What is this?

/jp/ has started on a project to translate the visual novel Hatsukoi.

Are you in need of translators?

Of course! Anyone with knowledge of Japanese (and English) is welcome to join in and start translating with the simple and easy-to-use REtrans™ Web Interface.

Are you in need of editors?

Definitely. You don't even need to know Japanese to help improve the English text, so your participation is encouraged.

What is the length/progress/ETA?

The total length of the content is approximately 32k lines. We have translated close to 10% of that as of this post. At our current rate of ~150 lines a day, we'll finish sometime in April of 2010. But the more translators we have, the faster everyone can enjoy the results! If we get to 400 lines a day, we'll finish before the end of the year.

A note to the translators:

If you're not going to follow the guidelines and use "these quotes", then leave a space before starting a field with a quote, AND add a space after the last character of a field if it happens to be a quote. It should look like this (<sp> = 1 space):

Pretty much all of the /jp/ demographic has seen this thread already. Those that are interested are probably keeping tabs but are waiting for the project to finish. Nobody seems to be editing at all though. Maybe when one route is finally finished.

Postan. I only visit /jp/ very occasionally, so I haven't seen this before.

I'm somewhat interested in editing. I don't have any knowledge of Japanese (beyond what little one picks up from watching anime and such), but I'm more than proficient enough in English to assist, I should think.

So I spent a bit of time reading through the previous threads and stuff, and figuring out how you're doing this.

So basically what you'd need me to do as an editor is: using the site you mention in the OP as the Translator interface, look through the various *.txt files, and proof read the %text column entries, editing if neccesary?

Also, is there a way to determine what entries have been modified since I last visited? I looked at the 'latest entries' file, but couldn't make head or tail of it.

The wrapping issue? The bad news is, you'll probably need to rewrite a subroutine or two to solve it. The good news is, it's probably the same subroutine or two you'd have to rewrite in order to ditch the monospace lettering for proportional lettering. I don't know enough about fonts, the Windows API, or PE executables to be of much help, but the text is being rendered onto a bitmap in memory at some point along the way. Find the code that decides where in that bitmap to render the text and you should be able to do as you please(word wrap, proportional lettering, justification, etc) with a little math and a little x86 assembly. And hopefully without other parts of the program shitting blood.

Runtime word wrapping is overrated shit. Calculate this stuff manually at script compile time and add spaces/newlines as necessary to wrap it nicely - infinitely less work and anyone can do it, not just assembler gurus.

I don't know how much effort it would take, but it'd be handy to have some way to track what's been translated since one last checked, and what's been edited.
Heck, I may just keep a text file keeping track of what I've checked and what I haven't, for the latter point. But I don't particularly fancy going through the entire project looking for the five lines someone's translated since last time I checked, or whatever.

Fully compliant CSV parsers will handle quoted newlines correctly. The one in the engine isn't fully compliant but it also handles quoted newlines --- this would be one record, for example:
