This is untrue, vis-a-vis food. You just have to know where to look. You DO know that ninety percent of the Mexican/Italian/Chinese food available in the States is heavily Americanized, right? To get authentic stuff, you usually have to get yourself to some area that has a high ethnic population (i.e. people of a certain ethnic background making ethnic food for other people of the same background). The same is true in Japan, but you have to search a bit harder.

I do contend, though, that Japanized Western food is really good -- you just have to approach it like you would Tex-Mex or 90% of the Chinese food you get in the States (that is to say, it can be good/satisfying, but is far from being authentic).
