So, I know there's a lot of elitist composerfags here on /jp/, but while all of you are off using your fancy "professional" programs, the rest of us casual composerfags are off kicking ass and taking names with KeyBored.

>>>/rs/keybored

Anybody made any songs using this yet? I've been screwing around with it for about 2 hours now. Shit's addictive.

I decided to upload ALL of my songs. Quality varies from 'wtf is this shit' to 'hey, this isn't bad' (or, if you actually like my music, it can go all the way up to 'this is awesome').
If you sort it by 'last modified' date, you can see how my music's changed over the course of time.

In case you want to edit my songs, or just want crappy reference material, you can also download the FLP (FL Studio project) files for most of the songs and a lot of unreleased songs here: http://www.mediafire.com/?rqykjgymnim

Songs included in the MP3 package that are /jp/-related:
Cold Earth (Remix of a song from the obscure NES game 1999: Hore, Mitakotoka! Seikimatsu)
Crimsoness - Split the Earth (Rearranged midirip from Crimsoness)
Crystallized Silver (Touhou rearrangement)
Eight Murders (Higurashi rearrangement)
Infinite Rage - Crimsoness (Crappy Crimsoness rearrangement)
Karma (I don't need to explain this one, do I?)
Moonshine (Rearrangement of a track from Moonshine)
Sono me dare no me (remix) (Remix of voice samples from Chaos;Head)

That's what VSTs are for. You have a program to create music in (FL Studio, Cubase, etc), which comes with a set of 'instruments' (VSTs), and then you download additional instruments.

So yes. Every modern music making program can have high quality synth instruments, you just need to download them and put them in your VST folder.

Honestly, I haven't gotten to it yet either, heh. But I was listening to the soundtrack, and there's really a number of simple, but nice pieces. Also, many of them have the same feel to it, which gave me the idea for the mashup in the first place.

Anyways, I've started on the mix - it's kind of jumbled and abrupt at parts, and I should probably fix some areas by manually resequencing it (went too happy with the loops this time lol), but overall it's not too bad, I think.

Parts of it sound really time stretched though. I can't tell if you're actually using time stretched samples or if it's just a result of some of the delay-type effects you used, but if it's because of the effects I'd turn them down a bit if I was you to make the mix sound cleaner.

Just my opinion tho

>> No.2624414

>>2624366
Yeah, some samples were definitely stretched out, and combined with tons of pitch shifting, pretty much shits up the quality. I was just felt doing it all with samples today to sketch it out, but I'll probably replace some of the parts with synth'ed stuff, and add some better transitions and such. Glad you liked it so far though.

Hey, I have a question.

I'm >>2624366, I downloaded your song the other day, like I said I think it's pretty cool. But something was bugging me about it and I realized what it was. I have an ear for samples, and I could swear I'd heard the drum loop in the beginning before, and I figured out where I'd heard it. It's used in a BGM from Persona 2 called "幻想" ("Gensou"). I may have heard it in other songs too, not sure though.

I'm just curious where you got it, since it must be the same sample source that the people who made the Persona 2 BGM used and I'm a sample nerd so I like knowing where shit came from. I feel like this loop might be a time-stretched/processed version of the often heard "synthetic substitution" loop, so I played around with that loop for a bit but I couldn't get it to sound exactly right so I'm not sure. Either way, the Persona 2 BGM drums and the drums in your song are IMO far too similar to just be a result of the same kind of EQing and processing, they've got to be the same pre-processed drumloop.

Anyway, here's the Persona 2 song if you're interested. The drums in question come in around 0:23.

>>2633345
That's pretty much unplayable, because of the ridiculous spacing between notes. The largest interval most pianists can play in one hand is a 9th, and even that's difficult with notes in between. The general rule for piano writing is that you want intervals to be an octave or smaller, unless there's space for the pianist to roll the chord. However, this can be fixed easily by removing double voicings, which there are shitload of.

>> No.2633371

>>2633368
9th? Shouldn't it be tenth? Lots of piano literature has 10ths in one hand.

>> No.2633372

>>2633368
Also, I should add that if you're going to voice all of the notes in a chord, there's (usually) absolutely no reason to double any of them, and just results in a headache for whoever has to play this.

>> No.2633380

>>2633371
Yes, there is. However, in those cases, it's usually expected that the chord be rolled. The only piano literature where you're going to see tenths everywhere is in really difficult stuff for virtuosos.

>> No.2633381

>>2633361
>>2633368
Yeah, I had roughly planned the hand spacing out before doing this transposing down; annoyingly the whole question was flawed as the reading of it is voided due to the transposition. The right hand was supposed to be 2 octaves higher, to compliment this marimba and xylophone part. Thanks though, and I'll keep that 9th limit in mind.

I think you exaggerate a bit - a person with normal sized hands should be able to just hit most tenths, and can probably comfortably add in the fifth too if it's not going by quickly.

>>2633381
Other than that errant chord, though, I think all of your intervals are no more than a 9th for one hand. And for that chord, you can try bumping the G down an octave and the Eb up an octave if the slight change in texture doesn't bother you much.

>> No.2633453

Ok, so let me just make sure we mean the same thing - by 10th you mean in major or minor third plus an octave, right? I have fairly large hands as well and I can barely reach the white key only perfect 11th's.

>> No.2633533

>>2633470
Yeah, that's what I meant. You probably just have really big hands. I'm currently preparing an audition for the conservatory right now, and the only time I've encountered large amounts of 10ths that were required to be quickly played were in pieces by people like Rachmaninoff and Ravel, who are notorious dicks to pianists. I'm not really adverse to large intervals as most of the time I have enough space to quickly roll them, but when they're in the middle of a bunch of consecutive chords, they can be a bitch to play. Either way, the piece would be pretty much the same and would be much easier to play with more practical voice leading.

So I actually tried messing around with these some, with mixed results but yeah...

KeyBored is pretty cool in that it has like a 4 octave range and you can easily traverse through them as they are mapped diagonally (ie, 1, q, a, and z are all octave equivalents). It's also kind of fun in the way that it registers all keystrokes even if the program is not in focus - you can be typing up a report or something and it'll still knock out funky notes. Sucky part is the way it handles accidentals, which require you to press shift for sharping the note. This makes it extremely annoying to play (fast) passages that switch back and forth from the sharp and natural version of a note. Also, there's this website (http://keybored.wikidot.com/system:keybored-songs)) that has a list of the melodies of numerous songs in KeyBored notation, but you pretty much need to know song well as the notation it doesn't portray rhythm.

Click Musical Keys takes the more sensible approach in putting it's black keys on every other row, though of course this cuts down on the range to about two octaves. Plays more intuitively but for some the octaves don't map smoothly like they do with KeyBored - each row extends to the 11th or something. This of course makes chords using both rows a good deal more awkward. Also, there is no option to skip octaves like in Garageband or Logic.

If only there was another program that combined the strengths of these two..

Oh, and both have the option to use all 127 patches from your GM synth bank (no drumkits though), but unfortunately can't be used as a DXi/VSTi/AU/RTAS host for plugins.
