He has moments when he's surprisingly valiant about things, usually right at the end of problems, even with characters he royally screwed over (like Ran). However Rance is at his best when he's just being kind of mean and playful, not when he's repeatedly raping Ran.

This isn't quite correct. There are a rare few moments when he does the right thing for people after hearing enough about their troubles.

Forehead girl is a prime example of this at the end of her clear. After you see all her events trying to gather support to take down the Mouri and resurrect her house. Rance defeats the Mouri himself and she goes to join him only to get raped during the celebration with Rance completely forgetting about it after and insisting he'd never fuck a woman that looks like a child.

However, as her clear goes along she is told how unprepared she is to revive her house and how unrealistic it is, she eventually breaks down and explains that it's all for the sake of those who died trying to help her achieve it and that is why she tries so hard.

Rance reassures her he'll do something about it once he finishes invading all of Japan. Not for sex he doesn't want, all he asks is he keeps working hard and leaves her to it with a kind of sweet ending to a character who got nothing but bad events all game.

Mouri's specialty is footsoldiers. They're not that dangerous aside from being numerous. Shimazu's pretty dangerous, but on the routes where you fight them, all of them except Agireda defect. Demon Army's strong at the start, but once they start putting Infected and Monster units in, they're a joke. The Shimazu blitz is dangerous, but it only ever happens once, and after it there are about 10 turns worth of mandatory events before you're allowed to conquer any territory in Africa anyway. More than enough time to gain them back.

Re: taking on Takeda. On EZMODO and 1star at least I haven't had any trouble with their blitz. The tricky one was kousaka, but if you have the right troup setup he'll waste his assassinate on Suzume (who seems immune). After he wastes his turn, the rest of that fight is easy.

Sanada Tourin is in the front, and he has no foot soldiers protecting himself. His battle rating down might be tough to handle, but you can handle that one just on brute force.

The third and fourth are about even difficulty. If you're lucky, baba shouen will waste his commander charge early one (usually annihilates one of my units :< but oh well) and you can make back the points with natori or elina's attacks. Masakage's onrush seems potentially more dangerous, since he can use attacks if he starts by using it to take out your footsoldier, so I'd recommend a really, really well protected Ikkyu for one of the last 3/4, and your best set of 6 for the other, and hope that the units annihilated aren't killed.

... But it worked for me three times, so there has to be something to it, right?

Let's see... Theoretically, at least, you can take over most or even all of Takuga with Hanny terrorists, and Uesugi's easiest if you take your time, using only Rance to fight (scouting to make sure Uesugi's in combat, of course) then one attack on the next territory, after which the units get weaker.
