Mountain of Faith was the first game I played yeeeeaarrss ago, so she was one of the first designs I've seen. For whatever reason I laughed my ass off the moment she showed up just because of how weird her face looks. Nowadays I don't even think it's that bad, but I well remember that time I first played.

there are some girls that ZUN drew in the early 2000s, in the style of EoSD/PCB/IN, which are often forgotten (and no mention of them on en-touhouwiki), with almost no fandoms.

They were posted on Team Shanghai Alice's former website (which still works in 2021 but modern browsers can't render the pages correctly).

Here's a Marisa drew by ZUN for this.

These girls are typically referred as Hourai Shoujo (not to be confused with Mokou's spellcard, Alice's Hourai doll, and DiPP the CD). The title is Hourai Shoujo-e Gensou ~ Picture（蓬莱少女絵幻想　～ Picture）

desu i think ZUN can definitely draw okay. ZUN's drawings in PC-98 era look fine to me. It's the higher definitions we are using make his shit part in his drawings increasingly noticeable. And he's not trying to improve either

To be fair some of the older PC-98 art was traced from other series, but other pieces I think it looked better because it doesn't have that handdrawn lopsided-ness the Windows game art has. Pixel art basically forces you to make it look nice and neat.

Imperishable Night has my favourite art of those 4, things like Kaguya's art in general and the way Reimu's hair is colored is what I like. But PCB Marisa looks pretty too, might be my favourite art of hers overall.
I don't particulary dislike the draws of the newest games but the one thing I miss is the way ZUN painted them, the new colouring seems empty in comparisson.

It's also the first time ZUN drew her cutely to me. Her older arts look like an old lady to me for some reason. Like she made me think of Genkai from Yuyu Hakusho, I think because of her wavy hair and fierce expression. Maybe it was also that her old dress was so poofy you couldn't see her form under it.

If they're protective charms, why doesn't she wear them on the inside? Aside from her body itself being a raging inferno, they should survive. There's also her shirt that partially burns off.
If they can handle the heat in general, it can handle the heat if they're inside her clothes inbetween layers. The only possible issue I see is in washing her clothes since the charms might become damaged.

He doesn't, but he hasn't drastically changed the way he draws to be more similar than "professionals" because there's no need to. He has global popularity and the technical skill of his drawings is one of the aspects of Touhou that he cares about the least.
Music, gameplay, story, character design, these are things that he and the fanbase value more, which in turn turns his normally amateur drawings into something iconic.

There's something about the art on TD that I dislike, I just don't dig how the characters look. Worse thing is I still can't put my finger on what exactly bothers me, it might be something as trivial as the hair.
But know that I think about it, Youmu doesn't look that bad. Has a nice dynamic pose, her face looks cute, skirt looks alright...it might be the fucking hair.
