I wish Nasu or Takeuchi would finally give us a serious answer to why Type-Moon never does English translations. At this point, every Japanese studio releases English versions of their novels if they can afford it, even every TM-adjacent developer translates Nasuverse games into English. We even have this silly situation where the new Melty Blood is getting an English release, but the VN it ties to doesn't.
I really want to hear what they actually have to say about this.

I really doubt that. You can see how much of a westaboo Nasu is in his own novels, it's plain as day (from vampires to King Arthur to him being obsessed with FROM Software games, he obviously doesn't find Japanese mythology as exciting as foreign myths), and I remember a story about how Takeuchi based both Arcueid and Saber on a transfer student he fell for in uni, or something like that.

It's hard to judge. KnK has 7 main movies which are relatively easy to watch for the typical anime fan. On the other the hand, you basically have to be a JOP to read the novels since it's pretty common knowledge that the fan T/L's are all hot garbage. Tsukihime is a VN which makes it more niche than anime films by default, but it's also a really, really famous one so lots of people have read it (plus it does actually have a T/L).

Then he makes CCC with 900 different sakuras, and in a game full of sex references the only character that has viriginity mentioned is Liz. HF adaption gets announced, he wants to do a rewrite, they don't do one and even keep Sakura saying she's not a virgin in, the movies are liked by the general public and suddenly you have Nasu saying shit like how "I was wrong" and "CCC wouldn't have happened". It’s still had some great moments, but a rewrite and more scenes between the charcters to better build their relationship sounds good to me. Lore dumps are actually handled very well, for the most part. Shiki doesn't have patience for long explanations, so you're not getting 15 minutes of kitchen lore dumps like in Heaven's Feel for example. Everything is to-the-point, you're only told what you need to know.
The only problem I have with Tsukihime is Shiki being sometimes dense (but to a much lesser extent than Shirou, or other similar protags), and surprisingly, not enough SoL. The original novel really doesn't let you know the girls as much as you'd want to.

I don't like the OP, it's thoroughly way too modern for my tastes although I can understand why it's there. Also, the newer soundtrack rearrangement is okay but I'm lukewarm to it. Not looking forward to how my favorite tracks are going to sound. Very likely they will overarrange and ruin Lamplight and Parting, and it's very likely the latter won't even be in the remake considering when it was played and used for.

It actually helps with Tsukihime. The font it uses drops a shadow a few pixels in distance (so that text won't disappear on white backgrounds), but when you upscale the font, this shadow doesn't get upscaled with it, and text starts blending in with visuals. It's not a huge deal, but it can be somewhat distracting.

Kinda offtopic but it's kinda confusing that VNs haven't moved to an engine based on Javascript entirely for portability purposes as shit as that is for performance and development cleanliness and I know there are several engines like that but they aren't widely used. The most performance intensive thing I seen in a VN was the fireworks effects in Katawa Shoujo and nothing else has really come close, since most of the increased "graphical fidelity" has come from clothes or facial animation.

One would think that adopting web technologies would allow for these things to look as good as they could be and cut costs down but Japan has stuck with ONScripter, KiriKiri 2, and other custom engines. I would've thought Type Moon would've abandoned their custom KiriKiri 2 stuff a long time ago for something like that for maximum portability.

>> No.34002659

>>34002541
Japanese developers in general are firm believes in OLD GOOD NEW BAD, which is something I actually respect about them. But I don't think it's a question of new technology. Those who still use engines like KiriKiri2 are using them because those engines are braindead simple to use. You don't need any knowledge in programming or anything, just open up the text editor and type away. And those developers who are not concerned about complexity, like Nitro+, use their own in-house engines. So there's no need for one size fits all framework.

I haven't seen anything close to the Katawa Shoujo fireworks graphically so far so when Japan decides they want to do that kind of stuff in their VNs, then that functionality will probably be hacked in their existing engines or some new engine based on 20 year old thinking will be made.

But as far as Ren'py goes, it's doomed to be western based. And as I said, if you want lowest common denominator, you really should be targeting Javascript. But looking at a Japanese programming languages survey based on job boards from HROG, it seems like Python is behind even C/C++. And the pay is higher in Python or Javascript than in C/C++ so yeah. I wouldn't term it impressive but I don't think any other visual novel did animated fireworks until that point outside of the opening. 4LS deserve some props for showing what Renpy could do other visual novel engines couldn't in terms of scene dynamism. It was actually a pain point in the demo release that it was noted in the release notes although was fixed more or less with optimizations and time.

Yeah, I think it's much more pronounced in the way where Type Moon likes to use sprite transformation paint fills and etc. and such even if it is "cheaper" than the particle stuff from KS. I wish I still had the KS demo for the non nerfed fireworks but I don't think it looked much difference. I think it was just there was more of them at once. Anyways, there was no minimum specifications which was why this problem got pointed out in the first place and people were surprised.

Mahoyo didn't need to be restricted to the resolution it was at. 4k would've been questionable at the time but they could've done 1920x1080 easily. And it's not like consoles at the time, PS3 or Xbox 360 wouldn't have been able to run them given how not graphically demanding they are then and even now. Look at the specifications Mahoyo demanded.

>Operating system (OS) XP/Vista/7
>Processor (CPU) 1 GHz Recommended: 2.66 GHz (multi-core)
>System memory (RAM) 1 GB
>Hard disk drive (HDD) 5 GB
>Video card (GPU) DirectX 9.0c compatible
>Other 1024x576 resolution
>A drive that supports dual-layer DVD-ROM (DVD-9)

Based on these specs alone which may or may not have been definitive, the only downside is needing a computer from the new millennia to run it (AMD Athlon at 1 GHz released in 2000). A harder requirement may be needing a DX9 capable GPU, but you could probably get away with running it in Swiftshader to do CPU rendering. So the only thing definitive was needing to be able to run XP with a big enough swap file for the RAM requirements. And you could probably do that with a Pentium but dear god, it would probably be a disaster.

>> No.34004287

>>34004069
Particle effects are more common now, but they used to be super rare. And in the cases where it was used for animated rain/snow, some of them used sprites instead and the real ones that did it were peanuts compared to the fireworks because the particle is predefined and static and only needs to fly in a semi-random path from one edge of the screen to another and it's gone. It's basically would be the same as doing a sprite transform, roughly, in terms of amortized cost. Of course, it's more complicated now with splashing and whatever fancy things they do to get them more realistic, but it took a while for VNs to get even somewhat fancy with using effects like that.

So Arc wouldn't be able to do anything about her, and Ciel would be on the move at this exact time. I'll get it when I have some free cash then.
>You're not trying to buy some obscure hipster's band, limited to 200 copies, vinyl pressing.
Knowing some Japanese developers, you might as well be doing that.

Something that has a real publisher/distributor (i.e. not doujin) will accept as many preorders as they get. Limited/first press editions stop being printed sometime shortly after the sale date so once they sell out it's over. Regular editions will stick around as long as said publisher/distributor is willing to keep them in print. It's kind of random on that last point. I've seen major label stuff go out of print after years whereas sometimes independent stuff stays around fine.

IIRC TM has some of KiriKiri creators in their staff so it's easier that way for them. It also seems Tsukihime is being developed on a brand new KiriKiri (Z)

They have to redraw every assets and animations for a 1080p release, it's not gonna happen.
They could if they're going to release Mahoyo 2 on consoles and need to port the first.

>> No.34005531

>>34005493
Mahoyo's assets were almost certainly downscaled for the final release. No way they actually made those at 576p.

I don't know I think it could go up to 900p with some elements, but I do not expect there were FHD assets

Doesn't look too active. Some good pull requests stuck though to modernize compiling it and make it faster. Bet Type-Moon have some sort of internal fork which is why they can't merge the pull requests.

Also who said they had to do that. They could run Waifu2x on it and call it a day. I prefer if they could fix up the output but that would be too much to ask of Type Moon to do.

Do I need to play anything before Melty Blood?

I was always wondering, what photos were used for backgrounds in Tsukihime? Was it public domain stuff?
And if it was, I was thinking that someone autistic enough could track down the original high-resolution photos, do some photoshopping, and make something like an HD 16:9 version of them.
