It's a paste made out of fermented ingredients like soy beans and barely and such. It's just added to water or stock to make miso soup but you can use it for a lot of other things.

Never had Miso, I only eat spicy ramen.

I find it's easier to scoop up the tofu when it's still floating in something, so I don't save it for last, or at least I don't drink all the broth and then eat the tofu, you can kind of slurp it all up in one go; probably the best way.
