It was an ordinary day at elementary school. A group of kids were playing at recess. These kids had a habit of playing with a purple plush doll, a dinosaur named Barney. Now, you might ask, “How much fun can they possibly have with a plush doll?” Well, the answer is quite simple. These kids use their collective imagination to pretend that Barney is alive. Now it just so happens that on this day, the first-graders were playing with Barney.

“All right kids, let’s sing another song!” Barney exclaimed. They then sang, “I love you, you love me, we’re as happy as can be. With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, won’t you say you love me too?”

“Barney’s so cool,” said one of the kids.

“Yes, children, I am your friend,” said Barney, “But you look so good!” he exclaimed, “I just want to eat you!”

As he lunged for them, hoping to get a tasty morsel, they screamed. They ran as far away from the Tyrannosaurus as possible. As Barney chased them, two ceratopsians appeared.

“Barney, why aw you twying to eat these kids?” asked the green ceratopsian, Baby Bop.

“Yeah,” said the yellow ceratopsian, BJ.

“Because,” answered Barney, “I am evil!”

He charged at Baby Bop. He was about to bite into her, when BJ stepped in the way. He started to bite BJ. BJ tried to gore Barney with his horns (he is a ceratopsian, after all.) Baby Bop also tried to gore Barney.

While this was going on, the kids were very scared. Suddenly, an adult appeared.

He was an African-American who wore black-rimmed glasses. He said to the kids, “Come with me now, for your own good.”

“But we were always told not to talk to strangers,” said one of the kids.

The kids realized their best chance of figuring out what was going on would be to follow this man, and they did, since they didn’t want to get eaten by Barney.

Adam answered, “Come on Michael, you know it’s me, Adam.”

“Just checking,” replied the voice.

The door opened for Adam and the kids.

“Where are we?” asked one of the kids.

“This is the headquarters of the Backyard Gang,” said Adam, “Michael, here are the new recruits. Want to show them around?”

“Okay,” Michael replied, “Come with me.”

Michael showed the group around the house. In the living room, there were three women. “Here are Luci, Tina, and Amy. They are the ones who track Barney’s whereabouts on computers.” In the next room, there were two African-American men. “These men are Jason and Derek. They are in charge of weapons.” Indeed, it showed. There were highly advanced weapons all over the room. “I am Michael, the leader, and the man that took you here is Adam, who is in charge of new recruits,” said Michael.

“Wait, what’s going on,” asked one of the kids, “How do you all know about Barney, and how can you see him?”

Michael had a grave look on his face. “I can tell you why,” he said in a serious tone. “It all started years ago, long before any of you were born. In the year 1987, all of us were your age. We were friends and six of us, Derek didn’t come till later, were called the Backyard Gang. But one day, we were searching around in my attic. (A.N.: From now on, words in italic will be words actually said by the characters in the past.)

“Hey Michael, what’s this?” said Luci. She had found a very old book in the attic.

Michael looked at the book and said, “I don’t know. What on earth is the occult?” The book had the words Book of the Occult on it. They opened it to a page in the middle.

“This gives instructions on how to make a friend,” Jason remarked.

“All right, let’s try it,” said Michael.

“Then, my sister Amy appeared.”

“Michael, what are you and your friends doing?” she asked.

“Go away,” said Michael.

“Hey, you can’t do that! I’m in the club too. I’ll tell mom if you don’t let me play!” she yelled.

“Fine, you can play,” said Michael. He noticed the purple plush doll Amy always carried around. “You know what, we might need Barney for our game.”

“We all placed our hands on Barney. Then, Luci said the magic words that were in the book. Suddenly, we were unable to move for a short time. We didn’t know it then, but part of our minds were being transferred into Barney.” Said Michael.

“So, you are trying to defeat Barney?” asked a kid.

“Yes,” said Michael. Then suddenly, he yelled, “Duck and cover!”

Barney had broken through the front door!

Barney was in the doorway of the headquarters of the Backyard Gang. He ran towards the kids and started biting them, and being a tyrannosaur, it hurt a lot.

“Grab your blasters!” Michael yelled.

The Backyard Gang took out their laser guns and aimed at Barney. This distracted him from the children, some of whom were already mortally injured. They would be mourned later.

Derek was holding a super powerful laser of his own design. He pointed at Barney’s heart and yelled, “Take this, you demon from hell!”

He fired. The resulting blast destroyed the house and seriously injured all involved. Except for Barney.

“Ha, did you fools really think you could defeat me with conventional weaponry? I am immortal, nothing you do can harm me, for I am a part of you! I was created out of your hatred for Sheryl Leach.”

The Backyard Gang was playing with their dinosaur friend, Barney. After creating him from a ritual they didn’t understand, he had become their best friend, they would always play with him.

“Barney, you’re the best,” said Tina.

“Why thank you,” Barney replied.

Inside the car, her two-year-old son, Patrick, was screaming at the top of his lungs. “All right, Patrick? Patrick, calm down. Patrick?” it was difficult for Sheryl to calm her son down. The only thing that worked was a children’s cassette tape.

This gave Sheryl an idea. Why not make her own video. All she needed was a set of characters. Then, she saw Barney and the Backyard Gang.

“This is a great set of characters,” she said. She pulled over.

At this point, the kids saw her coming closer. She said to them, “Hello, children. Is that a purple dinosaur?”

“Yes, it is,” Michael replied.

“Well, I was wondering if you could help me out,” Mrs. Leach continued, “My son has a hard time calming down. You and your dinosaur could be the perfect thing to hold his attention. I am asking if you kids, and your dinosaur, could be the cast of a TV show I want to make. I do work for a TV company.”

This was something the kids didn’t want to pass up. They accepted the terms, and Barney and the Backyard Gang became a TV show. But, it was not the way the kids imagined it at all. They were forced to do degrading and infantile theatrics to please the two-year-olds watching the show.

“I don’t believe this,” said Michael, “We’re not little kids. What does Mrs. Leach take us for? Now, everyone in school makes fun of us for being on a baby show!”

“I know,” said Luci, “This show isn’t even interesting. I’m going to speak to Mrs. Leach and complain.

At Lyons Co., Luci and Michael presented their case. To appease them, it was agreed that they would star in a live performance. In this, they created Baby Bop and later BJ. But as their hatred for Mrs. Leach grew, the more evil Barney became.

After the concert, when the Backyard Gang created Baby Bop and BJ by their own power, (no help from the occult, this time) they kept a low profile. They remained on the show until about 1993, when most of them left to keep an eye on Barney, and on the show they were replaced with children ignorant of Barney’s origin. By 1996, all of the Backyard Gang had left the show.

Barney had killed off all of the kids, and only the Backyard Gang, his creators, were still alive. He destroyed the headquarters and said, “Bow down to me, or your fate will be the same as those children’s!”

Michael, angry at the destruction that they indirectly caused, yelled out, “Barney, I’ll never worship you! You’re dead to me, as dead as everyone you’ve killed!”

Suddenly Barney shrieked in pain. Apparently what Michael said actually damaged him mentally.

“Of course,” said Adam, “Barney was a product of our imagination. If we mentally wish him dead, he will die.” Then, Adam wished Barney dead.

However, there were still four more members of the Backyard Gang. (Derek was recruited at a later date.) Barney was still alive, but weakened.

“How dare you try to kill me,” he said, “You will pay for that!” He was seething with rage, and breathed a stream of very hot fire on the Backyard Gang. Just as it was about to hit, Barney started writhing in pain. He was on the ground, having convulsions, and an onlooker might think he was having an epileptic seizure.

“Barney can’t destroy us!” said Amy, “We created him, remember? Now’s our chance to defeat him once and for all!”

Everyone concentrated their mental energy on the death of Barney. After his convulsions reached a peak, Barney’s body went limp. He had turned back into a harmless plush doll.

Amy picked up the doll which had once been Barney.

“This doll must be destroyed,” she said, and tossed it into a furnace when they left HQ and went into the school. As they all watched the cremation, a woman whom they had met before approached them.

“I am sorry about what I have done. We at Lyons Co. received word of what Barney had done, and why. I am sorry that we caused it,” she said. She was Sheryl Leach.

“Well, it’s over now,” said Michael, “Barney is gone for good.”

Mari rolls her eyes and says in a sarcastic voice: "If flowers live to be thirty two thousand years old."

"If flowers lived that long they would grow higher than one hundred and fifty centimeters!"

"Ladies, ladies. You're making me sad that two beautiful and stunning women can't see each other's beauty."

Both clients turn up their noses at each other.

"I bet I know something that can turn this around. Yuko-chan, you like Bloody Marys, right?" Makoto does a cutesy head tilt at the end of the sentence so her ponytail would bounce.

"Yeah, yeah."

"And, Mari-san, you like Manhattans, right?"

Mari nods.

"And, you both like fruit tarts, right? Well, after a couple of drinks we'll all be the same age, the same height and we'll all be happy."

Yuko squeezes Makoto's arm. "Is being happy too much to ask for?"
