I won a cute head off of yahoo recently and I'm planning out the aesthetic/look I'm going for with it, super bummed out bc I found the perfect pair of eyes and then they sold out on mercari while I slept. Proxies usually take a while to place orders from there so I know they'd have sold out regardless but I'm still sad.

For flexability, Alice Collections 'Invisible' doll stand is great and easy to shop out of picture.
You also can't go wrong with a simple saddle style stand with a thin metal base for stability and easy jump poses.
If you want articulation of the hair and clothes, look into Obitsu's figure stands. They're small, so they won't hold a doll, but they're expandable and really easy to articulate and hold up clothes and hair. They're mostly clear plastic too, so easy to shop out.

If you look at this picture from last thread, you can just see where they shopped out the stands. (I circled in fine red if you zoom in) The ones on the side are the obitsu figure stands, and the one in the center is the main stand of the doll. It looks like a goose neck stand, which is what the Alice Collections stand is, but it may not be from them.

I haven't been able to take many photos recently, but the other day I was able to go out and try my new camera and lens. Not my best work, but I still need to work on understanding the tools I have, and the only way to do that is taking more photos. I think this is a good start! Before this I've been using the same camera for about 10 years, so moving to something new is very exciting.

Hey guys! I got my first anime styled BJD yesterday and I love her! I have 2 other 1/3 girls but they're more human looking. Absolutely adorable, but I wanted to come to get anime wig styling tips. I've heard people use a toothbrush and Elmer's glue, but I'm nervous. Is there a tutorial I can watch? I've looked it up a bit but it seems like most of what I am finding is wig making tutorials and one Danny Choo video of flat ironing a Smart Doll's hair and rubbing it down with hairspray. Not convinced...that being said, has anybody tried flat ironing their dolly's hair?

What you can do with a doll wig greatly depends on the fibers the wig is made from. If they're not Heat Resistant Fibers (HRF) or real hair (mohair etc.) then do not use any kind of heat! Regular synthetic fibers melt really easily with even low heat. If the wig is made of HRF then you can totally use a flat iron, curling iron or even a crimping iron to style and texture hair, just start with the lowest heat settings. I've never used glue, but just about any human styling product will work on a doll wig too, so I have used pomade and the like. Just make sure to stay away from anything with a color element or strong scents, as they may damage your doll. If you want to use anything aerosol do not apply it while the wig is on your doll.

Thank you! This is a 77mm LTD Pentax lens on a K-1 body. I do other photography as well, and I've been wanting to get this body for a long time. I'm excited to get out and do more with this combination when I get the time!

>>34045186
>>34049226
What this anon said. Unless it's specifically heat-resistant, don't let it get hot or it will just melt, but HRF can be styled almost like regular hair. Volks makes some really good styling products (their water wax is my favorite,) but honestly anything water-soluble will do you just fine depending on the look you want.

If this is a natural fiber wig (e.g. mohair,) the less you use on it the better. Wet your fingers lightly and use that to style, but don't ever saturate the hair, as a lot of these wigs are bonded with glue and can fall apart if they get too wet. I'm honestly not too experienced with those materials, and I'd love some styling tips with them myself, honestly!

>10-20k
Eh, cheap to me means less than 10k. The custom head market has blown up insanely over the past few years. It's hard for me to find a head that actually seems worth the insanely high price tags often attached to them. I'm about to bow out of an auction I've had my eye on because it's steadily approaching my upper limit of 15k, and 2 nips seem to be locked in a dedicated bid war driving up the price even more. I won't be surprised if it hits 30k by the time I wake up.

most proxies offer both auto-bidding (up to a fixed value) and snipe bid options. All the activity on an auction usually takes place in the last five minutes, and unless there's a buyout price bidding before then is usually a waste of time unless you think you can flex your wealth hard enough to discourage competing bids. But even so, there's always a bigger fish in the pond. It's brutal, but also why I like to spectate expensive auctions for fun.

Nice fabric choices. I would recommend looking up "stitch in the ditch" for the collar. If you're interested in getting the hems to drape more softly or you don't want the visible stitching on the next one, your machine probably has a blind hem stitch. If you get the obijime tied in a square knot instead of a granny knot it'll lie flat.

If you're just starting out, whatever DSLR they have at the store that's in your budget is a good first pick.

That sounds dismissive, but I used the same camera for many years and I was able to learn a lot from it before recently investing in something more modern. My first 'real' camera was a Canon Eos Rebel T3i with the stock 18-55mm kit lens it comes with. It's not the best at anything, but it was good enough for me to learn and grow and figure things out, and that's what helps you progress in your photography more than anything else.

Try new things, take lots of shitty photos, and shoot in RAW. In my time taking photos (not just of dolls!) I've probably taken tens of thousands- and most are completely useless, but the process of taking them was what I enjoyed, and those mishaps paved the way for me to take better photos in the future. (I also cherish some of the memories I captured along the way, too.) Don't be afraid to try new, weird things and just have fun, and over time you can look back and see how you've improved.

(If you've been taking photos for a while disregard all of this you likely know it already.)

TL;DR whatever canon/sony/nikon put out in the last few years that's in your budget, probably.

Echoing all of this, just want to point out that phone cameras in the last few generations of phones have gotten really good. Of course, you're going to have more editing options if you shoot in RAW on a proper camera, but for quick shots a phone camera can be good enough. Also, though maybe less relevant during the pandemic where everyone stays at home, the best camera is the one you're bringing with you.

>> No.34213113

>>34212856
Amen to this, phone cameras have come such a long way. Honestly the first thing I had that wasn't a disposable film camera was, of all things, a nintendo DSi. They are the epitome of a potato camera but it was all I had for a long time, and I learned to make the best of it, mostly just taking photos of things that mattered to me at that time. Even then, though, I learned a lot to get the best out of the toaster I had. These days I have a decent full-frame camera with a pretty solid lens with me most of the time, but sometimes I'll just grab my phone and shoot a few quick photos of something because it's faster and less effort and "good enough."

I think it also depends on the kind of photos you want to take. Someone who does high-action sports photography needs a different setup to an astrophotographer, and a wedding photographer's kit will differ from someone doing macro shots of flies. As far as phones go, my advice is play around and see how far you can push what you have and what you like (and dislike) about it. Figure out what interests you about doll photography (is it composing intricate scenes? portraits with a soft background? showcasing a specific feature like an outfit or the faceup?) and go from there. And be sure to share what you do in the meantime!

(My first doll photo was so bad someone here legitimately roasted it. Legitimately thanks, I think I've come a long way since then!)

Seconding this anon, there are a lot of hyper detailed fancy eyes lately, but not many that go for the aesthetics of the 80s-00s. I think only Ersa Flora is offering something like that regularly, and even then, it's only in a few colors. Small-iris anime eyes (ala Cowboy Bebop or Mushi-shi) are also basically non-existent if you were inclined to make them. Pic somewhat related, I still have no idea where Eris' eyes came from (I got her secondhand.)

There is also a trend right now of people creating and selling Follow-Me eyes (eyes that appear to move with the viewer), but in my experience the broad, shallow domes they use often make it a hassle to put them into the head, or make them appear sunken into the skull. It's usually alright for dolls with larger eyeholes, but for smaller sockets something that's either flat or significantly curved tends to work better. I'd like to see more experimentation with dome shape, honestly. A lot of the depth and refraction in an eye come from the glass/resin/etc above the iris.

As far as colors go, blue is probably the most common color I see. Brown animetic eyes have been a challenge to find, on the other hand. Gold, yellow, orange, red, and pink are all over the place, but actual browns are pretty uncommon. Pastels and super-saturated colors seem to be popular right now from what I've seen.

I've been interested in getting a resin bjd for a few years now but I live in the humid ass caribbean in a half wooden/cement house none of that fancy air sealed american shit, am I setting myself up for disappointment or can I do fine keeping my first doll in a relatively cool place along with basic cleaning care?

You should be OK with resin. Resin is pretty hardy when it comes to temp and humidity tolerance, direct sunlight is it's main issue. The main problem you'll have is the elastic string that holds the doll together won't last as long as it would in other climates. There are lots of products to help with humidity since these are Asian dolls after all and they have humid as fuck regions over there.

anyone know roughly the shipping cost of shipping a MDD body from Japan? idk how much they weigh

>> No.34239496

>>34238110
i ordered an MDD body from volks a couple weeks ago, and shipping was $30 though I ordered some other things like faceup supplies along with it.

>> No.34239787

>>34238110
Shouldn't be too bad directly from Volks at the moment but avoid Mandarake because their shipping is insane right now. Mercari and Y!JA have been hit and miss between reasonable and three-figure sums.

based, I heard a lot of bad stuff about volks dollfie white skin yellowing over time and I worried SWS might do the same.

I have semi white and white skin dolls, I think it depends on the batch. I’ve noticed some of my older semi white dolls seem to have less pink in their tone, but that might be just Volks adding more pink to later releases. I also have white skin dolls that have stayed the same but others yellow.
