Well, you don't really have to use the command line much, if at all, in Linux, and many programs have a Linux alternative.

But to answer your question, do you use any software that has no Linux alternative? Do other people who would be uncomfortable using Linux use your laptop? I suppose I could give you a better answer if you tell me why _you_ don't want to use Linux.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying that it takes up more disk space over time, or are you asking why Vista requires more hard disk space than previous versions of Windows?

>>3173395
No, not really. You need to have the CPU in a motherboard, so unless you have another CPU or motherboard, there's no way to single out one of the components. However, I have built several computers and I have not once seen a CPU that I knew for sure to be bad. However, I have seen several bad motherboards. I would think that the motherboard would be more likely.

Hey, my father is having problems with one of his computers and he's at his wit's end. He's not computer-stupid, but somehow he has this virus on that one computer that constantly says "You have a virus on your computer. Windows has found an unregistered version of Windows Antivirus 2010 on your computer. Please buy the registered version."

Both he and I have looked online, and we found a guide using Malwarebytes to get rid of it, and I think that worked. It required booting in safemode to get rid of it, but when he reboots it after getting it out, it comes back.

Seems like there's a trojan or something that reinstalls it, but we can't find it. Fuck, I even went in there and deleted everything related to the damn virus manually; files and registry entries, all according to a list I found online that had the items that were related to the virus. Rebooted, and it's back. Fuck, he even went in and manually deleted everything after that, just to make sure I didn't miss anything, and it still came back.

It's not really my problem, and he's pretty much resigned to just decide whether to format the whole thing or get it checked by some tech guy, but he's my dad, and I want to help him out.

Any suggestions?

Well, I don't know anything about that specific virus, but personally, I would just reformat. See, the problem is that once your computer is known to have been compromised, you can't ever be completely sure that you've gotten rid of everything. It all depends on which you consider to be worse. Having to reinstall your operating system, or having a potentially compromised system. That's the manufacturer of the processor, not the computer. Let's try finding out what video card you have the other way that I mentioned.

I understand this is probably a bit confusing for you, but since the other methods we tried didn't work, this would be the best way to do it.

Right-click My Computer, then click Properties in the menu that comes up. A window that says System Properties will come up. In this window, click on the tab that says Hardware. Once you're on this tab, click the button that says Device Manager.

Let me know once you've gotten that far. If any of that is confusing, just let me know.

Alright, I need you to do a few more things.

Right-click on "NVIDIA Quadro NVS with AGP8X", then click Properties on the menu that appears. A window should open with the title "NVIDIA Quadro NVS with AGP8X Properties". In that window, click the tab that says Details. On that tab, there should be a drop-down box. You should be able to select "Hardware Ids" with that drop-down box.

The textarea should show a few lines that look like this:
PCI/VEN_15AD&DEV_0405&SUBSYS_040515AD&REV_00

I need you to tell me what the first line that looks like that says.

Alright, Windows is identifying the card correctly, but let's try making sure the drivers are up to date. Apparently NVIDIA has a utility to automatically detect what drivers you need, I probably should have checked to see if they did instead of having you go through all that. Sorry. But anyway, see if this utility will work for you.

Tech support you there? I just woke up and noticed this thread.

You see, last wednesday/thursday I was playing PSO with /v/ when suddenly my comp shut down. As I was about to turn it on again i noticed some strange noises and the second after that smoke started to come out of the cpu.

Freaked out afraid to burn down the house so i unplugged everything and waited to se what to do next. Only smoke came out, didn't notice any fire. After opening the case i noticed this smell like burnt popcorn coming out of it.

So Tech support, what can i do? what can be saved and what do i have to buy? I'm currently on my sis' comp, but it's not the same. I tried to see if my HD was fine by plugging it to her comp, but noticed it has a different cable setup so i gave up, any advice on that?

The first thing I would check is if you have the latest drivers for your video card.

>>3174947
Everything other than the CPU and maybe the motherboard should be fine. It sounds like something stopped the fan on the CPU's heatsink and caused it to overheat. I actually had the same thing happen to me, except the CPU still worked, even though the temperature sensors said it went over 100 degrees Celsius. I still don't know how that CPU didn't burn up.

As for the hard drive, most likely your hard drive is SATA and the drives in your sister's computer are PATA. I'm guessing that your hard drive has a small (probably red) connector a bit wider than one centimeter and a power connector that goes into the hard drive next to it, and your sister's drives have a cable that's flat and about 2 inches wide, with a power connector that has 4 wires, correct?

That actually works out better for you, because you should be able to connect your drive to her computer. Her computer should have the 4-pin power connectors that your computer uses.

For your hard drive, the ribbon cable should run from the hard drive to a header on the motherboard. Look in your sister's computer, and see if there is a similar header on the motherboard.

Could you describe what exactly the flickering looks like?

>>3175064
Well, if her computer has an SATA hard drive, then it likely only has one PATA channel. You might have to put the hard drive on the same channel as the DVD drive. Do you have a ribbon cable with three connectors, and do you know how to set the jumpers properly?

>>3175077
Well, I believe Windows Vista asks you if you want to run the autorun script, whereas Windows XP does not. That might be what's causing the difference. There should be a file on the flash drive called "autorun.inf". It might be hidden, so you might have to enable showing hidden files. If you delete it, you shouldn't have any more problems.

>> No.3175221

>There are no kana for ye, yi, or wu, as these syllables do not occur in Japanese, though ye is believed to have existed in pre-Classical Japanese (prior to the advent of kana), and is generally represented for purposes of reconstruction by the kanji 江. In later periods, the syllable we (katakana ヱ, hiragana ゑ) came to be realized as [jɛ], as demonstrated by 1600s-era European sources, but later merged with the vowel e. It was eliminated from official orthography in 1946. In modern orthography, ye may be written いぇ, イェ.

Well, RAID isn't really meant as a backup solution, it's meant to provide reliability for servers or other applications where uptime is important. If you have two drives, you would probably be better off just storing your stuff on one and backing it up onto the other.
