2009.10.28. DS55 and I had a rather interesting discussion last night.

DS55: Gip, can you think of any games you'd like to do that are also widely seeked by everyone?
Gip: It seems that everyone wants Baldr Sky Dive1 and Swan Song. And of course, Muv-Luv Alternative. Basically, all the fanboys read the EroGameScape top-list and believe that the top 70 games (~80% threshold) are must-plays. Well, look how that turned out for Family Project. It's #2 (and #8) on the list, but the VNDB rating isn't flattering, and there are scathing reviews such as this one. Let's take a look at the list again.
DS55: Kimi ga Nozomu Eien was very entertaining, and Muv-Luv Alternative could be decent. For Muv-Luv Alternative, I'll find that out soon enough even though there's no way I'm doing it.
Gip: Going down the list, we have Parfait Chocolat Second Brew at #4.
DS55: The heck is that? I've never heard of it. Well, some of the CG looks okay. At least I can safely say it's prettier than Narcissu. But the premise sounds corny.
Gip: Muv-Luv Alternative is #7. After that, you've got the Baldr games, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, and Swan Song. Hrm... scanning the list, there is nothing eyepopping in the top 70. Most of them are just supah popular picks or supah old. It's like those lists that say the Final Fantasy games are the best all-time.

DS55: I dare people who claim Final Fantasy X and its ilk are some of the best to try, for example, Okami, then come back.
Gip: Let's see... Katahane is at #68.
DS55: There's always room for yuri. But the sample pictures at VNDB are less than flattering.
Gip: This is the problem. ef is at #63, and it's not like it can be one-upped. Everything above it has either been translated, is being translated, has its dissenters, or is just plain uglier than it. Anything below the top 70 that's worth doing is lighthearted, so people will hate it anyway. There's nothing worth doing at the top.
DS55: Yeah, forget it. It was worth a try.
Gip: People always complain about how little English eroge there are. But a bunch of the top titles are in English development or are already in English. Then remove re-releases and old games, and you practically have nothing left. If people are complaining, then either the eroge medium as a whole has not developed as well as people would like to think, or it's because people are too damn picky. Nostalgia is what makes up most of the EGS top 70.
DS55: I vote for picky.

Now it's time for a test! We'll run through the EGS top 70 using our expanded criteria for picking a game. Let's elaborate on that before we show you our findings:

1. It must be PRETTY and SHINY: This means we want a game no older than 2006.12.22, which was the release date of ef - the first tale. This is what we'll call the three-year cutoff. We feel this cutoff is reasonable, because if the game is older, that means it's likely UGLY. Also, for all you pirating hypocrites out there, it's very difficult to obtain real copies of any game older than three years old. Not only are newer games more PRETTY and SHINY, there's a more-than-zero chance that people may actually purchase a real copy if they really want to support the industry! Of course, we at No Name Losers wouldn't care because we would release a standalone anyway. It's just some food for thought to anyone who wants to play that card.

2. It must not already be in English or being worked on in English by other people: Well, this is obvious. Don't want to waste our time, eh?

3. It must be an AVG (pure visual novel): Sure, games with strategy elements are fun and all, but it's just not what we're looking for. Sorry.

4. It must have no mecha. Mecha are UGLY: This rule took out a grand total of one game, Baldr Sky Dive1, and it would have been eliminated by rule 3, anyway.

5. Nonrepresentation: We eliminated all games with under 100 votes and games which were not on the PC. In every case, the game in question is only on the top 70 due to a small number of people giving inflated scores.

So, once all the dust settles, how many of the top 70 survive? Only 5, one of which is ef - the latter tale. (It doesn't get eliminated by rule 2 because we are doing it, not other people) You can see the results here! As for the other four?
