I did six years of Japanese study in school and never made any headway on kanji, just started RTK (after a couple years of no study) and holy fuck it is actually working well. Heisig is a genius. Learned more in a month of RTK than 6 years of "write this character 20 times". I do have some existing vocabulary and expose that might be helping but still amazed with the progress I've been making (I do about 20 new characters a day, and some review on anki or with my handwritten flashcards).

you know that i use a j-j dictionary but it's not a game changer. people who don't use j-j dictionaries can build their understanding of words too, it just happens more slowly.

some more thoughts on this:
- krashen argues that most words are encountered in friendly contexts. this means that as long as you immerse being able to recall the meaning of a word in isolation is quite a useless skill to have. i'm not saying that it doesn't happen though. most of the time you can make a context-independent memory from the first couple of reviews. TSCs or even plain sentence cards are perfect for the job.

There's technically nothing wrong with the font, it's just using an old jp bitmap font which I'm not used to. I finished the deck with Noto. The problem is I can't figure out how to tell Windows which specific font I want it to use. I'll try adding the font manually like that and report back
