Not the anon you were replying to but Gil's personality is pretty consistent. In FSN, Gil's deal is that the world has gone soft and there's too much unneeded crap. So he wants to mud the whole to see who are strong enough to survive, and thus be deemed worthy.
Meanwhile, Extra series is set in a verse where humanity is on the brink of extinction and people have to fight to survive. So Gil is viewed as less of an asshole there because that is pretty much the sort of world he likes. The people in the Extra verse would be seen as people who have proved their worth by making it in this post-apocalyptic future.

Why would anyone think that the 'true' ending could possibly be part of the dullest route in the history of Fate/Stay Night? Seriously each scene following the boy master and his pals from Fuyuki as they fight assorted servants has been indistinguishable compared to the others. Aside from the wormy imagery, the route's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of writing, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Nasu vetoed the idea of Takeuchi directing the route; he made sure the route would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his theatrical releases. The Heaven's Feel route might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Fate route in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the scenes were terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time Sakura jumped on Shirou's dick, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched her legs like an educated prostitute."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Nasu's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Heaven's Feel by the same Urobuchi. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Heaven's Feel at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to rewatch Fate/Zero." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Heaven's Feel" you are, in fact, trained to rewatch Fate/Zero.

I genuinely believe that Fate/Stay Night is the greatest work of literature yet written. It's certainly one of the most detailed and longest by word count, and no, most of that is not bloat (give me any paragraph and I'll explain why it is needed, for the most part). If I had it my way, it would be material in college courses. Now, I've started reading more literature this year just to prove myself wrong. Because there's a lot out there I haven't read and if I end up liking something even more, that'd be awesome. And I've read some really great things as a result. That's the power of good literature, well, it's the power of any really smart art in any medium, but after a century really obsessed with quick thrills and sheer entertainment, there's really no more reliable way to get that specific fix than with good classic lit. And it's not for the details or the world building at all.

Ray Bradbury listed three criteria in Fahrenheit 451 for fulfilling art, that is to say art that benefits you and uplifts you in the long term as opposed to entertainment which just fills the time you enjoy it for (and I'm not trying to shit on entertainment, but we have a lot of it available to us so it's not really an important thing to find and celebrate). Meaning; an artistic intention to get some sort of point or message across (what does heroism mean in the modern world). Leisure; the pacing and personal time to reflect upon the messages of the story (those "SoL" aspects of FSN give that pacing, allow the characters to grow and breathe, and are also reflections of the kinds of epics that FSN routinely draws influence from such as The Odyssey. Food and hospitality are just as important in those epics). Relatability; a grounding force that allows us to use the story's message in our own lives (for instance, we can't be superheroes, but the juxtaposition of the heroic question and major themes learning to treat women with respect is not coincidence).

FSN was yes, structured as a three-act story and any adaptation that is less going to come across as less. Less meaningful, less serious. People who never read the VN love F/Z and say it's more serious due to "adults"? No, they just want to watch entertainment where cool guys do cool guy stuff. And F/Z is kind of smart as well, so all in all it's a great show. But if they don't want to experience something where more broken characters struggle and finds ways to live with problems that might actually affect the reader's lives for the better, well, not everyone likes the same stuff. But it's their loss, and it's a pretty big one.

I read FSN almost 7 years ago and I still learn new things about it that I love. Part of that is because I've actually been retranslating it. The amount of research, detail, and work that has gone into this project of mine has even further shown me new things to love and appreciate, and given me somehow an even deeper connection with the book. There's nothing I've done in my life that I've felt better about.

Kind of funny that this is right in a sense. Mahoyo didn't capture a cult following like Tsukihime did, nor did it become a paragon of popularity like fate. It's just right in the middle. Whilst I know popularity doesn't mean something good, after reading Mahoyo I came to the conclusion that it's the worst of the good Type Moon things. It just doesn't stand out on its own other than story and visuals. I think once the long awaited terrible translation comes out, TM english readers will come to understand how middling Mahoyo is. What? How is the story standing out somehow not good enough? Anyways maybe Mahoyo is not personally to a reader's taste, but I would never describe it as "middling". It's a very unique story in the medium with far better writing than you typically get. Nasu takes great strides to make something simple like Aoko walking into a classroom to meet Soujuuruu amazing. The visuals and OST undoubted elevate it, but it would make an excellent novel or two on its own.

I feel like Fate/Apocrypha characters don't really get any sort of appreciation aside from waifuposting since most of people watched have the terrible adaptation instead of reading the light novels (which is hard to blame them given how the translations aren't complete).
But holy fucking shit, I'm so damn tired of seeing the same, shitty, unfunny, redundant jokes made about him made by ironic weebs and normalfags, and i absolutely hate how Astolfo have been COMPLETELY reduced to nothing to just the butt of a joke of shitty trap memes, and the recent... cosplay made the situation so MUCH fucking worse that it made stop visiting some websites just to avoid those shitty jokes and memes.

I feel like FGO is the one that contributed to the problem the most given how a ton of art I've seen of Astolfo is tagged just Fate/Grand Order instead of Fate/Apocrypha.
I don't have a problem with his normal outfit because the reasoning does make sense and fits his legends, but man, his casual outfit is where the problem is created in the first place, and FGO made the problem so much worse by adding that school uniform as well as his Saber class outfit.
