I remember one floating around with the best 50 nakige of all time.
Though even though it said "nakige" it also had eroge like FSN or Phantom so it pretty much ranked every thing that had some emotional scenes in it.

If I remember correctly Sharin no Kuni was first, I'll try to find it.

My definitive reccomendation would be to play Fate/stay night followed immediately by Princess Waltz. Princess Waltz is the spiritual sequel and will give you a lot of closure.

Why the hell would Ever17, Saya, Umineko etc. not be good for "beginners"? All of these games require just as little from the player than the ones mentioned in the "good for beginners" list (in fact, I'd say Tsukihime is slightly more difficult than most of the "must see" titles")

If you're used to reading a lot anyway, a long, involved VN is fine to start with. There's really not much difference between reading a text on paper and reading text on a little screen with pictures and music.

For beginner reading games, I think it's better to suggest short games. That way, they can have a feel for it better. A sample.
