Finally made some 'follow me' custom eyes for my choo slut. Never wanted to pay for them, but apparently you can make them with 20mm Cabochons pretty easily and cheaply. I went a little smaller on the iris just to make the effect a little more noticeable and slightly disconcerting for anyone that doesn't like dolls watching them. The glare on the glass eyes makes me think I'll change them out for normal eyes later, but for now I like them. What do yall think?

I think the best resource I could find after seeing someone mention that you could do it on a forum was a yt video called "DIY Smart Doll Follow Me Eyes". Cabochons alone are pretty cheap so I bought a pack of 10 initially and I'm glad I did. I fucked up one set buy using a glue that didn't dry clear, second set with epoxy that changed the color of the paper so the whites were a gray. I just found a set of Irises off google, but more artistically inclined people than myself could make whatever eye they want.

Bonus pic is the look I get when turning around in my computer chair. My SMD now reminds me of that custom Miku(how do I not have a photo of that doll saved somewhere for comparison) anytime she's "looking" down and I kinda like that.

Oh that's fantastic, thank you anon! I'm going to try making some eyes, too.

>>27383054
A lot of artist dolls are either 3D printed entirely or 3D printed to make a mold for resin casting, and other people have made dolls that way. (There are also things like the 3D Printed Braq dragon that everyone and their mothers sell on Etsy.) I think it's worth a shot, anon! show us the outcome, whatever you do.

>> No.27383985

>>27383054
3D printing is how Danny Choo used to do prototypes back in the day, and they always looked presentable. The key is the after work (sanding etc.). If you do your own DIY model you'll still be welcome in most doll forums, but if you copy from existing dolls you'll be into "recast" (copies of dolls made by companies) territory, and almost the entire community hates recasts.

If I were to make my own model(which I have access to a bunch of 3d models for things like mmd) I would need to know how to print the ball joints. Is there a specific style I should go for? Schematics maybe?

>>27386111
I legit don't even know how to string them(if that is the only way to do it idk) and the joints look weird. It would be super great if someone could help me understand the actual technicalities of BJDs and how they are assembled.

>> No.27391266

>>27386111
>>27389827
This isn't the best place for strung ball joint dolls. This thread is mostly for the vinyl side of the hobby, which has an internal skeleton, so the joints are hinged. which isn't what you would need. I'm not sure of the temperament of Den of Angels about 3D printing, but you may want to poke around there and there was a guy on the Reddit BJD forum that 3D printed his own not too long ago. Maybe see about asking in those threads for pointers. Good luck!

We have someone who posts here sometimes who has printed and sculpted dolls before (caterpillar doll WIP anon) and they might be able to help? But this is true -- this is generally the vinyl thread, and the Resin thread is in /toy/. Resin folks are welcome here, especially with dolls like 2D/Aimerai who have an anime aesthetic as well, of course -- especially since their home thread has been dead for ages now.

r/bjd probably knows more about this though like the other anon said, and there might be videos on youtube about it? I wish I could help more, anon. Good luck!

>> No.27392090

>>27391367
Ah thanks a bunch for the info, I really have no idea what I'm getting myself into lol. I might try to copy some joints that I found online and build my own model onto of the frame. This seems pretty ambitious and, though I haven't done anything yet, I'm kinda getting cold feet haha.

Though, find these dolls soo soo cute and want to have one! Might have to wait until the covid stuff gets over with(if ever) when I can actually get a job. :/ Are there any places that these dolls go for cheaper prices(that aren't recast and aren't really bad quality?)

Is making clothes for BJDs hard? I want to learn how to sew, and I feel this would be a good way to practice at least, but idk maybe a bit challenging for newbies. Is it common for people to make their own clothes for the BJDs?

>> No.27392234

>>27391367
Resin thread is dead, lol.
>>27389827
So the typical stringing involves two loops of string that go to the head; one loop goes to each hand, and the other loop goes to each leg. The hands/feet usually have an S hook to hook onto both the hand/foot and the string, and another S hook fit in the head(typically turned to the side after being put in so it doesn't fall off).

Also, the ball joints are pretty self explanatory: they're ball of socket joints, for the most part, with one side being a ball and the other a socket. Exceptions to this tend to be knee and elbow joints, which are often a sort of double-ball or "peanut" joint, that allow for a full bend.

Really, the best way to get familiar with them is probably going to be handling one. Den of Angels has a thread with a list of dolls under $300, which would probably be a good starting point.

>> No.27392667

>>27392090
There are definitely some lower-priced dolls out there. There's the secondhand market, but there are also lists of (mostly resin) creators who have lower prices that I'll link below. For anime-style dolls, Parabox (Obitsu)'s dolls are definitely an affordable option!

For resin (strung BJDs) there's always Resinsoul, Angel of Dream, and some of the Asleep Eidolon dolls come to mind. A safe place to look for dolls and find out what you like would be ACBJD (alice's collections) -- they sell dolls for a lot of companies and have a lot you can compare. Into the Deep Dolls on Etsy has some cheap fantasy/animal dolls fi you don't mind waiting -- a lot of dolls are either pre-ordered or made to order, so you'll have to wait for a while on top of the world shipping situation.

Sewing clothes can be harder because everything you have to do is done on a smaller scale, but if you're familiar with it, you'll pick it up -- and even if you aren't, you will still pick it up in time. Don't worry so much about failing anon, just do something if you think it's fun. You are absolutely going to suck and fuck up at first, but that's just how we learn as people. We're in the middle of a world-wide clusterfuck, so might as well have some fun, right? A lot of hobbyists wind up getting dolls for various reasons, whether it's for making clothes, taking photos, or just the fun of having them around. Do what makes you happy.

Manmo 50bakunyuu by @yamashim on a DDP. I highly recommend them. Pic related top and that hoodie were both for MDD but fit alright. As long as it's stretchy or baggy, you shouldn't have a problem, but the look won't be the same. You can also just put on one size up clothing.
