Nanase's clearly meant to be first, it's a major set up route and the true route literally just copies Nanase's route and then continues onwards. In theory you can read Rei's route/Misaki's route in either order, but I think it works better if you do Rei's route first, because of literally me. If you read Rei's route first, then he's this minor guy who doesn't do much who comes back way later in fatty's route (setup -> payoff), but if you read fatty's route first /ourguy/ is a major antagonist who accomplishes nothing and goes down like a bitch. I think the story flows a lot better if you read the routes in numbered order, each one has a bit of stuff to set up the next.

Kiminozo is so weird. It's way before my time and was apparently a big success, but it's super inconsistent. If you play the entire thing, I don't see how you walk out of it without perceiving it as a mixed bag but apparently plenty of people love it. The main three girls (Mitsuki, Haruka, and Akane) are the actual core part of the story and worth reading. Takayuki is automatically a massive dickbag if he picks anyone other than Haruka or Mitsuki by default but Akane is an important part of Takayuki's past so the drama with her fits in tonally. That said, Mitsuki has a ton of weird bad ends that don't fit the tone at all are totally out of place. Some of them unfortunately take quite a big chunk of your time. I wouldn't really say those are worth it either.

Everyone else is strictly a bonus/extra and here is where it becomes a crapshoot. I personally quite enjoyed Daikuuji's route. I'll admit the "sadistic, trash-talking midget girl" is a weakness for me, but it at least seemed like a reasonable fit put together well enough. Hoshino isn't really a route but more of just a bad end. However, her H scene is hot as fuck and I still use it from time to time, so that was worth it.

Homura has two routes. One is a pretty standard renai route. It's okay, but the premise of the entire route is (once again) Takayuki being a giant piece of shit so it's a little hard to swallow. Her other route is a bizarro yandere route. It's completely out of place but admittedly somewhat interesting for a while. That said, I found it to drag on too long and then the end gets really, really strange. I don't know, it's hard to really say it's worth reading but well it is radically different than the rest of the game.

Hotaru's route is complete garbage and completely retarded. It has no business existing. Even if you really, really like her design for some reason, the only H scene happens super early and then never again. Definitely a waste of time. Mayu's route I also did not like as mentioned earlier. It's not as offensively bad as Hotaru, but as a whole I thought it was pretty worthless.

That said, I found all the fandiscs and Kimonozo spinoffs to be extremely enjoyable. Even the Kiminozo Duelist game is pretty funny and a good time.

I got spoiled on the alien war aspect and on the chomp scene, and sometimes I wonder if I would be a Muv-Luv fan if I had played it blind. As it stands, I'd give it a solid 6 or 7. I think that's fair. Muv-luv is not really a game where I would consider every single scene/chapter to be amazing or anything. It's greater than the sum of its parts. I think the main reason for the very strong appeal is two-fold. 1. People really liked the characters (duh). 2. People had no idea about all the shit they go through. If you pretend you're just some innocent PC game player in 2003, you probably picked up Muv-Luv because it looked a fun bishoujo game. And well it is, but then you suddenly unlock the other part where shit gets strange with robots and military stuff and then you have those sad endings. Later Alternative comes in which ties everything together and all the characters you spend countless hours bonding with get their final moments and conclusions and it's mostly great. However if someone is already aware of certain things about the story, I can only imagine the impact on an emotional level is much, much smaller.

Obviously nostalgia plays a role here. I've been reading a lot of mixed views of kiminozo, and muvluv is heavily based off kiminozo, so it may not be enjoyable witout reading kiminozo first.
I'm legitimately asking since I haven't played much from that era.
