I was reading through the site linked in the OP and it led me to another (very low quality) site that had a few downloads for 3d printing your own masks. Has anyone had experience with making their own masks to print? I would assume most masks are made a different way since kig has been around longer than commercial 3d printers, but I have build up a little knowledge on making my own models from working with them a lot for VR.

I had a look at the mask maker list, and holy shit, I never know there’s that many chinese makers. But the most ridiculous thing is how they all look pretty much the same, are they using the same base or what.

This is easily the most frustrating thing about 3d printing and kig masks. It's a problem with the openkig site too. I have yet to see visual evidence of anyone 3d printing an anime girl head, everyone just skips past that crucial step to the rest of the outfit.
Can you make sections out of the anime face and glue them together? Do you need a fuckoff huge 3d printer to get the full head inside its printing zone? Which direction is the best orientation for the face to be facing? Do you need to add supports to the model so it prints right? Is there a back end shell to the head you should be doing as well? Which orientation does THAT need to be printed in?
So many questions left unanswered because every tutorial just skips over the "draw the rest of the fucking owl" step to the presumed fun part. I just wanna know if I can afford a 3d printer that can print anime girl heads or if I should just give up and buy a mask off of taobao.

I have an ender 3 so it's 220 x 220 x 250
all mask prints I made (3 1/2) were split in about 4 pieces then glued them together and used a dremel to friction weld the pieces together.

you have to prime the shell anyway since you want to get rid of the layers being visible so you might aswell add some epoxy on the inside to reinforce the shell (that's just my theory tho. haven't actually tried that yet)

I always heard that glue was a big no-no because the mask was liable to crack with big swings in temperature since the two halves of the bind would expand at different rates. Making an entire mask from one print sounds like a bad idea. Best method is to divide it up into two/four pieces, glue them together, sand/prime the shell and make a silicone mould. FRP is a much better material for a mask/helmet.

Oh, and not every 3D printer out there is the same so settings for each is usually different, it needs tinkering and massive prints like these would need similar levels of preparation. You don't expect to put in the model, press print and get a perfect shell outright.

Why else would you buy a 3D printer if not for tinkering around, if you want the best result out of it? If you want just OK quality, get a 3D printer, a decent roll of filament, download a slicer like Cura, work off of the built-in settings and hope that you won't be sleeping in a bed of waste filaments tonight.

If you want really good quality, like all things 3D printer, start by figuring how to print really good figurines and work from there.
