Patchouli desires to sell some books she no longer wants. She takes inventory of what she does not want and appraises them at $5 per book. Patchouli will use that selling price for any book she acquires. She is willing to sell 60,000 books and adds them to her inventory. She begins operations on January 1st and manages to sell 20,000 books. However Patchouli purchases some books from Kourindou with the intention of selling them. On January 5th she buys 4,000 books @ $3 per book. On January 20th she buys another 10,000 books @ $20 per book. Assuming Patchouli uses the periodic LIFO inventory system, what is her cost of good sold?

LIFO isn't GAAP, so no.
She should be using FIFO or average weighted.

Not all books have standard costing.

Assume Patchouli is acting as a sole trader.

Previous long-term inventory should be valued @ historic cost, but since we don't have that we'll assume the $5 for the 60,000 books is accurate.

Assume Patchouli sells books at $5, add 100,000 to cash in hand.
...Actually the question is unsolvable without the price of the books sold as well as the time in which the 100,000 was sold. I'd try averaging it out, but there's no end point to the financial period, so I can't even do that. Ah well.

Alot of hard work. But you get alot of time to yourself. Long hours during tax season. So so hours during off season. If you are working tax department you'll never have to speak to anyone if you don't want to. You might get one or two managers that want to "synergize" the company and get everyone working together but they'll give up on the tax department/accounting department when they realize how antisocial we are.

You're really assuming she sold 20,000 in five days? That's a pretty damn big assumption.

Assuming she sold the books at the end of the period, CoG would be £242,000. Though LIFO is disallowed where I'm from.

Well, OP wouldn't have specified LIFO if it didn't have SOMETHING to do with selling it.

I forget, if you inherit stuff and it's later appraised at a certain value, does Cost of Sales count as nil or at the appraised price?

Also fuck money laundering regulations.

>> No.2594601

The cost of which it was originally acquired.

>> No.2594610

OP said periodic LIFO so it wouldn't matter if she sells anything before or after purchases.

She sells 20,000 so the purchased layers of 10,000 for 20 bucks per book and 4,000 for 3 bucks per book would be eaten into. Then 6000 would be eaten from her beginning inventory.

>> No.2594626

books isn't only merchandise to patchouli, main point of her purchases is new reading material, the resales are just a side effect of her hobby
