Had some Punjab tea with home-dried sassafras leaves this morning. I got the Punjab tea at an Indian grocery store. It has a kind of acerbic tinge to it similar to jasmine, but without the flowery note and with more of a traditional green tea note instead.

Absolutely use black tea. Don't bother with green tea and rum, green tea isn't good blended with much save for some herbs and possibly other types of teas.

The flavor of rum is hard to describe, it's one of those sui generis flavors, like how "root beer" tastes like the soda root beer and nothing else. It's a vaguely molasses, pineapple, coconut flavor with a bunch of unique fruit flavors in there, of course accompanied by the harsh note of the alcohol.

Okay, if you really want to get shitfaced, use whatever proportion of rum you want in your tea. I'm just suggesting 25-50 mL of rum per mug's worth of tea as best for flavor's sake: enough that you can taste the flavor of the rum, but not so much that you're drinking boiling hot liquor diluted with tea.

I really like Jasmine tea, that's what I've been drinking recently. Oolong is good too. And I never get tired of black tea. I started using maple syrup to sweeten it and it's great. Now I want to try it with rum, thanks for the idea.

I don't know what you expected that to taste like, it sounds absolutely vile. If you don't like tea, you don't like tea. If you need to choke it down, just throw a ton of sugar in it like a normal person instead of whatever you were trying to do there.

My comment about adding liquor wasn't so much for the sake of getting drunk off tea so much as it was to add a constructive flavor that harmonizes with the tea.

I hate it. Way worse than regular green tea (such as sencha)
The rice adds a toasty tone that I don’t like and spoils the clean taste of the tea. It’s also pretty horrible to clean out the soaked retains.
