So, i want to get into Umineko. The VN seems really long so the only options i see are the anime or manga. I'd like to watch the anime but I've heard stuff about it (bad, too condensed, etc..) So which do i go for? Should i read the manga or just watch the anime anyways?

I would not recommend Umineko. In higurashi every chapter had a different premise. In Umineko every chapter (except for the last two) have the exact same premise, with the only important parts being the one liner hints to "solving" umineko that are given maybe once or twice a chapter. It's extremely repetitive and dull. Consider skimming large parts, or skip and go to Ciconia.

Umineko resets every episode save for some small changes, and it also retains the same overall structure and plot. Every episode up to around 6 or so is the same exact structure of murders and closed rooms, both of which don't really matter for solving Umineko. The main difference in each chapter are the meta sections and dialogue, most of which is magic fiction that isn't real. You can summarize what new developments happened in each episode in a paragraph each and you wouldn't be missing anything as long as you've read one of them.

Higurashi is shorter in comparison, but every chapter follows the same formula of Slice of Life stuff -> Build up of tension in the last part of the chapter -> Ending before starting a new chapter which is totally disconnected from the events of the previous one, which becomes absolute hell if you don't really enjoy R07's slice of life writing that much. Umineko is long as hell in comparison but just the pacing of everything is much better, which makes it more enjoyable.

Each murder story is a different possibility of what happened, and the meta world is just a meta discussion of them and the theories surrounding them. I personally found Umineko much more compelling because it immediately jumped straight into the action and I just wasn't a fan of how much slice of life stuff there was and how long it took to get good so to speak.

I mean it's a novel, narratives are important. But even then that's not true, the magic meta plot is Beatrice and Yasu's journey to get Battler to remember his sin.

No, the events of Rokkenjima and Ange in 1998 do not require magic but the metaplot where they discuss the events of the various games, along with Battler and everyone's souls travelling to the Golden Land can be interpreted as magic existing. It's up to your own personal interpretation of course, and it's left open ended. But by no means is the meta stuff explicitly not real.

Again, it's left ambiguous. They're more 'real' than the fictions of the murder-bottles. but whether or not it's real is still left deliberately vague and up to you to decide. The events of the message bottle murders are undeniably fiction even in the context of Umineko, but I still think fiction-within-fiction can be impactful and compelling. Like off the top of my head all of the moments of Natsuhi caring for everyone and taking over as the head of the Ushiromiya family or Rosa trying to save Maria in her last moments are absolutely fiction written by Yasu but they were genuinely heartfelt and impactful in my opinion.

Kind of, even if this were the case I don't think it'd necessarily be a bad thing because discussion of the murder theories are really enjoyable and the logic battles between Battler and Beatrice are some of the highlights of Umineko for me, but also narratives are important. It's a novel. But even then I don't think it's just a sole vehicle for narrative or discussion of theories, again it the metaplot also has characters in themselves like all of the Witches who have their own personalities and backstories and are pretty compelling in their own right and the entire metaplot is about Battler's souls' journey to the Golden Land along with him remembering his sin right? Then you have all of the metastuff with Ange and how that relates to the catbox and Ange coming to terms with her family's death and etc etc etc everything that happened in Episode 8. So it's not just like them discussing theories, it's also pretty important for the characters and their arcs.

Are we using different words for what the metaplot is? Because almost all of Umineko takes place in the 'metaplot' right? If you cut all of the Metaplot out of Umineko it would be like 6 disconnected stories in which different events take place on Rokkenjima, and then the Magic ending without like the heartfelt goodbyes and the emotion of Ange keeping the catbox closed right? The metaplot wasn't like something that you could have kept or thrown out, the metaplot was literally central to all of the main character's arcs in the story. It's like cutting out all of the characterisation of Higurashi and then keeping the moments where everyone kills each other and then saying that this is what Higurashi is really about and that only a fucking idiot needs anything else.

I never researched this recent tulpa meme, but I've essentially had something similar in my head for 20 years.
It hasn't caused me any chronic mental illnesses, but it is taxing on your brain. However, In the early years when it was the most active, I had an encounter that taught me how serious it actually could be. I was in an anime convention with a friend who knew about my "condition", we were just walking around, talking about this and that, having a good time. The next memory I have is laying down in an ambulance. Apparently my friend pointed out a cosplayer of my "tulpa" to me, and I quickly went unresponsive and catatonic on the spot.
That was extremely fucked up and really fucking scary. Despite our long evolutionary history, you can glitch out the entire human brain just like that with nothing more than a conflict in high level thought processes...

In hindsight you could maybe argue it was solvable because of Beato's and Shannon's relationship since episode 2, where Beato is supportive of Shannon's love. Beato's support for Shannon's love extends into episode 3 as well, and in episode 4, Beato says Battler's sin isn't between Battler and Beatrice. I sure as hell didn't solve it with that alone though.
In episode 5, George being an incel also puts emphasis on Battler's and Shannon's relationship (he wouldn't be jealous just because of Battler being chuuni) but everything should be solvable by episode 4.
