Can you guys recommend any guro VNs? Looking at the "guro" tag in vndb, it only lists three games, including this one. GSS is after all very tame when it comes to guro and I know of other BlackCyc games.

No, it's neither readable, let alone valid English. GSS is comparatively ATLAS-compatible in that it is possible to understand most everything that's going on, but you need to have at least decent-ish listening comprehension, and manually give parts of the sentences to ATLAS as it often works out better that way than when you give it a complete line parsed from the game.

I believe you, as the protagonist, at the very beginning of the game are revived by an smart alecky angel called Fanuel because you died.

I'm seconding Gunjou no Sora wo Koete, though it sounds like you're looking for something with gameplay which it does not have at all. It's a really excellent story though, about a military flight academy in the Kantou region (which has seceded from the rest of Japan, who are not happy), it's really a lot more about all the politics surrounding the conflict seen from the viewpoint of the academy students than the war itself.
