It's interesting that the conversation turned in this direction this morning. I just finished stringing together a fairly plausible (I think) theory regarding Kumasawa's identity as the original Beatrice, and how this leads to Shannon being the current one. It's almost done. Alright, lets begin.

First, some fun facts- if Shannon survives the first twilight, Eva and Hideyoshi always die. If she dies they both live (for a while at least). Also, if Shannon lives, Jessica always dies on the second twilight. Kanon's body always dissapears if Shannon survives.

Shannon is a strange exception to the rule that those hired by Kinzo be among 'the most promising graduates' from the Fukuin House. She was hired practically before she even started attending school. Age 6. Shannon is the one among all those that age who remember Battler's behavior best.

In regards to Episode 4, I've wracked my brain for some time trying to think of how Jessica, who I thought was the Beatrice Battler met on the balcony, could have killed herself. But then I turned things around and put Shannon in Jessica's place, and suddenly it became very easy.

Shannon had the only gun that was removed from Kinzo's study. After she killed everyone else and did a sloppy staking job, she dressed up as Beatrice and confronted Battler. His lolwut response was enough, and she sent Battler of to the chapel while she prepared to 'leave the game board'. She went back to the well where she killed Nanjo, and using a long rope and a heavy stone, tied the stone to the stock of the gun and lowered it down through the grate over the well. She then set the stake down next to herself, and once she shot herself in the head the stone dragged the gun down through the grate and into the well where Battler couldn't reach. Voila, a final magic crime to add to the ones she made everyone else tell Battler over the phone- 15 people shot to death and not a gun to be found.

All right, that stuff was mostly irrelevant, but I wanted to get a little supporting evidence on the table. So on to my theory. Now then, who among those still alive know the truth about Beatrice? Genji, Kumasawa, and Nanjo. The three of them have known Kinzo for decades, and were all trusted by him to look after Beatrice #2, who he was keeping in Kuwadorian. And yet, when questioned, all three will quibble about, admitting to only the most minimal knowledge and usually outright lying. See Episode 1 in particular. Why all the deception and doubletalk?

Let me make a statement here: The original Beatrice, who Kinzo met after the Great Kanto Earthquake, was Kumasawa. This has been hinted at pretty blatantly... Virgilia, the 'predecessor Beatrice' was manifested from Kumasawa. And she taught the current one, her 'apprentice', in the use of magic. So let's go back 60some years to the time just after the earthquake. Kinzo has been made head of the family by the few surviving elders, and was pushed into a political marriage so he could borrow some wealth/influence from his wife's family. Getting investors interested in him is hard though, since he doesn't have any real money or assets, so things seem pretty hopeless.

I don't care who's that, but she looks really cute. Even better than EVA I must say.

Then, by chance, he meets a clever and attractive woman his age, and falls for her. Kumasawa, who has said herself she was a looker back in the day. Kumasawa has her own circumstances, and might even be married herself, but the two of them start meeting when they can. As time goes on, Kinzo tells her about his difficulties, to which Kumasawa comes up with a devious solution- if the lenders won't give Kinzo any money because he doesn't have any collateral, he just has to fool them into thinking he does. Someone else theorized, and I liked the idea, that Kinzo in fact only was able to get a few gold ingots. He then purchased 10 tons of lead bars, painted them gold, and mixed in the couple real ingots. Kinzo's magic has always been based upon statistical miracles: When the president of Marusoo was invited to inspect the gold, with a combination of some subtle guidance from Kinzo and alot of luck, he took one of the real ingots back to test. Kinzo and Kumasawa's gamble worked, and lenders started to come forward.

As time goes on, Kinzo turns those loans into a massive fortune. He pays back his debts, expands his business, and even uses his connections with the GHQ to buy Rokkenjima. At some point though, the gold legend starts to become inconvenient. Lenders keep approaching him, and various orginizations want to buy it off him. Kumasawa's cleverness comes in handy again here- Kinzo discredits the existance of the gold by starting the rumor that he was a sorcerer, and he got the gold by summoning a witch and making a contract with her. People stop bugging him about the gold, and his reputation is probably tarnished, but it hardly matters at that point because he's fucking RICH.

At some point around the time Kinzo bought Rokkenjima, he and Kumasawa break off their affair (maybe). However, Kinzo hires Kumasawa onto his staff, along with a dapper fellow named Genji. It is here that the Beatrice legend really takes root on Rokkenjima. Kinzo, by chance, was visiting an orphanage when he found a young girl who bore an unlikely resemblance to the Beatrice he and Kumasawa invented, or maybe Kumasawa herself. Kinzo's into western fairy tales, and the idea of a hidden mansion in the forest, where a witch waits... the chance to indulge in such a fantasy is too much to pass up. Kinzo's set for life. He doesn't really need to do much more, so he needs a new hobby... With his connections, he has a second mansion secretly constructed at the same time as the main house, adopts the child, and has Genji and Kumasawa raise her. Nanjo is probably also brought in at this time to see to any of her medical needs. Kinzo starts collecting volumes of magic, which he studies in order to deepen his immersion in the fantasy he's created.

Things continue on like this for the next 15 or so years. As Beatrice gets older, she starts to wonder about the outside world, and about her own identity. One day, while noone was watching over her, Beatrice dissapeared from Kuwadorian. After a desperate search, she turns up dead at the bottom of a cliff. Kinzo is devastated, and thinks that she killed herself. At this time, his magical hobby gets a bit more serious. He starts serious research into a spell that can resurrect the dead. That same year, Battler and Jessica are born. 8 more years pass. Kinzo's research isn't getting anywhere.

And then, during a visit to the same orphanage that he found Beatrice in, he finds a child who shows the potential of becoming another Beatrice. Keeping the previous one isolated in order to keep her a secret backfired badly. So Kinzo decides to hide her in plain sight. Sayo is 'hired' by Kinzo, is made to take the name Shannon, and is brought in as an 'apprentice' maid. She still attends school normally, and while she is on duty Kumasawa instructs her in both housework, and in magic.

Shannon is fairly isolated. With Jessica the only person on the island her age, she doesn't have opportunity to make any friends. During the last few family conferences Battler attended he, by his own admission, started noticing Shannon more and paying attention to her. He said all sorts of crazy things back then, and although they probably didn't mean a whole lot to him, to someone as innocent and naive as Shannon, they probably meant alot. But then he forgot whatever he promised her, and left the family.

But I don't think this really conflicts with what we 'know' versus what has been told to us by Kinzo's servants.

That's a really good theory to think about, anon. I myself have thought Kumasawa was either Beatrice or Kinzo's wife for a while now, too.

I like that theory. The part about Kinzo's gold seems like it will definitely turn out to be true.

In regards to the stakings, I believe Nanjo and Genji share that duty. If all the servants are conspiring to carry out Kinzo's ceremony, it's possible all of them perform the stakings as circumstances permit.

In Episode 4, Genji is killed, and Nanjo is taken prisoner by someone who in previous games never had the chance to act on their own. One thing I do find strange however- whoever the killer is in Episode 4, they want, very badly, for Battler to believe in them as a witch, and in magic. Now here's the problem. Even though the instructions for the stakings are quite clear, and the killer wants Battler to believe they are the witch Beatrice, they don't carry out the stakings with much commitment.

If Shannon was the one who Battler saw on the balcony, after Battler shot down her hopes of him remembering his sin, she may have simply not cared. She finished up the stakings halfheartedly, by the end not even bothering to put the stake into Nanjo or herself, and killed herself as described in>>2902641
