Once a shitton ended up in a goodwill, I remember seeing the online auctions go nuts last year. A lot of people sell off their dolls to fund other interests or needs, too. If I ever left I'd want my dolls to go to someone who enjoys them.

Someone who was in the hobby passed away recently, and apparently her dolls went up at an estate sale. Given their value, it may be worth it to write a clause in the will dictating where they'll go.

I've seen single-collector liquidations on Mandarake. One of my Dollfie Dream bodies was uhhhh /uniquely customized/ and I saw five or six dolls with identical mutilations go up for sale over the course of a week. Have also come across people getting rid of entire collections at once.
I think Dollfie Dreams have a better chance of being rehomed than resin BJDs. They retain value better because they're materially-stable and easy to repair.

Hi, I don't know much about dolls yet, I collect figures. And I'm thinking of making a doll that looks like an actual character, who will never ever get a doll or a figure.
So I'm wondering how feasible this is, if I were to look up parts and clothes and whatever and try to assemble them, or if you think it's hopeless if I don't have any doll related skills.

I have seen some amazing ones while looking at doll photos. Image related, that one is spot on. Those seemed to be quite customized though, I don't think I could do good makeup or such.
I have seen others too, where it looks like as if the doll was just "cosplaying" the character, it was not close enough. If I can only make an uncanny one that's sort of similar to the character, then I'd rather not.

Like someone else mentioned their interests may have changed. Second hand outlets like Manda give credit. Heads alone are far more valuable so it goes without explanation why you'd ¥ahoo them instead. I don't have a minifee, but they seem reasonably popular, and judging by looking at them, it's probably a combination of a robust joint system+ good head sculpts. Their sanding service seem hit or miss, so you might want to look elsewhere if you don't feel like sanding down seams.

The price range does seem fairly normal for that size, but there's plenty of lines that are cheaper. Den of Angels has a thread for dolls that are under $300, but that's usually just the doll, clothes not included. I paind $130 for this Resinsoul Wei, but after clothes, wig, eyes, ect. the final price was like $320. Shipping is a killer, lemme tell you.

Little dolls in that size can wear a lot of clothes -- with the exception of headwear, your best bet is looking for clothes for Blythe dolls. They're incredibly popular with collectors, and many people put the heads on Obitsu/Azone bodies because they have better articulation than the stock Blythe ones. Finding ones that don't have oils in them is a nightmare. Their oil sprays vex me too... maybe mineral oil in a spray bottle? Don't take my word on that, but whatever it is has yet to fuck up a doll's face, at least. For similar reasons I haven't experimented too much with spritzing oils on doll parts. This anon is telling the truth but as long as you budget and spend within your means (don't blow rent/food money on doll shit, basically be responsible) you too can have a relatively expensive hobby, just at a slower pace to people more able to turn dollars into dolls.

That said, for budget dolls, Parabox/Obitsu are good on the vinyl side. On the resin side, I hear Resin Soul is the go-to budget option but some people are divided on quality. There's no rush, anon. You've got time to think it over and sock away money in the meantime.

One of the big things about hybrids is color, and sometimes two different companies will have glaringly different colors for their basic skin tone. The other factor is the size of the neck joint; if it's way bigger on one, it'll either not fit/be really noticeable.

Posabilitly can be improved in a number of ways and isn't terribly hard, ranging from restringing(lots of people are intimidated by this, but just make sure you know where everything goes and you shouldn't have a problem), sueding(literally just putting small pieces of thin leather inside joints with elmer's glue) or wiring(putting wire inside the limbs alongside the string). I have a resinsoul and did ALL of these, with the wire being the most successful. I have a more expensive Ringdoll and had to do NONE of them, poses great right out of the box.

Not that anon, but I have a related question. I don't know much about gear at all. Is there a good ring light for doll stuff, or is it all basically the same? I always get put-off by the weird round light reflections in eyes whenever people use them (in dolls and for anything else,) but I can't argue with the results.

As an aside, whoever maintains the thread should cobble together a list of handy doll gear -- not just for photofags, but stuff to remove stains or make it easier to maintain wigs and stuff as well.

>Open to any thoughts or suggestions on the matter (I know gear doesn't matter in the hands of a good photographer, but it can certainly make things easier.)

Long fast lenses: narrow the view and blur the background the closer you push toward the doll. - Convenient for your typical shut-in's environment. good for doll portrait but is very limiting, you'll end up with the same kind of picture.

Normal lenses - Same view as the human eye. Faster ones like 35 and 50mm lenses can create blur if needed like longer lenses (push real close) but if you back up you can capture scenes like desktops and bedrooms. Most versatile, best option.

Wider lenses: Widen the view and capture scenery, architecture and interiors - this is really more of an artist's focal length when it comes to dolls. Suitable for landscapes and architecture. Think of those amazing pictures you've seen on twitter with Yokohama or Hong Kong in the background. Requires a lot of planning to be stunning. Like I said, more of an artist's focal length

I'm a figure collector, but have never bought a doll before. Heavily tempted to get the Lina Inverse dollfie out of love for Slayers. To my understanding dollfie and dolls in general need some sort of preventative care to make sure their clothes don't stain, the body doesn't mess up, and the hair looks right correct? What would I need to buy/do/get for Lina if she is the only doll I plan to get and don't intend to give her different outfits? Dollfie Dreams tend to go pretty quickly on secondhand sales, be it a character doll or just a regular DD with nice customization. For dolls, one big benefit for secondhand buyers is that they won't have to pay international shipping for this massive box, so that's always been nice when I sell. Resin dolls are definitely much harder to sell. I've noticed highly desirable brands like Fairyland and Volks go quickly but not always, art dolls seem to sell the easiest (especially if the artist has since moved on from dollmaking), and if it's a mid to low tier brand or not in at least great condition, good fucking luck unless you're cutting the price.

Only semi-related, but you see a lot of really fantastic condition western dolls at estate sales. There's a lot of size variety, so there's a good chance that your doll has a grandma doll fashion soul sister out there. I think for DDs/SDs, that is going to be the Madame Alexander Cissy doll.

I see this recommendation often here of spraying a character doll head with MSC but I really don’t recommend it. Especially to a new owner who’s never had experience spraying it, you could end up with clumps on the face ruining the face. Even if you sprayed the doll well you’re going to end up ruining the gloss finishes. Also washing an out-fit right away is not something I recommend either if it’s intricate and made in limited quantities. The fabric might bleed on to lighter parts of the garment or the metal parts loose tarnish. I think the best advice is avoid touching the face (try to find white cotton gloves to handle her) use a well made head cap to protect from wig staining, and buy a nice body stocking for the doll to wear under her clothes. I’ve been collecting dollfies for 16 years and I never had to spray a doll with MSC to keep her nice and the only time I bothered washing a limited Volks outfit ended badly.

Most of the stain prevention stuff has been covered, but I'll add my two cents. Unless she has a limited body, which is rare, she'll be on a standard body which means everything below the neck that's not clothes is easily and readily replaceable. Just a body stocking should be more than enough to worry about staining, but the head and face paint is the most precious part of limited dolls. So don't touch her face, and use a light wig cap to protect her head if her wig comes on a dark wig cap.

You want a surfactant like Synthrapol (fancy, fabric-specific) or Dawn (dish soap) to dissolve any excess chemically-unbound dye, plus a lot of water changes so the piece can move freely and in a low dye concentration, plus an absorbant like Shout Color Catcher sheets that will pull extra dye out of the water. Then pat dry between towels and dry flat. Red is the fuckiest color.
