And here's the other cover of the book. You can't tell from the scan, but both covers have a really nice glossy finish that gives the butterflies a nice shimmering effect as you look at it.

Scanning any more would require that I damage the book, so you'll just have to use your imaginations and believe me when I say that Aoi Nishimata's version of the rabbit with too many nicknames is so cute and cuddly that I would actually feel bad about using her ears as handles while taking her from behind.

Can someone tell me what kind of fanbase Touho has in Japan? Is it a niche 'Otaku-game', or is it more mainstream?

Would a regular gamer there know about it?

It's a niche, but its a big fucking niche. Starting this year, Reitaisai (the annual Touhou convention) will be held at Tokyo Big Sight, the same place as Comic Market. Just the area where doujin music circles sell their CD's is the size of the dealer's room in a medium-sized US anime convention. Pretty much every artist who matters had done a Touhou book at some point. I've got a very lovely book by Aoi Nishimata (one of the artists behind Shuffle and Navel's other games) featuring the most adorable Yuyuko ever. And it seems like every video that Iosys puts out becomes a major internet meme in Japan (see: Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, Invisible Full Moon, Usatei, etc). So yeah, it's pretty huge among the gamer/otaku/hikky crowd.

So, it's "niche" in that it appeals directly to very specific demographics: masochistic gamers, and futanari fetishists, and crow tengu aficionados. Now, amongst the Japanese population of gamers, geeks, pedos, freaks, outcasts, hikikomoris, and other assorted pariahs, this might represent a large portion.

However, it cannot be called "mainstream" since it doesn't appeal to "normal" people. Compare this to Sazae-san, which all Japanese are required by law to watch every single day.

Part of that is that the Hakurei shrine maiden is the closest thing Gensokyo has to a government. It's an anarchist society that survives because a large portion of the population (i.e. everyone outside of the human village) has enough apocalyptic firepower to annihilate the world a dozen times over. So they're all trapped in a perpetual cold war and the only thing standing between them and oblivion is universal adherence to spell card rules.
