This is my anecdotal experience and relevant more so for the United States, but I am in academia and work, teach, mentor, and interact with a lot of Chinese (Hong Kong and Taiwan included) and South Korean female internationals and very rarely with Japanese. That obviously has to do with a lot of trends regarding studying aboard and knowing/learning English, which the Japanese are not known for, but even in Japan the top academic institutions are very lopsided in terms of gender ratios. Look at Seoul University, which is around 40% women and Todai that is only 20%.

I have one Japanese colleague with a PhD that she earned in the US right now, and she pretty much left Japan because of the limited opportunities. When I was a student, I had one other Japanese peer that graduated from Todai and then did her PhD at my school, and she pretty much told me the same thing. If I look at the various graduate programs at my institution, I see lots of Chinese and some Korean students in the PhD and master's programs. You can argue that it's just the studying abroad factor, but the truth is it's not like Japanese women are staying in Japan to do it there either. But this is all regarding the highest levels of education and not more broadly, but I don't think the trends differ that much at those levels.
