Finished Sakura no Uta. Wow, what a work. By far the most insightful and intelligent work I've read in a long, long time. It feels almost insane that someone wrote it in 2016, because it captures modern 2020 life in the Information Age perfectly.
It talks about the internet exposes us to the malice of all of humanity. How simply being a good person isn't enough to avoid criticism and personal attacks. How science is eroding idealism. How the fundamental ways in which we interact with people are impacting our lives.
There are a lot of observations I've quietly had about life that Sakura no Uta brings up and discusses at length. I feel like I understand and have a much better grasp of so things now.
But at the same time, I also feel some degree of despair. Sakura no Uta paints a grim look at life, one where we are constantly exposed to the malice of all of humanity and can only survive by building our own "holy grounds" (聖域) with those closest to us.
That's a summary of the game of course, but I can't help but feel that maybe there really is nothing but pain left in our humanity's future. All the hope and gleaming optimistic is dead in the past. We have the internet now and the global connection is breeding infinite pain.
Anyway, to continue this negativity, I should say that while I consider Sakura no Uta a phenomenal work, one that seems impossible for a human to have written, it also is by no means flawless. The narrative structure in particular is actually baffling.
"Non-linear" is an understatement, and for much of the game you have barely any idea what's going on. The mysteries in Sakura no Uta are brain-busting, and the text is extremely difficult, with tons of highly technical texts that feel ripped straight of a science journal.
I think that Sakura no Uta is a goldmine of wisdom and value. But like a real goldmine, you have to dig through a lot of rock to get the gold, and it's not always a pleasant process. For me, though, the gold was worth it in the end. Scaji is a god, confirmed.

try it, if you can get through the shit prose and unnecessarily padded writing it is. The world building and generally plot I found to be really enjoyable.

Although even though i was able to look past the shit writing style for most of the game the constant mentioning of events that just happened as if the writer thinks the reader has a memory of a gold fish combined with constant repitition that was present throughout the game makes the last arc feel extremely stangant and drawn out espeically in the 1st half of the final route as plot progress feels as if it grinded to a halt more so than any other part of the game.... I only had to put the game on hold once after each route, but that last route I have put on hold about 3 times so far.

Finished Kara no Shoujo 3.

Have I grown exceedingly jaded over the years, or was the game kind of shit? Production values were pretty good but that’s really only good I can say about it. First thing I can say without spoiling anything is that the game is an overall letdown as a mystery. I'd want to say it's more drama-focused this time around but the new characters are weak and the old guard doesn't get developed in an interesting way either. And the iffy plot developments.

Structure wise it’s mostly the same as previous games but less obtuse, slightly for the better: NG+ has very little new content aside from few scenes and the two actual plot differences hardly change anything before an arbitrary cut-off point. The first proper non-game over ending you get is callously called “Unsolved case”, but it’s only “unsolved” in the sense that the plot decides to cut off there before protag and co. even question the arrested suspect. I’m not expecting a grand finale out of a non-true ending, but at least in previous games the other endings actually attempted to be fucking endings in some manner even if they left mysteries open. Here it just arbitrarily cuts off literally mid-case, fuck you, start from the very beginning for the usual Innocent Grey rigamaroo: replay through the entire thing with a handful of new scenes sprinkled in between, almost none of which add anything meaningful enough to warrant a full replay. The new scenes do have a lot of new CGs so you can’t fault the devs for lack of effort, but they’re all stuff that was already revealed or alluded to on first playthrough. While technically new, it’s still just padding in terms of plot. Nothing really new here if you've played the previous ones.

As one saving grace there’s a lot less map movement and other choices than previous games, so less having to restart the game several times over because you missed an optional encounter or didn’t get enough hidden points or something, though I followed a walkthrough on second playthrough just in case because IG has made me paranoid. You’d guess catching certain character on second playthrough would change stuff, but no. Yaginuma doesn’t as much as get redeemed or proven valuable either, the plot just decides not to kill him this time around and one completely unrelated clue just doesn't exist for no reason on first playthrough. At first I thought the skip only seen text function was also broken for second playthrough and was ready to drop the game then and there because I’ve just had it with IG’s bullshit a long time ago, but then I realized they just put the trial content at the beginning of second playthrough as well. For some reason.

But yeah, the mysteries and overall story weren’t that interesting. The two previous games at least had stuff that directly had to do with the main characters themselves, but in this case all of importance gets put on hold for what is essentially ends up being a side story for characters that don't matter in the long rung. And then the plot takes a massive nosedive: Rokushiki is just a boring villain since he just returns to doing what he's been doing, mostly for cheap drama, while directly showing his manipulation also makes him a worse character since we never saw it in the first game and it was implied fucking up his patients took years. In this sort of case tell don't show can be more effective, but in this Ks3 we see it first hand: Rokushiki isn’t a smart villain – he’s a wizard who turns everyone else into a drooling ingrate the moment he enters the scene. It just relies on characters acting retarded rather than him being clever. Yaginuma’s decision could perhaps be excused if he didn’t literally know what type of women Rokushiki kills, and Fumiya's blackmail seemed pretty far-fetched as well: "Oh no, someone found me masturbating to a painting I stole, let's help an escaped serial killer (who’s very likely to kill my sister as well – which literally happens in one bad end) kidnap another victim so he won't tattle about my fantasies!"

Everything after time skip was weak as well. Tangentially related stuff that just so happens to be related to main plot by sheer coincidence, with a slew of new, even weaker characters that the game has no time to develop. It doesn’t feel like Reiji and co. are advancing the plot, more like the plot itself just decides to give them bread crumbs. Naori’s motive for everything was retarded as well, when it's something you'd expect the game to heavily focus on considering it's supposed to be a direct follow-up to KnS2. Even the artsy fartsy novel parts were paced better in previous titles and made you guess how they’re connected to the actual case, whereas here it’s all given in one fucking go with a plain “oh right, here’s the last part, lol”.

And the characters. Second game also had the problem of lacking of a strong main heroine, but it’s even worse here. None of the new heroines are interesting and old ones aren't faring well either. Yukari is still such a bore and her entire character hasn’t developed anywhere from “I hope nii-san is doing okay but I dare not directly ask him about anything” for the entire trilogy so it’s not like she’s an interesting bouncing board for Reiji, and the game wastes time sloppily solving the Kyoko relationship. The devs probably realized the protagonist has zero chemistry with anyone, and decided to fix it. How, you ask? Stella becomes close with the protagonist – I’m not shitting you – completely off screen during said 6 year time skip. Fucking wow. Male characters aren’t doing much better: Masaki’s characterization goes absolutely nowhere despite the game introducing a new therapist character for him and all the blabbing about his supposed issues, muted reactions to people around him dying and having been Rokushiki’s patient. It’s all just a waste of time.

Also one thing I somehow didn’t really pay attention to until finishing and reading some EGS reviews is that the game has almost no explicit ero at all – the sex and gorey scenes that are there are hardly more risque than you’d seen in non-H anime. Maybe it’s that way because IG's ongoing trend with their latest all-ages games, possibly preparation for eventual overseas sales. Personally I’m not that bothered, but worth mentioning that this eroge is quite literally not even an eroge, unless you count the rare nipple. It’s a fucking 15+ title at most.

As one technical issue, I’d suggest staying away from the in-game notebook before the devs patch things out because apparently they fucked up and there’s at least one spoiles there before things happen in-game proper, f.ex. Rokushiki gets listed as 逃亡者 long before it happens.

The very last parts have some alright scenes, mainly because of production values, but overall the whole plot and characters feel underdeveloped, especially everything after the timeskip seems rushed. I mean it may be an alright ride if you've played the previous games and *really* want to see a conclusion for every single character, and by that I mean every single charactar because that's what the game spends a good while doing – there’s technically only one end that’s labelled true, but you might as well do all three proper endings since they’re not really mutually exclusive content wise and show what happened to nearly everyone you can possibly think of. Spoiler: nearly everyone gets a sappy happy ending. But having a conclusion is the only thing the game is good for, otherwise it’s just not on par with the previous ones.

In short: good plots are dead, likable heroines are gone, ero is non-existent, the system that breaks pacing is only slightly less unfriendly than previous games and this whole medium is fucking dead and I hope Innocent Grey will soon follow. What a weak way to end this series.

You sorta can do that, if you savescum A LOT. Especially Lily is a god if you savescum levels and training smartly, and do all training you can before "evolving". (training often doesn't give much of an additional chance for a stat up, but the carry-over chance is also there, so it's good to balance leveling and training to an extend for example, there's also data out there that gives you the exact results of training so you know how to tackle this)
But generally speaking, you do want monsters, largely because having multiple ones of the same kind is very strong, as they all share exp and lvl. So one of them attacks, basically all get the exp. That's in part because they can permanently die, so that when you get new ones they aren't weak.

The more you savescum, and the smarter you do it, the easier the game gets in general. Doing little to none of it, the game is not going to let you steamroll, ever. Keep in mind that sometimes time may be important, so having just 1 god isn't great.

As long as it's the same monster type, they share. I think you can have up to 4..?
But yeah, your main characters might be stronger for a while. But given the nature of the game rewarding speed in general, and for some story events even require it if you want a certain outcome, you kinda need a full party to perform well, split your characters and make good use out of your MC abilities. You make the game a lot easier if you decide to grind those, as they include things like teleporting a unit to any place or getting a unit anywhere to "retire" so they heal up and you can redeploy them the next turn. These tools makes fast exploration and beating stages quite nicely possible. It also makes hunting for hidden passages easy, as you can save and then teleport try them, loading should there be nothing.

The main problem that game has is that the routes of all the other girls really don't fit at all, one of them is about dating a girl that has a yandere stalker for example.
If you want something that is more focused read 生命のスペア, same writer, artist and company and pretty similar except it's a kinetic novel this time.

Whilst I generally liked the endings since I'm a sap for clichés and happy endings, especially since the endings in the last two games were pretty rough. You make a ton of valid points about how the execution for a lot of the stuff in kns3 was shit. If I had to add some other shit that irked me it would be Fumiya suddenly turning into a massive creep who is obsessed with Touko going as far as to steal a painting for ??? reasons and kidnapping her daughter presumably to rape her. Whilst my memory of the last two games is a little fuzzy on specific details, I don't recall anything hinting towards Fumiya being so sexually obsessed with Touko. Another being how many aspects of Masaki's story just get fucking gutted for a meme relationship his sister is on death row yet he doesn't visit her once? or even the game depicting her execution? or his entire shit with Fuyumi and Michiru being thrown to the wind, which was probably done so they could shill his meme relationship with Yukari
Overall, I'd probably give it a 6 or 7 out of 10. I did have fun reading most of it and I did get a pretty big emotional kick from the "True" ending, but in retrospect, there's a lot of dumb shit to digest.
