Suika is based on (or even IS) Shuten-douji, a drunken demon from Mount Oe. According to the legend Shuten-douji, before becoming an oni, was a human boy who was trained to be a Shinto Priest. One day, during a festival, he got drunk and started scaring people while wearing an oni mask. At the end of the day he became a real Oni.

This thread will die, but I was recently trying to find information on hihi'irokane. It was a mythical metal harder than diamond and could not rust. Marisa in Curiosities of Lotus Asia hoarded a bunch of scrap metal after fruitless attempts in finding it. Rinnosuke admits he has a few and agrees to repair the mini-hakkero with it in exchange for her collection, and ends up finding the sword of kusanagi in it without her knowing its value or that it's made out of hihi'irokane.
Anyways, this metal isn't from some ancient mythology but apparently stemmed from a cult from somewhere between 30's and 70's that claimed to have an ancient text called the Takenouchi Documents describing a global advanced civilization ruled by the Japanese emperor billions of years ago. I'm still in the middle of looking them up and can see they also talk about UFO's and Jesus in Japan.

I saw this thread teetering off page 10, I knew it was bound to die after I posted, but it does not matter if I managed to say my piece and at least one other person read it.
And I'm reading those threads right now after feeling stupid that I somehow missed them. Mythology and lore interests me the most, it's why I like SMT and unsurprisingly is probably the same reason ZUN likes it. One day, when I'm finished reading everything, this thread or this thread's ancestor will live again. I feel like the comments on tanuki and kappa were cheeky jokes.
Anyways, if Runnosuke found the mirror and magatama, this could make him the rightful emperor of Japan.

Kaku Seiga's design is similar to the girl in the Zuntata logo (Taito's in-house band; ZUN's nickname is a coincidence, but he was employed at Taito from 1998-2007), which is in turn based on mythological depictions of celestial beings from various cultures. E.g. Chinese mythological beings known as 飞天, often translated as 'harpies' or 'fairies', and Kinnara from Hindu/Buddhist mythology, who can pass between realms.

It's basically just Theosophy's Atlantis, root races, etc but with a Japanese focus, some Nazis had their own version. But the typical educational anime look of it makes so much more bizarre, at least it's better than the more creepy and gaudy paintings cults end to adore.
Japan was at the center of an ancient global utopia, we now live in a dystopia because the gods punished the rest of a world for disobeying Japan, and to return to this utopia Japan should become the center of a one-world government.
Jesus, Muhammad, Moses, Confucius, Buddha, and all that were all originally Japanese. And something something aliens.

Not >>33238070, but ZUN started drawing Cirno's wings as detached ice shards instead of pointy fairy wings. Look at her appearance throughout various games. https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Cirno

On the subject of Cirno, some characters mentioned that her tan wasn't just a tan and was a sign of something happening, but it was never explained what: https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Strange_Creators_of_Outer_World/Who's_Who_of_Humans_%26_Youkai_in_Gensokyo/Tanned_Cirno
According to that article, tanned Cirno is a parody of tanned Sakura in MvC, who herself is a parody of dark Ryu. Thus the thing that's happening to Cirno was likely her becoming corrupted by power/losing her fairyity to madness. https://streetfighter.fandom.com/wiki/Satsui_no_Hado
Incidentally, it doesn't mention it, but it's likely her sunflower is a reference to evil Ryu directly, see image.

As someone who has looked into this

Calling Carroll a pedophile for the naked kid paintings he had would be like calling a modern day old lady with naked cherub paintings in her house a pedophile. TECHNICALLY those look like naked babies but the painting is meant to represent purity instead of lewdness. Many contemporaries among his time had similar paintings, and nobody from back then would've found them out of the ordinary.

Someone who has lived with very young children will know that they're naked a large amount of the time. Paintings back then often tried to reflect that period of youthful innocence.

This shit is basically a clickbait tier rumor, it sounds scandalous for the creator of alice in wonderland to be a pedo so that's what people say. But if you look into this shit you'll find it was a norm to have paintings like that and saying they were lewd back then would be seen as absurd and just indicative of your own issues.

They're probably based on the biwa and koto tsukumogamis depicted in the Hyakkiyakou Emaki.
'Benben' is the sound a biwa makes when it's strummed. Yatsuhashi was a famous musician.
Benben's spellcards reference the Heike Monogatari (e.g. Vengeful Spirit "Hoichi the Earless") which you might be familiar with if you've ever seen Kwaidan. Heike Monogatari (which tells of the history of the Heike clan) was passed down and performed by biwa houshi who were blind biwa-playing minstrels who would perform for money.

I was going through random threads in the archives like I the bored autist I am, and found something I thought deserved to be posted here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vjc_lfbVkA

Anon, in ancient Chinese magic and philosphy, particularly in wuxing (lit. "five elements"), the color associated with the element of earth is yellow. Since Japan literally based their entire culture off of China, they imported wuxing as well (where it's known as "gogyou"). The symbol in the middle of the elements, a pentagram, was interpreted in Japan as a seiman (a pentagram used in Onmyodo magic and Shinto mysticism). The Shinto text "Kiki" uses metaphors based on wuxing and explains genealogies of gods through wuxing as well. This is why "The Ground's Color is Yellow" is the title for the song associated with the Hakurei shrine, a Shinto shrine currently owned by shrine maiden Hakurei Reimu.

Also the first setence of the classic Chinese poem "Thousand Character Classic" is literally "The sky is black, the earth is yellow; space and time are vast and limitless". The legendary Japanese scholar Wani Kishi is said to have translated the "Thousand Character Classic" from Chinese into Japanese. The only sources of Wani's life are the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, the two foundational Shinto texts. In fact, the Kojiki mentions the classic by name. So it's no wonder that that title was chosen for the music track. Oh and the element of earth (symbolized by yellow), according to wuxing, has a perfect balance of ying and yang. Reimu has the Hakurei Ying Yang Orb. In AoCF, the remix has "~ Primrose" attached to the end. Makes sense considering the title of the game, but it more has to do with the fact that primroses are yellow. Like the earth and like Reimu's ascot. What's more is that primroses are considered spring plants in Japanese. AoCF takes place in the spring before HSiFS and Reimu's main season associated with her in that game is, well, spring. So there you are anon.

>Meh, it was classic "muh we wuz advanced kingdom and shiet".
Obligatory outsider meme aside, absolutely. From some Theosophists to some Nazis and Neo-Nazis themselves to some 60's-80's Afrocentric cults, it's just another weirdo belief that x people is actually descendant of some advanced aliens, everyone wants a piece of that narcissistic pie.
>Scientology still has the most unique cult lore of all time
I both agree and disagree. Maybe it's because people almost never mention anything beyond Xenu and celebrities, but there's something quite boring about Scientology to me, maybe because it really is unique, Hubbard's own scams and Thelema with a pseudo-scientific coat, while almost every other cult can generically fit in certain bigger movements and a long list of things it's ripping off. Less people mention the crazier shit like the original OT8 and Hubbard claiming he would reincarnate as the Antichrist, or him sailing around the world and trying to find any government that would accept his teachings before being kicked.

I've been resisting from posting this for weeks since it's becoming off-topic, but on the topic of Japanese cults: Something I never seen mentioned in English is the inspiration for the last SZS opening reference a Japanese cult from the 60's and 70's that got into a scandal over, from what I can understand, the higher members believing they got a signal from UFO's and would be whisked away anytime now(?). They changed some more obvious lyrics over fear that surviving members would cause commotion. They still have a monument in Hokkaido they built, interpreting Ainu legend to have aliens.

SoPM has an article written by Aya in 1983 (pic related), about an incident where Kisume crawled out of a well and started chucking human remains at some playing children. Yukari immediately appeared and pulled a Russian-style cover story, even denying that the bones were human remains at all, and later had the well filled with dirt. Considering how Yukari has acted at other occasions (like in WaHH, when she was telling Kasen about the purpose of Zashiki-warashi) it seems that she maintains the balance of Gensokyo by telling lies, much like a benevolent dictator. The last thing she wants the humans of Gensokyo to realize is just how she keeps all the youkai fed, and what her grand goal is.

She wears Yin-Yang symbols on her clothing. The perfect Taoist ruler is an invisible one, who works tirelessly behind the scenes but allows their subjects to feel like they accomplished everything by themselves.

Her meeting with Miko in AoCF is hilarious. Miko has heard of Yukari by reputation, and seems mildly awed by her. But when Yukari doesn't show her the same respect, she flies into a rage and Byakuren of all people has to step in to defuse things. Miko normally *never* gets angry, but she can't stand being treated as one of the sheeple.

Here's some general information about the Ministry of Right and Wrong
>founded by the Juuou, the Ten Kings, AKA the Ten Judges of Hell, according to Perfect Memento in Strict Sense
>in order to keep up with the rising number of souls to be judged, the old system of spiritual transmigration was changed to the current system (where a lesser yama reads out your sins in court, beats the shit out of you, and then delivers your sentence without any chance for defendant testimony)
>additionally, more judges were created from the jizo population to reduce the workload on the Ten Kings
>however, due to the rising human population, the Ministry was created as the number of judges could no longer keep up
And the actual organization itself is composed of
>10 Yama (most likely the Ten Kings)
>the lesser judges and kishin chiefs
>the shinigami working under the lesser judges and lesser oni under the kishin
And because Hecatia is one of the leaders of the organization according to Eiki in VFiS, wouldn't that imply she is one of the Ten Kings? After all, the yama at the top of the ministry are likely the original ten judges of the dead, unless they happened to somehow retire or get booted from the position via corporate takeover or something, I dunno.

Something else that's interesting is that the Ministry does not involve the/an Excuse Jizou at all, too, considering there is no one defending the souls on trial at any level in the Ministry's court system. Additionally, it seems the Ministry is based more on non-Japanese Buddhism considering Japan invokes 13 Kings, rather than 10 (http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/sai-no-kawara.html#10kings))

Additionally, there are six realms the yama can judge a soul to be reincarnated to, all of which are part of the stages of suffering.
>Hell (the billions of countless realms of suffering)
>Hungry Ghosts (Netherworld)
>Animal (Animal Realm)
>Human (as in you become a human again)
>Heaven (the Celestial Realm, which may is likely to share ties to the Lunar Capital, as the Dragon Palace IS the Lunar Capital itself)

I don't think all of this is niche, but I think it's good to have all of it linked together in such a way that's more convenient.

>King Shinkou the Immovable (AKA Qin Guang Wang and the leader of the nine other Kings)
>King Shoukou the Enlightened One
>King Soutei the Wisest
>King Fukan of Virtuous Conduct
>King Enma the Merciful Savior
>King Henjyou of the Future
>King Taizan of Medicine and Healing
>King Byoudou of Mercy and Compassion
>King Toshi of Strength and Wisdom
>King Gotoutenrin of Limitless Light and Life
Originally, each king would set before the soul a trial and if they could pass just one, they would be guaranteed a good next life.

Just wondering, but is there any more information on the Jade Emperor in Touhou? I'd imagine he'd be one of the fuckers in the Lunar Capital, considering all the big shots and heavenly motherfuckers are strongly associated with the Lunarians.

There's no english page about hama-ya, but I'm referring to how miko/anime miko shoot arrows at things sometimes. These would be the closest relevant pages. The first one has a link to the Japanese page about the arrows.

>She practices whatever generic anime shrine maidens practice when they fight youkai, which is generally similar to how onmyouji are portrayed.
IIRC, onmyoudo was basically merged into Buddhism/Shintoism so for all intents and purposes whatever shit Reimu and Sanae pull, they're bound to make use of it even if it isn't necessarily their intention just because it's so thoroughly meshed into the practices and beliefs of those religions in Japan.
>From around the 9th century during the Heian period, Onmyōdō influenced the local folk religions that later in the early 19th century would be named Shinto and Goryō worship (御霊信仰) in Japan, developing into a system unique to Japan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onmy%C5%8Dd%C5%8D))

Why would witchcraft be considered something bad? Japan literaly had magicians as high-ranking officials (Onmyōji).

Magic is considered evil only in abrahamic religions (and even not in all of them, eg. Hasidic Jews practice Kabbalah, and there are literal magical rituals descibed in Talmud).

So can someone explain Tsukumo to me? I mean, I get that they are tools that gained a spirit either from being treated very well or very poorly, but I thought that a core precept to Shinto was that everything housed a spirit? Because it's animism?

The spirit isn't necessarily sapient. The tsukumogami's spirit became sapient.

I feel like this is like a 2200's historian saying American Women from the "free love period" didn't shower or shave and took copious amounts of drugs and all dressed like Janice Joplin.
Like sure, some did and the surviving records have a lot of evidence supporting it, but I doubt every noble woman looked like that. Maybe I'm wrong.

They're partners. In a 1v1 fight its hinted Kanako could probably beat Suwako, shes done it in the past, but it would be close and theres no reason to. Kanako has ambition and is willing to aim for greater things than just sitting in her shrine all day but she also fears death from lack of faith while Suwako does not. Suwako has powers useful to Kanako but she uses them less out of fear or fealty and more out of friendship. I mean, would you let you ages old friend die from lack of faith anon?

It's not a matter of fighting, in the backstory, Kanako had to use Suwako's powers to get the people to follow her, so it's still really just Suwako's shrine in the end with Kanako as the face of it.

That diagram also seems to depict the fashions of the aristocracy. Kaguya's adoptive parents were peasants, so it's likely that she would have dressed more plainly (although Mokou might not have). Note also that the Heian period was multiple centuries long, and that fashions change noticeably on the scale of generations.

I think it's because she's a shinrei.

But she clearly didnt? She had followers, Suwako had followers, and Kanako rusted the weapons of Suwako's followers. She only needed Suwako to gain the faith of her followers, she can gain faith on her own, its just easier to do so with Suwakos help.

one thing that could definitely be updated here is that this stage background is a picture from an alicesoft (pretty sure it's from an early rance title) game

Why does this need to be a general, anon?

This thread's OP here. I have no idea why that anon have done that. I only put the last threads in the thread's description, so it would be easier for people to find them. I never intended for it to be a General. These threads have never been posted one after another, there's always been a couple of days or weeks between them.

Blame the >>33874219 's OP, anon.

the teeth dye faded after a while so they had to do it again after a period of time, also the dye would stain the lips so they used lipstick to cover the stains.
the brown where shaved or plucked and redrewn on.
also it was common for women of that time to cut bangs when they got married so mokou and kaguya got married at some point...
also i during that period noble women wore red pants under all the layers to act as a pad and also they thought that it helped with period cramps and infertility...so yeah...mokou is wearing period pants and she's going commando.
also i don't think that mokou would keep doing all the beauty stuff, but on the other side kaguya would and she would look like the pic

Komakusa Dayuu theory I saw on twitter:
Folklore as to the origin of the name of the plant komakusa (that can be seen in stage 3 and that Dayuu takes her name from): - a woman called Okoma has an ill daughter - she has a dream in which she's told to pick a plant from the top of Mount Ontake - she climbs the mountain and makes medicine from the plant - this saves her daughter's life and the plant is named after her (first okogusa and later komakusa).
Ontake has an interesting legend that says its 5 lakes were created by 5 dragon gods.
This connection might explain the dragon-themed elements of Dayuu's design and theme title etc.
I imagine ZUN was researching a lot of dragon-related folklore when coming up with characters for the game considering the title 'kouryuudou'.

>> No.33899857

>>33899766
I should add that although it's interesting, the connection is perhaps a little tenuous.
The whole dragon thing might be just to illustrate her Yakuza-ness like ZUN said he tried to do with her theme.
