Has anyone tried getting Tsukihime to work well on Linux with Proton? It works fine in normal WINE but stutters really hard in Proton and has some weird mouse bug. Proton is the only way to play it with integer scaling, though.

Movies are the way to go atm, if the novels were licensed then it might be worth the read, because the fan-translation is pretty hit and miss.
If you're interested in the novels the first chapter got an official translation in an anthology called Faust 1 by Del Rey.

The Far Side routes especially expand on their involved characters and develop them in a way you won't see in Arcueid or Ciel's routes. Actually in terms of just prose, Nasu is much, much better these days. He has improved the technical side of his writing quite a bit. Tsukihime and especially Kagetsu Tohya are written so terribly that it's embarrassing. Fate is pretty bad too, but not as bad.

I'd disagree with Tsukihime and Kagetsu Tooya being terribly written, but I found them to be technically worse than Kara no Kyoukai which makes me think their quality (which is still better than plenty of commercial games) has more to do with Nasu needing to adapt to a different medium than anything else. He said in an interview he started writing Tsukihime as if he was writing a novel before soon realising that wasn't going to work.
I've only read the Koudansha editions of KnK though, which supposedly have some changes from the original doujin novels, but I can't imagine they're dramatically different.

I'd also agree with that assessment. I know sometimes KnK gets some flak for being "pretentious" or "artsy", but I really loved the way it was written. Shiki's introspection is extremely engrossing and immersive.

A huge chunk is SoL involving you interacting with the babylonian citizens, which provides context on what Gil is like as a ruler and also show the attitude of the citizens. Seeing the citizens remaining gutsy and maintaining a normal life while being attacked daily by a bunch of monsters serves to illustrate why Gil is fiercely proud of his people. This parallels his depiction in FSN/FZ where he throws a fit and call the modern world shit.

How's this any different or worse than in FSN where you have huge chunks of SoL to establish that dynamics between Shirou and co. Like how in HF all those cooking stuff people love to meme about are actually there to illustrate that sense of normal household life that Sakura provide to Shirou.

I still remember that Mahoyo review where it's described as a 60 years old woman (aka the writing and prose are bad) with an absolutely beautiful make-up (aka the visual and music aspects). Nasu's writing back then is mostly said to be that of an elementary student, IIRC he has never been nominated or gotten any awards eventhough he's been writing for a long time even. Still, the main charm of his works are the characters/the relationship between them and the worldbuilding (i think it's even called 'unique' in JP) rather than the prose and writing.

Maybe it's just me, but TnS was in 2010 and i wouldn't call it an "early" work. I do like it a lot yeah, i tends to like Nasu's short stories in general though he rarely does so. Clocktower 2015 is my favorite as well, so is Room of the April's Witch (since this is about short story/oneshot) but this one was written by Meteo.
