If you've ever played a Romance of the Three Kingdoms game, it basically uses the same operating principles. Feudal Japan simulator where your actions are limited to the abilities of your officers. In comparison, it's streamlined such that you don't have to deal with which officers are located in which provinces, but the general concept is the same.

That said, it's a lot more linear in gameplay than a Romance game, what with all that plot stopping the game from being sandbox-style. You can generally decide which provinces to attack while the story progresses, but even if you don't attack anyone, someone will find a reason to declare war on you, so you'll chug along anyway. You're on loose rails in Sengoku Rance, but they're rails nontheless.

How you feel about /h/ being tossed in amidst all this is up to your personal preferences. People say that Sengoku Rance is too hilarious to fap to, and it's easy to see where they're coming from. It's also jarring sometimes to jump back and forth between turn based strategy battles and h-scenes, especially h-scenes which drag out the text, as if to provide you ample opportunity to rub one out to the CG image. More than a few times, you'll find you're just not in the fucking mood, or you were, but Rance ruins it.
