I think I'm going to start doing structured grammar study. I already read through an introductory grammar book a couple of times, and I've got a decent intuitive grasp on syntax through reading.

I did a Mandarin course a few years before getting into Japanese. It definitely helped me get into Kanji with a bit more ease, but there is obviously a lot that isn't transferable.

At around the same time I learned to read Hangul for a laugh, but never really progressed into Korean beyond that, being familiar with Chinese radicals helped with Hangul, but really it was pretty dead simple. Anecdotally, a Japanese ex of mine who spoke conversational Korean reckoned that Korean was grammatically similar enough to Japanese to enable native speakers of one to easily pick up the other.

Why is it hard trying to speak Japanese while living with your partner who is Japanese and fluent?

Just to clarify, I don’t expect my partner to be my teacher. I know it’s on me to learn and teach myself. I struggle with being confident speaking.

I moved in with my partner who is Japanese American a year ago. He is fluent in both English and Japanese. We went to high school and college together and only spoke in English together. I took an interest in college in learning Japanese and took 5 different Japanese classes there as well. I wouldn’t say I’m quite a beginner but I’m definitely having trouble taking the leap to the next step of my growth. It’s hard for us to converse in Japanese despite us living at home. I think it’s because he spoke only Japanese with his family but since him and I only conversed in English it’s awkward and unnatural for him to just speak Japanese to me. Especially when I can’t understand at least 60-70% of what he is saying. Is anyone in a similar boat to this and have any advice for getting comfortable speaking with a significant other? Or with someone who is completely fluent in both?

I already know some manga that has furigana so I'd like to know if there are any novels or short stories that has furigana to help me in memorizing Kanji pronunciation.

I know this has probably been posted a million times, but it's my first post on this subreddit (though I've kept up with it for years) and I wanted to share my happiness.

People say you can do it in 1-1.5 years, some even say less than a year, but it took me 2 years.

I don't have that much free time because I work full time, but I was as diligent as I could. I set my goal to always do the daily review and AT LEAST 5 new characters a day, and if I was feeling up to it I kept going, but never more than 20 because my memory just stopped working at that point.

If you do the math, it should've been a little more than a year, but life gets in the way and some times I was forced to pause (moving to another state, a really difficult project at work, things like that). One time, after one of those periods of not studying, I spent three months just going over the kanji I kept getting wrong to make sure I learned them.

I'm aware that this just the beginning and I'm not perfect with it either, I keep a list of the kanji I forget more often than not so I can go back and check on them from time to time.

But I'm still proud of myself.

One day I'll write a full post about my Japanese journey, maybe even make a video, but, after many years of failed attempts to learn Japanese and having started and dropped the most famous books many times, this time I started with kanji before anything else with RTK. It's worked better than anything I've ever tried before, so... If you're on this journey, don't give up! Don't set expectations that are too high to keep up with for you.

Just because people did it in a few months doesn't mean you have to. That's what I kept thinking to myself, "at least I'm trying, at least I'm doing something, at least I'm not giving up". It doesn't matter how long it takes.

And it was all worth it!

I'm moving on to RTK3 now, and now I can read manga, set my phone to Japanese and go on with the books I'd dropped because the kanji got too complicated :)

I’ve lived in Japan for eight years and never managed to learn much Japanese. As a result, I’ve often felt embarrassed by my progress. Earlier this year I joined WaniKani and decided to get serious. I first studied Japanese in college, and although I was pretty good at grammar, kanji was my weak point. I stayed up all night cramming before the final, and forgot all the kanji again right after I took it. WaniKani teaches kanji with mnemonics to help remember and make sense of them, and reinforces the lessons with periodic reviews to make sure they stick. I talked with my professor not too long ago about the best methods for learning, memorizing, and making sure you have the basic vocabulary structure for the language you are studying.
He told me that there was no one method fits all, but that there are general techniques; so I brought up a question of pace. Again - a matter of personal comfort and the ability to maintain the lifestyle as it fits.

He recommended me some journals to read, and when I mentioned WaniKani, his face lit up. He said he wanted to include it in our beginning year, but that the faculty couldn't obtain a large enough discount for the service.

So, this is really embarrassing and completely my own fault, but I studied Japanese for 2 years in high school and barley know the basics due to my own lack of self discipline. I have adhd, and my brain will basically laser focus on something for a week or two and then forget about it for like four months.
