Even a series as successful as Umineko couldn't afford several dozen lines spoken in Italian and English. They had Nazitrice and the Italians speaking Japanese. So fucking jarring, it takes you out of the story. That's one of the reasons I don't recommend voices.

This. It's not just mysteries, it happens with any story even if they are straightforward narratives with no mystery. Stories are written in such a way that your mind tries to anticipate what will happen or make sense of what you read by filling in the details with your imagination. A lot of lines of narration and dialog are dedicated to this. If you already know every detail beforehand, you won't have the intended experience. You'll be reading what is technically there, written on the page, but many other things the that are also "there" (like something a certain line would make you imagine) would fly right past your head. You wouldn't imagine it, even though it was the author's intention, because you already know the details beforehand. You are literally missing out on part of the story.

When I reread a story and reach those parts, I immediately remember all the things I imagined the first time, even though I already know they turn out to not be that way. Rereading and going in spoiled the first time are completely different things, because in the latter case you are missing out on half of the experience.

I have a similar problem with people who think "prequels" are not sequels. The are literally sequels that just happen to take place before, they are not meant to be experience first. Also, the original work is not a "prequel" to its sequels either. Prequels by their very nature are sequels, so the original work can't be a prequel.

If you read Higurashi without having much prior information, you share Keiichi's "cone of vision" so you're susceptible to the same paranoid explanations he comes up with. You'll question the sanity and good-will of the characters, the politics of the village, the existence of Oyashiro-sama, you'll doubt everything, while at the same time not even considering that most of the conflicts might be resolved if Keiichi just communicated better.

So in order to prove my earlier thesis that the original Ryukishi Higurashi art is actually pretty nice if only somebody were to fix the shading and the weird gradient colors, I decided to experiment a little bit. Here's my initial attempt to transfer the PS2 coloring and shading to Ryukishi's Rika sprite. Sadly, I discovered that I kinda suck at sprite editing.

Anyway, since it took me forever to finish that, and the end result leaves much to be desired, I thought there had to be a more scalable method. So my thoughts went to machine learning. Initially I tried neural style transfer, but the results made everything really blurry. After some more searching though, I managed to find a nice neural color transfer library. Here's Mion with the PS2 coloring, upscaled with waifu2x.

I tried that, but it doesn't really work because the issue with the Umineko sprites isn't really with the coloring. To get them to Ciconia levels you'd really need a professional like Remotaro to re-shade them, so I'd have to improve a lot to even begin to think about it.

Back when Ciconia was coming out, I saw some people on 2ch joking that it's Ryukishi's "posthumous work", so I think the general meme in Japan is that Higurashi is his only good work.

Personally, I think that from a more western perspective Japanese VN fans just have terrible taste. They want to consume moeges and nakiges without having to think about things. I'm not trying to attack them by saying this, as it's imo just a natural result of VNs being more popular there. Western Hollywood fans also tend to prefer mindless consumption, after all, it's just that the sorts of people who read VNs outside of Japan tend to be more contrarian and prefer more thoughtful stuff. Which is why Japanese and Western fans have completely divergent tastes.

There are definitely 07th Expansion fans in Japan, though. I think the online "hate" is just memeing. But Ryukishi definitely gets a lot of his support from his global fan base, which is one reason he wanted Ciconia to have an international setting.

Umineko was super popular there until EP5, though. It was when EP6 came out, and a good portion of the fanbase (both Japanese and Western) started criticising the direction in which the story had headed that R07 started losing plenty of popularity in Japan. It didn't help that R07 didn't take the high route and started criticising his fans in his own works, and that EP7 and EP8 did very little to change things.

Yeah, that's the plothole, if Ange got sick on October 4, there is no way Yasu would have known. You should definitely check out the Episode 8 manga, some of the added scenes are pretty neat, but I wish he didn't go so hard in revealing so much.
