When I hit the D-pad under keyconfig, it shows up like it is mapped, but then only the analog works. D-pad does nothing.

Do something with joy2key. I guess map keyboard up to dpad up, keyboard left to dpad left, etc.

I'm just getting into 12.3. Never really played SWR seriously. Should I be using the default controls, or should I set up my own?

The 360 controller suffers from the same problem.

Set your own however you like it. Popular controls are square for A, X=B, then triangle or O for C, and R1 for dash. You change controls by going to profiles, 2nd option, pick the profile.

In the older Touhou games they mapped fine.
Newer ones you need a program like x-padder.
When I used Joy2key the piece of shit wouldn't let me do diagonals.

I'm not OP, but I'm using that driver and I'm still having the same problem as OP.

That's weird, because it works just fine for me. I was trying to get my Hori to work with it and it wouldn't pick up so I started using the DS3, but after fiddling a bit with joy2key the Hori's working fine so now I'm using that.

Joy2key won't pick up DS3, but Xpadder will. That should solve your problem OP.

When I download xpadder and scan with jotti, it says there are trojans... :< I only scanned it cause I got it off some random site. The official site is asking for money it seems.

OP, you should be able to do Control Panel -> Game Controllers, select the controller from a list, go to properties, and switch the analog and D-pad axes.

SIMPLE ANSWER USE JOY2KEY to configure movement ONLY, and leave the buttons as you want them.
the reason you can't normally use the d-pad, is because the PC detects up,down,left, and right as BUTTONS not DIRECTIONS.
where touhou 10.5 and 12.3 both attempt to set all four directions automatically

I play with a gamepad. Feels good man, I do way better at the Touhou games with it.
