My guess is Takano won't be the culprit in the new anime. She'll get killed for real by someone else. In the interview, Ryuukishi said we should consider this a new Higurashi, its own series. Which probably means the layout of the figurative gameboard will change. We've already seen plenty of differences in this:

-The OP shows off the characters' weapons up close and then on their hands, including Mion's gun. This could mean the gun is real this time around and she carries it in self-defense. Or maybe she will steal a real one from a Sonozaki mafioso and do something horrible with it.

-The bear in the ED is too small to be the one Satoshi bought, which was massive, and it seems it's sitting somewhere in Satoko's house and she owns it. This could mean many things changed and Satoshi could've bought a smaller one, carried it to the house easily and used the rest of the money to escape from the police.

-If Takano is not the culprit, it can mean several things. Maybe "Nomura" was Featherine's human form in Higurashi much like Ikuko was in Umineko (neither of her avatars realize they are a witch while in that state). They look very similar. If she's the one causing this mess, she might have changed plans and NOT have Nomura approach Takano to plan the massacre.

-It's also possible that this is a world where Hifumi simply died of old age instead of committing suicide. I believe that shocking death is what REALLY traumatized Takano and made her willing to even participate in a massacre to make up for his sad demise. That trauma wouldn't exist here to push her over the edge. Or maybe Koizumi didn't die yet and she still has the backing of Tokyo in 1983, so everything is going fine. No reason for a suspicious deep state agent to sweet talk her into genocide either.

-There are other strange things in the anime that make me suspicious. Mion shipping Rena and K1 at the festival is typical of her because she doesn't think she's good enough for him. But she seemed serious about it, so she could actually be Shion. She also called Satoko a burden, which is a joke I don't remember Mion making at any point, and sounds pretty mean-spirited. Is she Shion pretending to be Mion while her sister does something with that gun during the festival, similar to how Keiichi killed Teppei?

-There is a part where Rena is lost in thought in the middle of class for no reason, which reminds me of Tsumihoroboshi. The scene switches to the calendar, we see rain clouds, and it switches to the next day, implying we skipped a whole day in which it rained. Then Keiichi finds Rena at the dump site and she freaks out when she sees him. Could it be that Rena killed Mamiya Rina on that rainy day and was trying to do something with the corpse the next day, but then K1 appeared before she could get to the body and she pretended to be looking for Kenta-kun? It would also explain her weird scene in class, she was worrying about the situation with Rina and accidentally killed her later that day.

-Rika acts more like a naughty preteen during the first episode and pulls some mean tricks on Satoko. This is how Hanyuu described her original personality in a Minagoroshi TIP: a mischievous girl. It could mean Rika is her normal self in the first episode and she's possessed by "our Rika" at the start of the second episode in the garbage dump scene. From this point onwards she acts like her usual "overly innocent" fake persona that we are familiar with. The Rika in the first episode seemed genuinely like a kid in a way that "our Rika" has forgotten how to imitate. Hell, we literally see her entering this fragment in the dump scene with red eyes and shit, implying she wasn't in this world yet before that scene.

-It's possible that Satoshi is alive somewhere (already explained the different bear) and the Sonozakis are hiding him from the police. If this is the case, it could change things regarding the identity of the Mion at the festival.

Hear me out. Mion states in the VN that she LIKED Satoshi too, even before Shion. If my theory is true and the smaller bear means Satoshi's fate is different this time, it's possible Mion is helping hide him. This explains why she ships Rena with K1 unironically, as she never lost her original crush and therefore isn't interested in Keiichi. This also explains why she carries a real gun. She's paranoid about the police finding Satoshi's hiding place.

If all of this is correct, it's possible that MION will be a killer for the first time in this anime. Ooishi has all the evidence necessary to convict Satoshi and Mion will shoot him dead in a fit of paranoia, believing he figured out where he's hiding. This leads to Keiichi freaking out because the detective who spoke to him about the Oyashiro curse suddenly appeared dead/vanished overnight.

Keiichi will suspect Rena and Mion like in Onikakushi, becoming paranoid, but the twist is that both of them are ACTUALLY culprits responsible for the deaths of Rina and Ooishi.

But I do think Takano being a real victim could be interesting. Like imagine for example that in this new fragment Takano claws her throat out and Tomitake gets burnt (meaning he would theoretically be the culprit), Ooishi would go to Keiichi and tell him about this, so he would know, but Rika would just assume everything is like last time, so she wouldn't even KNOW that the causes of death were switched cus she wouldn't bother looking for info on it. In a way it could be a meta commentary, we the viewers also assumed everything was the same, so the sudden changes caught us completely off guard. Just like Rika will get caught off guard when Toujitake turns off his disguise and starts manipulating the fabric of the simulation reality with his mind keyboard... theoretically I mean.

Someone compared the timelines between Onidamashi and Tsumihoroboshi and it's pretty interesting. The day Rena found out about Teppei and Rina, she felt sick in Onidamashi, and the day she was supposed to commit the murders in Tsumihoroboshi, it rained.

-Maria's intentionally autistic facial expressions that are even described that way in the text.

-Ange's lost child vibe that you could appreciate on her face under all that edge. The console versions made her look like a genuinely self-sufficient stuck up bitch, which was never the intention of Ryuukishi. She's an immature angsty teenager who is basically still a child deep down because of her upbringing. The console sprite doesn't show that part at all.

Do I have to explain the whole thing again? Teppei, the one who canonically molests her in Arc 3, doesn't like brats. K1, his dad, Irie and possibly Rena are pedo as hell, but Teppei is not. He decides to molest her when he meets Satoko after a year and notices how she's changed. This is all explained in Minagoroshi.

Also, her precocious tits were a hint about her family situation and the fact that she didn't have a stable father figure. It was intentional and kind of important. So important that Ryuukishi showed us her naked tits with zero clothes on to make sure we didn't mistake them for a fold on her shirt or something. Of course, that nudity had many other narrative and thematic purposes, but that was one of them.

Making her flat removes foreshadowing, makes her less interesting as a character and creates an inconsistency in Teppei's character.

It's not that force. Ryuukishi probably intended for people to make these theories, otherwise there would be contradictions somewhere. But it all fits perfectly, including the ages and everything.

If Ryuukishi simply wanted cheap references, he would've said it straight up. But instead he referred to Hinamizawa as "a village between Gifu and Toyama" without saying the name, to make people look it up on Google Maps and reward them for their curiosity with the plausible idea of this character being in Higurashi as Natsumi's mother. He also waited until the very last credits to reveal most of their original names and drop the Tanashi Miyoko bomb.

Ryuukishi likes to throw obscure details in, like Mion's gun that makes perfect sense when you think about it but wasn't understood by even the Alchemist staff. He likes to reward readers for making connections and discovering these obscure links between his stories.

It's not like a dead WW2 era young girl and a random housewife with a couple of lines matter in Higurashi, but it's interesting to think about, is most likely intentional because it all fits so well and it's a theme Ryuukishi clearly enjoys. The same person becoming a completely different individual in an alternate reality.

It just think it's neat to discover these things and appreciate them, because most readers never even notice.

Saikoroshi is the perfect epilogue for Higurashi. It makes everything that came before even more meaningful. The hospital scene with Rika preparing to visit her parents' graves is a perfect ending for the series and the most thematically fitting, considering the importance of Hanyuu's character and how she was killed by her daughter. Speaking of theories and Higanbana, I believe Michiru is the little girl Keiichi shot in the eye.

The incident happened a year before Keiichi moves to Hinamizawa and she was described as a small girl in the early grades of elementary school. Higanbana takes place before Umineko because Rosa's company is still in business (coincidentally, Michiru wears Anti-Rosa clothes because her parents like that brand). If Michiru is 10, she could totally be the same girl. It would mean Higanbana happens in 1985 or the first half of 1986.

Her profile describes her as an edgy chuuni that keeps wearing her eyepatch even though her eye injury healed long ago. And indeed, Keiichi's victim eventually healed with no after-effects as we learned in Tsumihoroboshi.

Just like the Meryl and Nina theories, this one fits too well, the timeline fits, and the eye injury thing is CLEARLY an intentional reference to his most famous work, something that Ryuukishi couldn't have done accidentally. It's almost like he did this on purpose to reward hardcore fans looking for connections, and made sure that it could be theorized about without the timeline or some other detail getting in the way. It's done on purpose.

Of course, I'm not saying Umineko happens in the Higurashi universe. I'm only using the timeline of both stories to guess when Higanbana could take place. If Ryuukishi did this on purpose, he would obviously make it so Keiichi's incident and Rosa's company serve to pin down the year Higanbana happens in and point us towards this character. He can do this for the writer without necessarily implying Higurashi and Umineko happen in the same world.

Now that I think about it, it's not that far-fetched to think they happen in the same world. Remember Akihito, the man who cucked Rena's dad? Let's look at his appearances in Higurashi and Umineko:

-Rena's parents worked in the clothing industry, but the mother had more talent as a designer. She convinced her husband to leave the village and move to Ibaraki so she could join a fashion company (maybe Rosa's? The timeframe fits perfectly, can't be coincidence). She started hanging out with this Akihito guy at the company and eventually cheated on her husband. Rena blamed herself for not rejecting the guy the first day her mother introduced him to her, which caused her whole mental debacle.

-In Umineko Tsubasa, we learn that Rosa's boyfriend is a guy named Akihito who works at her company. This implies he eventually dumped Rena's mother like the playboy he is and pursued the company president, Rosa. Just like in Rena's case, this is a man named Akihito dating Maria's mother and is also the reason of her misery, because Rosa leaves her alone to go out with him. He could be either one of her boyfriends or THE boyfriend we saw during the main story, who was cheating on his wife with Rosa and she called him out on it. Whether both boyfriends are the same or not, either of them fits.

So we have this attractive guy named "Akihito" showing up in both series. Dating the autistic orange-haired character's mother in both series. Working at a design company in both series. A company that could easily be the same timeline-wise, as if Ryuukishi made sure there were no contradictions in case someone found this out. The dude is the main source of the autistic orange-haired girl's misery in both series. And if we assume Akihito from Tsubasa and Rosa's unnamed boyfriend in the EP4 flashback are the same dude, the timeline makes even more sense because the guy is now married. Satoko does react to the paranoid thoughts but, as Irie explains, she's good at ignoring them while they accumulate until they explode suddenly. She doesn't slowly lose her mind like Keiichi. She acts normal but her brain is already conditioned to believe insane suspicions at the drop of a hat if something triggers her fears. And yes, unlike Rena, she does have reasons to listen to the paranoid thoughts and lose herself in that madness. She could suspect her uncle is coming back and convince herself of it because she saw a random motorcycle heading to town. That kind of stuff.

Shion also listens to the paranoid thoughts, but it's more that she convinces herself that the Sonozakis are murdering dissenting villagers and believes every single one of her own suspicions.

Rena reacts to both the itchiness AND the paranoid thougts in Tsumihoroboshi, when she starts believing in the aliens, small inconsistencies make her thing Mion sold her out to the police, etc. But that has nothing to do with her Ibaraki incident, where she was simply a normal student without any reason to fear or be paranoid. She just had massive family problems and believed in a literal demonic curse due to the itchiness and the maggot delusions, which caused her to snap at the middle school molesters in an outrageous and disproportionate way.

I agree. Hifumi himself explained how it works several times. Triggering the disease doesn't make you "paranoid" over nothing, it just makes you susceptible to fall into a spiral of suspicion if you have plausible reasons to believe in a threat.
