I took the last scene to be a special night where SHIKI turns into his old self that used to be friends with Shiki back when they were kids. Like with the scene in Kohaku’s route with the two of them speaking honesty to each other like in the old days. SHIKI was drugged up and used by Kohaku to become a monster that would do what she asked for so the SHIKI you talked to in the drinking dream moon felt different than the regular one. It worked on me as it talks of days gone by and the regrets that the old SHIKI has and his ultimate wish that the people he cared about continue to be happy with Shiki making sure that wish comes true. I don’t think it was meant to make you sympathize with SHIKI, it’s just two old friends talking for the last time.

Yeah, Melty Blood has a story mode in the Re-Act version of it. You should follow this order to get into Melty Blood:

Tsukihime -> Tsukihime PLUS DISC -> Kagetsu Tohya -> Melty Blood: Re-ACT -> Melty Blood: Act Cadenza -> Melty Blood: Actress Again: Current Code.

Re-act is the only one with a story mode while the other have arcade modes that aren't that important, but have some new stuff for certain characters.

I don't even know how normalfags play Melty Blood without being invested in tsukihime or any fighting game in general that has no story behind it. I think we have different standards on what makes a character sympathetic since to me it requires more than a sad backstory. SHIKI outside that one scene in Kohaku's route is just a one-note asshole. Tsukihime’s main flaw to me is Roa and SHIKI both are boring villains with no humanization, and part of the reason the maid routes are way above the others is that they don't get much screentime in either.
