Someone who was using a similar user agent was probably evading and posting something that couldn't stay up if the site is to stay up, and therefore it was blacklisted it as a stopgap. As for what it would be in particular, who knows.

Compared to what?
If they're clearing cookies, not using specific IP ranges, and intentionally avoiding hash checks, then they are getting through most of the barriers that sites typically can use without introducing an account system.
I would assume those above checks have been tried and are less successful, since those are more common (see: mobile rangebans).

The more interesting question is why the user agent is an effective block to whatever content they're trying to keep in check. My guess is:
A. It's for a bot with a fixed user agent string of that Firefox Windows version, either preemptively or just recently.
B. This is actually an unintended catch of another user agent check.

It's probably not an accident though, given that it just popped up recently and only on select boards.

Oh no, you're precisely right, which is why I question why it was implemented as well.
If it is an automated bot (and that's just an assumption), it would just be a way to slow them down until they applied the fix, probably cycling between common user agents. But they would still have to make that fix, which would buy the mods/admins SOME time.
I'm only assuming it is a bot because someone manually doing this would just have to switch browsers or use a user agent spoofer extension, which is more trivial than rewriting code and redeploying bots. I could be wrong.

Basically it would have to be a very specific case for this particular check to be worthwhile to implement, relative to the negative consequences for other posters.

catbox is pretty damn stable as far as free, no-registration file hosts go.

If pomf.cat was new I would say it is potential, but it is a revival of a pomf clone that had been dead for years. Mind you, I find pomf.cat has better bandwidth for me, and I interchangeably use it for uploads below 75MB, so I do approve of it.
But my point is more that, even if you factor in periods of time where catbox has had reduced performance, was under maintenance, or uploads were temporarily disabled, catbox has been consistently available as a free, non-account upload service for most files, with the only real catch being filesize and (at least formerly) pruning old content. It's done this longer without a complete loss in service than any other pomf-like site, and if it really weren't that reliable of a service stuff like soundthreads would stop using it over time.

Now, as a far as catbox being absolutely unreachable without warning, I've only encountered that a handful of times over the years where it was down for everyone else as well, and unless you think the owner is lying that correlates with their status history: https://status.catbox.moe/history
I don't doubt what you're experiencing, but I would suspect you may be running into issues with routing/DNS that's causing instability or hitting bandwidth issues with high-bitrate streamable media rather than it being catbox itself.

Again, nothing against other alternatives that work, I just think catbox does a good job given how many people are constantly using it.

Not him, but I've had some issues with catbox, unrelated to any ISP routing issues, and not any on my network. I have my own DNS server, potentially I could be be getting cache misses that can't be resolved for some reason, but I doubt that's the case, and if it was it would be an upstream problem anyway. I could look into it more if people care, but it has been down a lot.

I can confirm that catbox's downtimes are more numerous than the ones mentioned on that site. The downtimes I'm referring to are most certainly not logged there because the main site itself was still accessible, but the uploader would fail to work and just churn out errors for an hour or two. Catbox's upload function constantly dying is the whole reason we started using pomf instead during the early 2020 sound threads. But then an even bigger issue appeared, where pomf was blocked by some people's ISPs and they were shit outta luck, which made us go back to using catbox and pray the thing didn't break again.

Admittedly I haven't seen Catbox shit the bed in a while, but then again I'm using it nowhere near as much as I used to.

The 4chan sounds player has been doing everything that can, and more. But more importantly, it's kept receiving updates and feedback. Meanwhile the first script's author said "like it or leave it" and then left it.
For fucks sake, you STILL can't adjust volume in the first script without going into the script itself and editing it.

The playlist addon makes every thread load longer on my end, so I prefer external sounds by default. I don't really care about the extra features since most of the time I just open up a sound image to quickly check what song it is and save it with 4chan X if I really like it. I'm also pretty used to making my own sound images the old fashioned way which takes very little time anyhow. I only use the playlist addon if I'm going into an archived sound thread.
