It's not useless at all. The key is to learn both, though, rather than just one.

Yes, some kanji are only used in the context of a compound, but don't expect that you'll only ever see kanji used properly - good luck with anything by Nasu, for example.

Kanji can be pronounced lots of ways, kana only what they are.

There are thousands of kanji as they're logograms, and kana are a form of alphabet.

Kanji sometimes exacerbates the problem with heteronyms, though. For example:

こんにちは = 今日は = Hello
きょうは = 今日は = Today

You can tell them apart when they are spoken or written in kana, but with kanji you have to rely on context.
