I did a bit of an experiment.

Over the last month, I used two anki decks with different words words from core 6k. One used the anki default settings, while the other was different in these ways: steps for new cards are 1 15 1440 8640, for lapses 15, graduating interval is 15 days, easy interval is 6 days, new interval is 50%.

In deck 1, the using the default settings, I have a true retention rate of 73%. In deck 2, with the modified settings, I have a true retention rate of 89%.

Subjectively, it seemed easier to remember words from deck 2. It is also significantly quicker to complete my daily cards from deck 2.

Re: this subject there are occasional benefits from learning kanji even in listening. For example.
