are. Nigamon's Alice just turned 10 freaking years old this year although it's held up rather well in looks compared to say, Montecore's models which truly look dated. Many other stuff like stages are from the early 10's, it's fun to imagine Meiling standing guard outside that old ass SDM stage with not a bit of shade from the sun or a place to sit, just standing outside a bare wall and gate all day.

One would think that with MMD being so popular as a newbie friendly and indie 3D movie maker, there'd be a lot of more people making assets for public use, or perhaps it's MMD that's the problem?
Sure makes one wonder if the community will ever upgrade to much more modern and potent engines so they can make something a lot bigger in scale and realistic looking at least for the environment. The lighting too, Ray MMD is great but can only do so much and I don't think it's as popular as it should be,

You guys reckon this is as good as it gets on the technical side and that's how it'll be even into 203X? Ah, to dream of being a 3D artist and crank out some seriously ambitious and modernized assets, giving the whole scene an overhaul, perhaps even on a new engine. Bout time we took advantage of modern graphics and processing capabilities...now excuse me while I go watch Sweet Magic again

>Caught my eye because how many MMD dramas are hour long, dubbed and subbed too?
That was indeed one of the best surprises of 2020, especially coming in handy at the beginning of this pandemic. Probably one of the best moments spent in front of a Touhou MMD combining multiple high-grade production elements for me. However, those in Europe need a proxy or a VPN to watch it.

And as stated earlier in this thread, this is one of my gripe with this overall MMD scene, as this kind of initiative and projects are becoming incredibly rare now, to the point that 赤トンボ and Nekozone are the only active MMDers putting out long and lasting projects nowadays. What a meagre offer we have now. Devotion and implication are not qualities that suit MMDers or Touhou video content creators anymore (there are exceptions indeed, such as MinusT and Ninose Yasunori for instance). Everything is driven by fame, trends and money these days.

>>37667981
>One would think that with MMD being so popular as a newbie friendly and indie 3D movie maker, there'd be a lot of more people making assets for public use, or perhaps it's MMD that's the problem?

The lighting too, Ray MMD is great but can only do so much and I don't think it's as popular as it should be,
To continue further in my little rant, I'd add that curiosity and desire to stand out aren't qualities that define content creators either, especially MMDers. But there might be a reason. MMD seems to be extremely gate-keepy and left-to-your-own-devices by nature. This doesn't encourage curious people to dive into it, as they prefer to move on to other and more rewarding hobbies. That's why most productions look so lazy, because it's always the same type of people having excessive free time on their end producing that content (and even for years and years). So, in an ideal world, there would be tons of ground-breaking productions considering how accessible MMD seems to be (putting the gate-keepy aspect aside, as there are tons of readily available quality resources, albeit being somewhat overused). In reality, that's not the case (anymore) at all. The most exclusive and interesting resources are password-protected and easily subject to vanishing due to some over-zealous modellers (lol Kotami Cafe, lol azur73i4). I doubt there would be another Sweet Magic again. But for anyone interested, there are still decent tutorials, and even written in English too. And that's how I learned.

I find it hard to believe that creators are so reluctant and only capable of producing the same things over and over with productions looking like they came out 10 years ago when it took me not even an afternoon to produce this thing using existing motion and audio, all that with totally outdated hardware (I plan to use this video to test out and showcase my vintage TVs, this way I'm not using an existing video I'm potentially not allowed to reprint):
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1sBggkpKrLBPysQYLihPvcCcRuR9-zc1R?usp=sharing

(mind you, I used an ancient Core2 Quad Q9950-based machine coupled with a GTX 950 to produce the source of this video in 4K 50fps, so you definitely don't need a power horse to produce decent-looking MMD animations)

By the way, to end my rant (I think this is present on one of the playlist that appear earlier in this thread (here >>37400954 to be exact), here's a recent action MMD drama almost in the vein of early Burning Meiling episodes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNdWhUqGqrw

So there's still hope, but very little.

>>37810337
It got a dub because vivian198808 felt like doing it sometime in 2020 (very late compared to when that video was released originally) and because Moriya Salesman prefer giving exposure to fandubs rather the unvoiced originals. Otherwise it could have stayed unvoiced forever (which was fine for me, as it perfectly stood on its own). For some reason, vivian198808 did some other dubs of pretty old videos during 2020, probably because she was bored and couldn't find something current that was good enough to fandub (other than Jando's videos which you can watch both dubbed and with an alternate sound design I did here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_ODUJdyFKU).).

This is true almost always. The terminally ill and attention whores almost always jump hard into anything do their shipping stuff or make up things and police the fanbase but after the next trend pops up they usually leave and you do not hear from them again. Reminder that this has happened in MMD, Otomads, and currently with Touhou. Even some MMD types hopped to Touhou because they ran out of material and it became stale. But I would not put them into this category.

Very nice initiative, and this will prove especially useful for videos that don't exist anymore. Well, unless some third party comes in and requests deletion. There's one problem however but it's mostly due to recent Youtube stupid changes to the layout. When having only one-line-long descriptions, YouTube will truncate URL links but won't make them clickable, which will prove rather inconvenient and painful over time (problem isn't present in Invidious instances, that's what tickled me off). So I recommand writing a little more into descriptions (like original author and video description, original Twitter and Pixiv pages if available, add some line breaks) so that the viewer can actually click on "Show more" in order to make the links clickable and possibly develop the viewers' sense of discovery and curiosity. But as nice it can be for incredibly obscure videos, it can still harm creators who aren't given proper views and exposure on their original uploads. Ah, yeah a last thing before going further, about that Moon Space Battle animation video, it indeed was on YouTube but the creator being so obscure you almost had no chance of finding it. But at the time, I actually found it very easily and even found the guy's Pixiv page along the line (which listed both Niconico and YT links):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvUtl5m7VvM
https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/45072986

So being curious makes you literally find the impossible to find, and sometimes not even wasting that much your time (unlike when you try to find a solution for an annoying fault or problem).

To further develop and to respond to >>37821503, I think having some knowledge about creators behind your favourite creations is essential to maintain that sense of discovery and curiosity that some of you seem to lack. As content doesn't magically pop up at the corner of the street and creators who spent a considerable amount of their free time to make them happen deserve proper credit and recognition. So, as far as I'm concerned, I'll do my best to encourage fans to get more curious and try to find stuff by themselves and give artists credit they deserve in order to better support them. Because Touhou fanartists are so prone to melting down and wipe out all of their past (like my previous rants and some other threads on /jp showed), giving proper support is absolutely crucial, financially or through well-written feedback, encouragement words or likes.

It's always nicer when you refer to that 514 song (arrangement of Hartmann's Youkai Girl) by Maritumix you heard on MinusT's Brambly Boundaries video instead of that sort of early-2000 house/2-step arrangement of Koishi's theme you heard in that epic 3D danmaku animation video you saw once on (insert video platform name) but can't remember who made both.

I've just forgot. Taking the opportunity to reintroduce the 東方紅進旭 ~The Hearts of Scarlet Devil~ MMD series, which only tops at 150 views per episode on average:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcSNRou7AeryeVyhi8Z7pJZib1ti42wgj

This is utterly ridiculous, considering the quality of this series, its pretty quick production pace and the amount of work put into it. You can see the author isn't being favoured by YouTube's algorithm at all. For the curious, it also got a dub by vivian198808 on Bilibili (link to her page a few posts earlier). This should be indicative of its quality.

I'm also taking the opportunity to introduce another but older quality MMD series that Vivian also dubbed in her spare time. It's got a couple of episodes but never got finished because author wanted to "disappear":
https://www.nicovideo.jp/user/31651502/mylist/36915872

It's called パチュえもん, and I recommend watching if you're in desperate lack of quality MMD dramas that do not cater to trends or do not try to force a questionable use of yukkuri voice. They knew to make 'em back in the day for sure. I'll even be tempted to add "they don't make 'em like these anymore".

Also, earlier in my posts about deleted videos, I meant "by a completely little-known hand-drawn author", I was a lacking a word for describing how obscure this creator was, and this alone may explain why they left by slamming the door.

Animelover1984's fork of youtube-dl doesn't cap to my knowledge and automatically downloads the highest quality option.

Same for the Niconico Downloader add-on for Firefox (if I remember correctly). This add-on will download the current tab video at its current selected quality but you'll have to let the tab open and the player mode has to be set to "HTTP" instead of "HLS" (otherwise the add-on won't see the video). The add-on doesn't work for community videos.

Then you still have the good old browser inspector method. Again, the player has to be set to "HTTP" mode, then the download link will appear inside the "network" section of the inspector. Indeed, you'll have to let the tab open during the download (so the heartbeat signal is still sent).

Anyone linked Kubifuri-P (首振りP)/Kei yet?

TouhouSubs translated some of his short videos (that used Kubifuri's previous models), https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3F-kTrfKTRzFdWUPPln4YvDqP-GjJL6a

and I've started to do my own translation on his longest and probably the most famous series named 弱肉強食幻想郷/Jakuniku-kyoshoku Gensokyo (translates as "the law of theJungle Law in Gensokyo" or sth like that).

Here's my fan trailer of the series
https://youtu.be/HT4Fj8YsxpE?list=PL3F-kTrfKTRyLOm8aet8QvuMZpDgYRoVa
YouTube series playlist (has both English and Japanese subs/translation on-going)
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3F-kTrfKTRxTuqAC9Bf_etE4L1_gkg75
(My uploads have terrible encoding or compression (whichever term it is/I'm not too bright with video tech), may have been caused due to I uploaded them as private videos and kept them in that state for some time. Link to original NicoNico uploads are in video descriptions)

Jakuniku-kyoshoku is perhaps my most favorite long-storied touhou fan video/anime series out there. It explores the nature and politics of Gensokyo in light-hearted way. Pretty different from his "Poop Video" series (some of which translated by TouhouSubs) in some aspects but still has the same good writing and direction.

I'm also translating Kubifuri's newer works. I've completed his three episode long "Hourai Death Game" which is a murder mystery based on Hourai Dolls,
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3F-kTrfKTRwdNODGkNvUEGKevcmNAxf5
and I'm currently working on his on-going series, 幻想絶望郷 Genso-despair-kyo (reads Genso zetsubo kyo) in conjunction with Jakuniku-kyoshoku.
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3F-kTrfKTRxJqn1z_Wswh3Iq6N_dUwqk
(I sent him the subs for ep2 earlier, so I think it should be up in a day or two)

These series are already on Kubifuri's youtube channel, so I send subtitle files to him and he applies them to the videos (he was kind enough to do so, I'm much thankful to him).

Once I'm done with Jakuniku, I'm planning to translate Genso Meteor (which is another one of my top favorites among all touhou fan videos), but I'm slow on translation, so dunno when that'll happen. Right now, I'm already busy enough translating Kubifuri's videos, so I don't think I will be working on other people's videos yet (maybe, maybe in the future)

Frankly my English is sub-par (I'm Japanese), but I hope those translations are good enough to be enjoyable. Oh and feedbacks are welcome (post them on my channel). And if any of those who are translating videos need help with Japanese, I'd love to (I may not be of much help though)

I recommend Kubifuri's Genso Meteor and Jakuniku-kyoshoku. Both highly regarded on niconico and have a sort of cult following.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3F-kTrfKTRzjSx_XJMRRvsrSFGyi7WXt
Jakuniku part 2, subbed (by me)
Its theme has some overlap with Osana Reimu I think, but the series is much bigger in scale, and dives deeper into gensokyo politics and nature of youkai-human relationship.
Expect my subs to be of ESL quality though, lol

I think it might be better to start with Part 2, seeing how view count on my subbed versions dropped right after ep1 (could be a fault on my bad subs, but I think it has more to do with weirdly low resolution of ep1 and stiffer animations & crunchier audio of earlier episodes.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCT6hGaXcKGAvNXm2ypcMYj7R-BT936k_ (Kubifuri's uploads on YT, not subbed yet)
Genso Meteor is/feels heavier on Gensokyo politics. Got tight writing, nice twist etc. Climax is fantastic (which is true of Jakuniku as well). I'm thinking of translating the first few episodes sometime soon as a series teaser, as it's probably a better introduction to Kubifuri's world for people than older Jakuniku.

Koishi's Heart Throbbing Adventure (こいしのドキドキ大冒険) is another long series I would recommend. It's unfinished, and the series as a whole isn't as high on my list as Kubifuri's long stories or Osana Reimu though, I still enjoyed it especially in the earlier eps.

Some Iwara recommendations:

Maloxx (I loved his Mystia self-fuck video. Dunno if subbed or not. also on fantia & twitter)
MeV
古い(furui)
ニーソ
taka84
SIEN (I like their old Reisen video)
@nouguu (on twitter, nice Seija stuff)
いぬい(inui) (good animations for lewd mmd)
Alita_99G (I like his thick Nazurin vids)
Arrowhead (has a great Sanae binaural vid)
I think these people all use MMD.

There's a great non-Touhou Blender hentai/ero video creator called Blendy_13, who makes NTR videos (with proper start middle and end--feels more like ero manga than many 3D hentai contemporaries), and I'm hoping that someone will do Touhou videos in a style similar to his.

This site's good for finding 3D hentai/ero video creators. Each video in the list has thumbnail pic as well as tags. The site does not host videos, and there are some number of pages still on sight for deleted videos, so that's a but confusing and sad.
Use search within site feature and look for ダンス無し (no dance) and/or 性行為あり (has sexual action). some videos lack the tag, and some has both dance and fucking in separate segments, so I recommend you check whatever if you like the thumbnail.

About YT's automated comment censoring that can't be controlled by the channel (what an annoying feature it is, friggin hate it), I think one can hopefully maybe prevent that, if you go to Studio, Settings, and add individual users to "verified user" list. If the description of this feature is truthful, doing this gives always a free pass to the user's comment on your channel.

I'll see about doing that this coming week, my biggest holdup was trying to make subs look nice, color and size and placement and all (ie keeping the color coding for each character while also not interfering with the existing japanese subs)

one annoying aspect is that they were incredibly messy on mobile, unwatchable on some parts
reverting back to the white on black would solve that particular issue, but I'd have to see how things look when characters start talking over each other

Not true, as one of his last uploads (2017) suggest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xww_bklPKs

As for the Honorifics vs. no honorifics debate, I see it as a matter of personal taste. And personally, I'd prefer having natural-reading English, smart and well-though adaptation than having honorifics all the time. Leaving honorifics intact feels lazy to me.

If you haven't seen the series yet, look for Jakuniku-kyoshoku Gensokyo on YT also. it's Kubifuri's longest series, and perhaps my most favorite from him. It's made up of 3+1 arcs, and I've done translating 2 of them so far. Each of them can be watched on their own.

It being one of Kubifuri's earlier Touhou stuff, the series is definitely old, and might look and feel old, but the writing and direction probably won't disappoint. I really think many people will appreciate it a lot, if they can get past its somewhat unusual looking models and such.

Eat A Persimmon is indeed a milestone in this MMD drama world and among the ones I like the most, and it's great to have it translated again, even though I have yet to watch this voiced version (I'm not that much interested in fandubs personally). I wish Nikumuni was responsive on his Twitter though, so I could have him put those subs on his own video.

Here's the latest episode from a pretty long-lasting action MMD series (9 years in production this year!), Touhou Great Magic Road by まちやん:
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm39850090

Touhou Great Magic Road is also the action MMD series with the fastest production pace to date (3-4 months between episodes for a series of this quality, which sounds crazy in 2022).

Now another video got its subs back. This classic by Ga_koya (Alice vs Alice's PC Browsing History):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzCtgQM4WEI

This was among the videos from TouhouSubs which got auto-privated. By the way, speaking of which, I've just set up this archive compiling all auto-privated and some recently geoblocked subs from TouhouSubs, with some extras. As I consider his chances of coming back as next to none by now, I allowed myself to dig into his repository (I have full access) and also include some unfinished or incomplete subs, from videos he began to work on but never completed (those are mentioned). All classified by author with genre indicated in brackets and most representative works in parenthesis. I also included info folders containing original descriptions for all videos (including incomplete ones):
https://mega.nz/folder/zVIgQJjL#JQYUiEL-SDHqT7waM2t2SQ

I also take the opportunity to remind of TouhouSubs' public folder listing all subs from problematic videos (geoblocked or lack of permission) from when he was active, with subs from another retired translator named Celeste Melancholia (she only does Fantasy Kaleidoscope episodes for Manpuku Jinja's channel now, via me, with subs I do myself then send her for proofreading):

>...and I didn't know he also made MMD movies as KOJO. Rather reminiscent of Harumao's videos.. seems really well done. The last one was uploaded in 2018 though.
He also the author of a Star Trek series he had to abort following Paramount's "meltdown" about fanworks (they made new guidelines restricting you even further):
https://www.nicovideo.jp/series/26442

His style is really interesting but I never was able to get into his works because of that fake English computer voice he uses on all his videos, making me wonder what was the real point of it, from an artist's standpoint (parody, or simply wanting a distinctive but awkward signature, or simply wanting lines spoken aloud and viewers not being forced to read dialogue along with trying to follow the action*).
For me, we're clearly far off what a Harumao could produce, despite the neat ideas found in his productions. See https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm29417674 and https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm29417908 for better examples (or even better, this attempt by Chinese MMDer 毋銘, https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1ug411M7cm which an additional SFX version has also been made from, https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1mR4y1t7Xq))

*one of the reasons that type of voice have never worked that well from an artistic standpoint outside of the parodic, goofy and comedic scope (the robotic and monotonic sound will clash with your initial intentions, or simply ruin the intended mood), if you really want your lines spoken aloud because you can't imagine your content being presented otherwise, just get voice actors (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAvT2HZalv4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8YEq4wePCc for excellent examples)

Speaking of another MMD Star Trek series, that later became an original series after Paramount's 2016 meltdown about fanworks, here is this less known one by Hauzer (he's now into making rock arrangement albums):
https://www.nicovideo.jp/series/13236

It's rather babble-y but still deserves a look. Also note the huge progression curve between early and later episodes. A translation has been initiated by PlayingTarot a few years ago but he never came back to it despite his initial plans (oh, the legendary reliability of fan creators). I wish more people were interested in translating those obscure works, even if the DeepL+hardsub ripping tools+OCR combo have to be used.

Same remark for Mushishi Wriggle (which I talked about a few posts earlier): https://www.nicovideo.jp/series/63710
This gem clearly deserves a translation, or at least some interest. Note that Q-Ri does have a YouTube channel with all episodes uploaded but unfortunately, the vast majority has been geoblocked by SME (the only way to watch it is on Nico).

>> No.38138408

In my long post, I forgot that (Knockin On Toho's Door): https://www.nicovideo.jp/user/28645690/mylist/55749638

Which further illustrates my point exposed when I talked about KOJO's works. For productions that are so niche anyway, spoken dialogue is hardly a necessity. This series works absolute wonders despite the lack of music (only used in key moments). It's the expressions, characters' attitude and pacing, along with the careful sound design (using low quality SFX from those well-known free websites only!!) that makes all the difference.

While the english is jank on the subbed videos, they're surprisingly not so jank that you're left with an incomprehensible word salad and my dekinai ass is thinking about rewriting the subs (perhaps with a bit of assistance for the more tricky/unTL'd parts), based purely on existing subs and submitting them.
Do you guys think its a good idea? If so, I'll try my hand at rewriting the script for one of these and post it here for a quick review. The thought came to me while I was watching the subbed ones on how they just need a bit of clean up and I found myself capable of rewording most if not all lines into something more readable.
