This case isn't as bad as Arcueid Brunestud since at least Edelfelt is an actual Finnish upper-class family name, but still... "Luviagelita"?

If I wrote a VN set in Japan (Katawa Shoujo lol) I wouldn't name characters Ching Chong Wong or even Mitsubishi Honda. I'd do the five minutes of google work it takes to find an actual Japanese name that sounds nice to my ear.

Aggelita is quite similar to how angel is pronounced/written in Greek.
Αγγελος(which means angel) would be pronounced 'aggelos'. And 'ita' is a female suffix in general.

The official Romanization says it's "luviagelita, one word.

If it's split in two, there's two obvious ways to split it:

Luvia: A small coastal town in south east Finland
Gelita: Nothing (A german lube company)

Luvi: Nothing
Agelita: A bastardization of Aggelita, as above.

The sanest interpretation out of all this I can cobble up is that it's a mashup of the two of the above words that actually mean something ("Luvia + Aggelita") and maybe is what Nasu thought would mean "Luvia's Angel" or something to that effect. Maybe. Still not a real name though.

Most probably he just picked syllables out of a hat until he got something he liked the sound of.

Frankly I'm surprised to hear that Edelfelt's a real name. That already shows more research than what he's known for.

Luviagelita sounds like something that might be rather complex and perhaps even posturing to the, uh, non-western ear, and there's plenty of expressions in the Japanese language that come to form through the image given by the sound or feel of an expression rather than anything else. Which is propably true for most other languages as well, yes, but still...

You have a point in that making things interesting or pleasant is often more important than making them right or correct. Especially if you're an artist trying to make a buck with quasi-pornographic e-books, that's when all accuracy can well be thrown out of the window if it gets you even one more fan.

Hell, the very _concept_ of Luvia is itself a huge factual inaccuracy, you'd be hard pressed to find anybody remotely like her in in post-19th-century Finland. But it would be just churlish to tell Nasu to scrap the whole character because it's unrealistic. So of course we've got to let some of these things slide. "Edelfelt" already sends a message that he did _some_ amount of research and established _some_ connection to reality and I guess it's a fair cop that we should be happy with that.

But on a counterpoint: Arcade Bumstead. Some of the made-something-up-didn't-bother-to-check things Nasu does just can't be excused.

Well, most of them revolve around arc which is a word that has a few different uses and phonetically, the second part of her name sounds like 'aid'. Also, tracing to Latin and Greek routs and pronunciation, the name is oddly similat to 'αρχη'=beggining or start, or αρκεί=(it's enough or will suffice) which could refer to her life where just killing enemis is what her life has to amount to and nothing else is needed.
