It's really not necessary to take your shoes off at home. The Japanese do it because their culture tell them to, and because they sit on the floor. We do not sit or sleep on the floor.

Unless you just walked through shit, you don't have to take your shoes off.

What part of America leaves there shoes on indoors?

I live in the northeast and I don't know anybody who does that. Myself, my friends and family, and every college roommate I've ever had has always taken shoes off when going inside a home.
