I actually like Rin's visual design more than Luvia's and think the ojou thing is outdated bullshit. I still prefer Luvia for one simple reason: I hate Rin, and Luvia is a bitch to Rin. If you want a character whoäs ready to put Rin in her place, your choices are very slim, it's either Luvia or that worthless slut Sakura in the one Bad End where she sentences Rin to infinite ultrarape (and frankly, I think that's a bit overkill for just having an annoying personality).

Just look at the Slutkura route ending where Sakura spills her life story and Rin basically goes "bitch, I don't give a shit what happened to you, I don't care about you or other people in general", almost with those exact words, with the narrator confirming that she's telling the truth. Rin isn't so much a bad character as she's just handled in a weird way. Everybody in the game except Issei likes her unconditionally, and Issei is depicted as being a completely irrational hater. That's generally how Mary Sues are handled - everybody loves them except the one token character who is just a big meanie poopyhead.

No, seriously, I checked and it doesn't say anything like that in that scene. It does say it about half the game ago near the Mind of Steel True End, but at the fake end it's just Rin going "fuck you, sister, I don't give a shit about you", narrator going "man she sure doesn't" and then stabbity-stab-stab and then "oh okay I guess I couldn't kill you after all" and a single dramatic tear.

What she said was that she simply didn't waste her time feeling sympathy regarding things that she cannot understand.
There is a difference between sympathy and caring for others.
Sympathy is about feeling and understand what someone else is feeling like "I feel your pain" and all that.
It is true no one really could understand what it would feel like for Sakura because she had lived a very extreme and unique life. Most people would probably try even if they can't, because it is usually what most people believe that they should do. Rin simply said that she doesn't bother trying because it would be pointless.
Caring for others is simply caring, it can be done without the understanding of someones feelings or life and she did say that she loved her sister.

The reason why she acted cold towards her all the time before that was simply because she was braught up and raised in a home were it was taboo even mentioning Sakura, that and because of all of the rules of the magi, which she clearly doesn't like and is also one of the reasons of why she was jealous of the fact that Kiritsugu disregarded those rules in order to be a true father.
